1.
Please dig them up and burn them! Then we can all have jacket potatoes
Save that kind of talk for FarmChat.co.uk.
 2.
Most words have different meaning to most people. I hate potatoes but that doesn't mean I want to dig them all up and burn them. Btw in nearly all your replies you where a bit on the rude side yourself dude " have a word with yourself " and " read this " Obviously it means more to you but that's hardly his fault. D
I did find it ironic...
 3.
In answer to the OP's question... I think we gig specifically to spread love and happiness throughout the world, la la la, la la. *skips away gaily*
4.
and read this while you're at it....
Look dude, maybe you are just having one of those days, or maybe this is how you usually get on, i don't know, but i know there was no trouble with me saying i hate an analogy and find it useless until you decided to get particularly upset on somebody else's behalf. I wasn't being abrasive, or abusive, and it's a very rare occasion on here when i am (ask anyone).
Milton, you totally miss my point...... I took exception to the abrasive manner with which you dismissed White Cloud - i don't agree with the analogy myself either, but then I'd be polite enough to discuss my different opinion without calling anyone's opinion useless.... It seems I'm flogging a dead horse trying to get you to show a bit of consideration to others - obviously you don't get out much.
Excuse me? I didn't dismiss his opinion AT ALL! I agreed with it! I dismissed the analogy, which has come up in other threads and i have given it the same regard. No obviously i don't get out much, because if you knew me at all, you would know i can't very well get out much. Thank you, goodbye.
 5.
You must have missed the post describing someone's opinion as useless and that he hated it enough to emphasize the word in capitals....
An analogy isn't an opinion. Hating an analogy which isn't relevant to this discussion won't bring about the end of the world. And i think you'll find i didn't disagree at all with the point being made, but even if i had, what's the problem? It's a forum after all, that's what happens. That's the point.
 6.
And that warrants HATE? Have a word with yourself!
I hate the analogy, so what?
Its ok dude, not worth getting excited about. Its easy for individuals to be abrasive, rude and obnoxious over a keyboard online. Its an unfortunate downside of internet communications between strangers who will never meet face to face. Apologies to any other members who found my use of analogies useless and hateful lol!
What's the issue? I hate the use of the analogy, i don't find it hateful, and i don't hate anybody for using it. Seriously, i need a word with myself? Practice what you preach, guys.
 7.
Just wondering why so vehemently negative - I found them uselessly hateful tbh.... (no smilie)
Because they are useless analogies that people seem to chuck up no matter what is being discussed. No smilie.
 8.
"Useless" and "Hate" ...two extremely negative words, but I am glad you agree with the overall point. From a professional point of view the guitar teacher that you know has a very sensible relationship with the venues that he plays imho.
Yes, they are negative words, that's why i used them Yes, he does.
 9.
That's true. Being whipped with a knotted rope, for example.
Standing naked in the snow, i was thinking...
 10.
I gig because I love it. That fact that I'll get a few quid at the end of the night is icing on the cake. We play mostly local-ish pubs & clubs, so travelling expense isn't really an issue. As for strings, maintenance, etc, I'd be paying for that anyway as I play at home at least a couple of hours every day. The buzz I get from playing live is like nothing else. It's a drug, and the most fun you can have with your clothes on. Probably.
There's a lot of things you can do with your clothes off that aren't any fun too
 11.
Isn't that how everyone does it? Pay-per-dump, I mean. As for the question of up-front payment on arrival ... an interesting one to debate.
Haha Well, he would normally set up, then ask, just so they had some security and could trust to pay him and still get what they paid for. I think it's reasonable, and he swears by it. He wouldn't do a gig unless he got paid before.
 12.
Dead right. Always agree the fee. No payment = no play.... its as simple as that. agreeing to take a percentage on the door is a nonsense. Would you pay a plumber based upon the amount of times the toilet he fitted is flushed? Would you pay a joiner based upon the amount of times the door he hung was opened? We all love playing, its a passion, but do not let club/bar owners take the piss.
Useless analogies that i HATE being used, but i agree with the overall point. A guitar teacher i know, who has a LOT of gigging experience said that no matter what kind of gig he was playing, wedding, pub, whatever, he ALWAYS asked to be paid when he was setting up for the night. If he didn't get paid, he didn't play. That way he avoided getting done out of money.
 13.
You made lots of assumptions and got nothing. What did you expect? Wise up. Get organised. You have to arrange and agree everything before you put the gig in the diary.
DING DING DING! We have a winner!
 14. If you're in a covers band as a way of earning money, you need to be paid, no matter how much you love it. I'm sure plenty of people love their day-job, but wouldn't dream of doing it for nothing! An acquaintance of mine got a gig in a local pub before christmas. He's only 16 and trying to get his foot in the door. He got this gig, and was told that he would get free drinks on the night (this kid doesn't look or act 16, let alone 18, but that's another discussion) and that it would lead to more gigs. I advised him against in, because i don't think any landlord who thought you were worth paying for a gig would try and get your first gig for nothing. He did the gig, and never got another one. I've never played in a covers band, or done gigs in a pub, but i know plenty of people who have, and it's always the same story. Your first gig is never free, that's it! Free gigs are for the people who put plenty of work your way and can be trusted.
 15.
I think that's very funny. It would be even funnier if you let them listen to a HUGE band like Led Zep or The Beatles on your ipod and they thought it was you.
Yeah, they had no idea! It's not like Rage are an uncommon band. Killing in the name was a big hit, so i can't say there's much excuse for them not realising
 16.
They all know I play (its in my cv) My boss plays piano to her rabbits just for pleasure when she's drinking wine of a night time. She also can't comprehend how I can play an intrument & yet not read sheet music. Yesterday we were so quiet in the shop she set about teaching me "all cows eat grass." It will come in handy one day.
Classically trained no doubt. That's how she can't comprehend it.
 17.
I currently manage a small music shop here in Birmingham, and while we're quite new, we're also very hopeful for the future. We try our best to be as honest and as useful as possible to potential customers and match all our prices online. And when people see the prices of our items, they're often shocked to see a small local shop matching online prices. But I'm curious as to what brings you to your favourite music shops on a regular basis for things like strings, cases etc. For me, it's a combination of a few things. I never used to travel to local shops because they never had the gear I wanted ('high-end' items like good cases/straps that sort of thing) or even do things for good prices (it was always cheaper to buy online). And don't worry, this isn't market research by any means! I'm just curious as to hear if I'm the only one who primarily has bought online in the past as it's hard for a lot of people around my age (twenties) to get out of the stigma of "everything is cheaper online"
I don't think you can ever, EVER underestimate making a connection with your customers, and staying open minded. Keep that connection open and listen to what they want. Know your market. I thought my local was mad for getting in a load (talking 20+) pink ukuleles, but they all sold in a few weeks. Why? The man just knows his market, and what will sell. I like the shop, for a couple of reasons. The guy that owns it is a nice guy. I like him, and we have becomes friends since he opened the shop. He's still quite young (20's) so he knows what's cool, and his shop is a "Cool" place to buy your music gear from. He knows why people buy their gear online, and would price match quite a lot of things if you ask him to. And he's running an improv workshop that i'm going to. It's pretty cool.
 18. What's wrong with paper? If it falls off the stand, the worst that will happen is you f*** up, if an iPad falls off, you f*** up AND you've broken a £300 piece of kit! And possibly lost all your notes for the rest of the set.
 19. If the .105 set now has a .107 gauge E string, shouldn't it be called a .107 set now?
 20. My friend is starting an online string shop. Although it won't be up for a little while. Although he would likely order in custom strings if you put in an order with him.
 21.
I love the piping too. Round the lapels, I mean, not that godawful droning instrument.
I can tell this pint will lead to many, many more.
 22.
Only if it's dyed Emerald Green and you wear the comedy hat. Skank and Milty's Big Night Out
Good thing it's the only colour suit and hat i own then, isn't it?
 23.
Thank you, Comrade Sister. BC-er's from The Emerald Isle fall under categories 5-9, being no different from any other BC-er (apart from possessing charming manners, twinkly smile, inexhaustible supply of crack, etc). .
ah cheers for that one, Mr.Delvar. Sure come on over, meet the wife, and then we'll go out for a pint, eh?
 24. Something designed to beat mediocrity to death. And a high horse.
 25.
I saw that and the thread on here, sort of enjoyed them both. Think he's brought everything he gets on himself to be honest.
Without a doubt he has.
