1. Well my current interface was only £45, and you'd be hard pushed to find something cheaper than that. If i was to get a Behringer Xenyx with 4 faders (which would be 8 channels, wouldn't it?) that would be the best part of £100. I'm going to start investing in stuff. Might start off with the DI and mics. Then get the interface and everything else i need after.
  2.
also remember, you are working within constraints, so the recordings may not sound like the most polished articles in the world, but don't let it get you down, take your time and the results will come
Oh, i'm not looking for a highly polished article. I'm not trying to get it on Radio 1. I already have an interface. It only has 1 XLR input though. I was thinking of getting a little Behringer xenyx mixer. They are a USB mixer.
  3.
Good, mic the cab. Bad dont DI from the head, it is not adding anything useful where you need that DI signal to be helping your bass sound that you cant do far better at mix down with decent VSTs - you do have a computer capable of running some decent softweare and reasonable VSTs at this point dont you?
I have Logic Pro 9. Not sure what VST's are though.
A good DI is over £100 too. Yes there are cheaper ones, but you already said you dont want this to sound cheap. Get a good workhorse DI, not some crappy Behringer rubbish that does all sorts of unnecessary stuff (ooh look its got eq and drive - crap unneccessary waste of money - ignore it at the price range you can entertain, yes I include all the bass preamp floor boxes with a DI thrown in to this comment, they are gash for what you are doing, do not let the bells and whistles seduce you).
Ok, what do you recommend? My teacher uses an EBS DI/preamp. It's rockin'!
OK, CM3 is king for that at the price, a Little Blondie is more natural close miced (no proximity effect being omni) but your room wil put the kybosh on the recording of an acoustic guitar with an omni (why? source is low level, omni picks up the room as much as the source, by definition, crap room = crap result). CM3 is about £140 on its own, so maybe the t.bone stereo set will help at a much lower budget. Condensors do acoustic guitars far better than dynamics as a rule. Although a dymanic on the body and a condensor further up toward the neck can sound ace on acoustic guitar. Position is ultra critical for acoustic guitar, be ready to spend an afternoon just getting the mics in the right place. Seriously...
Duly noted.
  4.
You could consider installing one - I added a B-Band system to my acoustic and the results are excellent (much better, and more convenient/consistent than a cheap mic in a bad room IMO, I have several condenser mics I could use but almost always just DI the b-band) http://www.b-band.com/
Cheers.
ok lets keep it simple you say an ep, what are the songs to consist of? we can throw loads and loads of ideas around, but to know what you need, you need to know yourself what you are planning on. i assume acoustic guitar, bass and vocal at this stage?
Yup, just bass and guitar at this stage. Not even sure about vocals yet. Some songs might be recorded on electric guitar, but i'll likely use the same technique as i do for recording bass as i will for electric, provided i can get a lend of a decent amp.
  5. My guitar has no pickup or preamp system. I didn't buy one with a preamp because you get less guitar for the money.
  6.
I hate to be negative, but your first attempts won't be pro-studio release quality (actually IME they probably never will be ), and you definitely won't get anywhere close with one mic and a £100-£150 budget.
It's an EP. I've done a couple of other recordings before, but never using a mc.
  7. Em, i had kind of already thrown out the room mic and second head ideas. My cab is posted at the back though, so to get any ported sound at all, would i not need to either have a mic at the back, or very far in front? I was thinking of more going down the route of micing the cone and also taking a DI from the head (saves me needing to get a DI box) and then blending them in the mix. I need to learn how to match the phasing though. I know that's important, but i don't know how to. I'll read up on that. Another thing i need to record is my acoustic guitar. I would need a condenser mic for that, won't i? (as well as a decent room to record it in).
  8.
it will have an effect, maybe not a massive amount, but it will do. you have also said that you're room isn't carpeted? that two will have a knock on effect. basically you'll have reflection city going on, unless you can get a better room. but as said before, keep it simple, DI the bass. there are plenty of bits of software which can allow you to add cab and speaker sound in using impulses. they are by no means the perfect article, but if you can get good ones they do add a nice colour to the tone.
I am quite a perfectionist is the problem. I'm kind of regarding this as a high priority now, and i want to do it right. The final recordings aren't going to be for putting on soundcloud, or the composition competition, but to be given to and sold to people to listen to. Whether people want to buy or listen is another thread.

    Hello

Hello! Why did the lobster blush? Because the seaweed. Welcome!
  10. I might even be able to get a decent room to record in.
  11. But if i was just to mic the cab up, then room treatment wouldn't matter too much, would it? I mean, it wouldn't pick up that much of the room sound if i used a cardioid mic surely? Maybe i'm entirely wrong.
Large diaphragm condenser mics are by their nature coloured. Cheap ones in a less good way. Small diaphragm condensers are less coloured. Stick to a cheap SDC for most sources. Use the LDC for the couple of headline instruments , ie lead vocal and one other - the final result will benefit from this approach. If you colour everything the same you may as well be in monochrome....
Well, that's pretty much why i like using my bass heads, they colour the tone in a good way, and make it nice and warm.
  12.
If you want to sound good keep it simple. You don't have the room treqtment for clever mixing nor tje monitoring solution nor the seperation. I've tracked hundreds of songs. If you wqmt a gteat sounding guerrilla recording then you have to keep the tracking very sttaight forward.
Erm, were you at the pub when you wrote this by any chance?
  13. Also, we just got a new bathroom in. It's bigger, and everything is tiled
  14.
i'm not meaning to sound argumentative, but if you want to record an ep you have to see the fun in it, over complicating will strip the fun out sometimes keeping it simple is the best option
Over-complicating stuff is my fun.
  15.
this. unless you are recording a band, you need no more than 2 inputs. i record everything at home, bass, vocals, etc and only use my 2 input interface, i use a bigger one for live recording, but if you are doing some bass stuff at home, just di the bass then get some free cab emulators. if you are only trying to learn, don't over complicate it, you can easily pick up a line 6 device for about 60 quid, and it will come with a free version of podfarm usually which will let you come up with amp and cab sounds on the pc. if you over complicate it at this stage, you'll spend more time fighting with it than recording with it.
I'm not just doing it to learn though, i'm doing it to record an EP too. Ok, maybe i'll ditch the 2 amp idea.
  16. I need to learn these things anyway.

  18. Ok, not had a chance to read all the response yet, but i have read some of them, and thanks for the suggestions! I might well get a set of those silver bullets! I was talking to a friend of mine who does a fair bit of recording, and he said the best sound he ever got from a bass was with an SM57 right up to the cone, and an AKG C414 about a foot in front, and slightly off centre, then mixed with a bit of DI. Now- An AKG is massively expensive, so i'll have to substitute it for something else, naturally. The SM57 seems like a good idea, because it will capture the high end of the cab (maybe place if vaguely near the tweeter?). and he said the AKG picked up the punch and boom of the cab, and the DI filled out everything in between. Fair enough. I have 1 bass head, a combo (which i will put a link to my video of below) and a 15" Sub, which would be used with the rack head. If possible, i would like to DI the rack head, and also mic the sub, along with DI'ing and micing the combo. What's the best way to split my signal to the 2 heads? Just use one of those cheap 2 way splitters? Also, i need to upgrade all my recording gear. At the moment, i just have a little sound card that has one XLR input. If i'm recording the way i want to, i'll need 5 or 6, but still on a budget. I reckon a Behringer Xenyx is a good budget option. It's a USB mixer, and it will allow me to control the volumes more easily (in my last recording, the cab was very quiet, because i had to keep the volume very low or it was too loud for my laptop to record using the DI, which i thought was odd.). Anyway, it needs to be good. Omni's aren't really a good option for me, because i'll be recording this in my room pretty much, which doesn't even have carpet at the minute. The cabs are pointed straight at a wardrobe, and a wall, so lots of parallel surfaces to reflect off. I need to do this well, because i hope to make an EP from it.
  19.
Just the way I like it Now what the hell was this thread about again?
Who do you love more, your bass or your wife, and if your habits show that you have the traits of somebody who would cheat on on their partner.
  20.
That my friend, was Goat Bollocks. It sounds like what it is
And it's named like what it sounds like, so isn't everything wrapped up in a neat little bow here?
  21.
Much worse! https://soundcloud.c...age-goat-cheese (Don't play bass drunk, boys and girls )
What. Was. That?
  22. Although, looking at it, it does look kind of like the man who was teaching me theory during the summer. Does it say where he is from?
  23.
Probably for the best. It's awful
Yeah, but then, i am just listening to "Broken Wings" by Mister Mister. Before that was Rock me Amadeus. Nothing more awful than the 80's i reckon What did you all do? sit around the radio laughing? (until Stairway came on of course).
  24.
You are a very bad boy. Take 100 lines..... no wait, stop I didn't mean that
too late
  25.
That's a pretty good start I've also contributed to a project called Goat Bollocks, I don't suppose there's a link there too??
mmm, nope? Don't think so.
