I can't get that download to work in Logic. When you say it shouldn't go above 0db, i've used a plugin that was in Logic. It can't limit what volume it goes to, but it does show that the track doesn't go above 0db when set to RMS. It does peak above it when set to peak though. Is that good enough for you?

Ladies moaning about husband's 'excessive' guitar practice...
That's not mad, it's just that the cat matters to her more
Yes, and that's mad. I needed food too. She later shouted at me when she asked me to help her find her phone, and I found it... in her bag. It was ringing ffs, it's hardly like I just went hunting through her bag. In any case, why wasn't that the first place she looked for her phone? Isn't that where most woman keep them? Honestly, mad! One day, she decided she didn't like mushrooms because they are a fungus. -
I love the way a guy steps in and suggests they talk and compromise. Immediatiately a woman jumps in and shoots him down... Maybe he's given up 'compromising' and decided that the compromise was all one way. Maybe he's always been selfish but if that's the case, why did she marry him? They're all mad. We're all doomed.
I thought all women were mad all the time? Is that not a pretty commonly held belief? Maybe not all the time. I asked my sister to go to the shop for me the other day, and she refused, then half an hour later went to the shop because she realised there was no cat food for the cat... -
I would call this a 'senior moment'. What's your explanation, please..? Should we be worried..?
I should be worried, i've been calling every month March for the last month! I even put it in one of my YouTube videos last month! GAH!

I've taken loads of tracks out. Too much going on, and too much for my mind to cope with Hopefully it gives the entire track more openness, which Is what I like. It made it easier to mix everything too I think. All the stringed instruments aren't fighting for audibility, so I think it has made the track better in general. But we'll see on 15th march how it compares

Just finishing mine off. Don't expect anything great, it's my first time mixing anything Who do I send the link to?
Thanks Milty, I'm super-flattered that you think that I should say that I also put in lots of hard graft... albeit enjoyable hard graft! I read lots about music production; I enjoy geeking out and learning how to use tech in new ways; I do lots of critical listening to different genres; and I put in plenty of hours. Typically 2-3 days minimum per track, from start to finish, scattered here and there during late evenings, early mornings and weekends throughout each month (snatching opportunities where I can around family stuff!). So while I certainly strike upon ideas quickly and creatively, the task of turning them into full compositions is equally a technical and time-consuming one. At least for me it is. But anyway, cheers for the kind words mate! I've had my confidence massively boosted since I joined Basschat a few years ago. Can't thank y'all enough for that.
Yes, but all that time spent recording the song is only for the sake of letting the likes of me, who doesn't live down the road, hear it. It doesn't have much to do with your creative ability solely as a musician I reckon. I'm off now to see if the comp comp photo inspires me in any way
It's an odd thing for me. And it's difficult to explain without sounding like a complete tw@t or a madman, but here goes... I have music running in my head almost constantly. Like tinnitus. It's always there - it just gets louder if I stop and think about it. I did some Googling into it once, but stopped when I read that it can be linked to the same area(s) of the brain that are responsible for schizophrenia: voices in ones head (not a split personality, as it's often confused). There are times when I literally have to scribble something down, or hum a ditty into my phone just to 'exorcise' myself of it. Which all probably sounds a bit crazy, but that's how it goes for me. The upside is that I've never (yet) suffered from a creative block. Quite the opposite - I get frustrated by not having enough time to bring each idea to fruition. So for me it's less of a creative process and more a musical illness! Though not one I necessarily 'suffer' from
Without reading your post, I pretty much said the same thing in my first reply You're quite lucky that you come up with so many good ideas, and it actually amazes me that you aren't a professional musician. How many times have you won the comp comp now? I think of so many ideas, but like Dave, throw most of them out as rubbish. The ones that I think are good, I'll take a quick video. If I still like it, i'll do a very rough recording, almost like a pre-demo kind of thing, just to hear it. Nothing fancy, normally just the little mic on my laptop into garageband (you can guess the quality). Now that i'm off my head on codeine, maybe i'll come up with better ideas
How does your's work?, Do you get a sudden burst when writing songs? Does it take time?
I find it easier when i'm already warm up and ready, if you know what I mean? Sometimes, that could take 20 minutes, but it could take a few hours, which I rarely spend in one sitting. If i'm playing with other people, it's a lot easier. I find it difficult to bring something in to a jam that's already happening, especially as the bassist, but that's probably my inexperience. The best I can usually do is work in a pentatonic scale. But this is all just filler to my response really. I'm sure most of us get something stuck in our heads. That happens to me. It normally happens when i'm doing something else. Creating music to me is like a watched kettle, it never boils. You have to walk away from it and forget about it to come up with the good stuff (well, I do anyway). As a bassist, i'm really crap at writing lines, but as a rhythm guitarist, I think i'm actually quite good at making up chord progressions, and the song that I am working on at the minute is quite a hook, and i've only written the lyrics and chord progression of the chorus! It's now trying to make the rest of the song live up to that standard. It's a real pain in the arse, but nobody ever said I wasn't a determined man
A couple of hundred to mix and master one song would be more accurate. Still think someone else should do your mixes?
Eh... no You can tell me if my mix is any good for the comp, then I'll see if it's worth me doing it or not
I really don't know. Haven't really played much recently as it's all seemed a bit pointless. Oddly, the time I'd have spent doing that hasn't been reinvested, and I've completely stopped watching TV, using the PlayStation, reading, listening to music. Nothing is doing it for me right now, so I seem to be sleeping quite a lot instead.
You might be depressed.
word of advice, learn to mix as well as record. i know you don't plan to mix your own stuff, but unless you know how to mix, you won't learn how important it is to get things right when recording. mixing stuff you haven't recorded can be a real mission, especially if it isn't recorded properly. i know its not your goal, but recording and mixing go hand in hand....if you wan't a good mix back, you need to understand the process to ensure what you put into the system is the best it can be... its not as simple as just whacking a di and mic on a rig and letting someone else sort it out. simple terms if you know what the mixer is going to struggle with and eliminate it at source, you will save their time and your money
Noted
-
yeah man do it, its about making the mix sound the best it can, and if they means removing parts for the good of the track then do it
I think I just like empty space in tracks. I'm a bit of a minimalist, and country... isn't.
Nice one Milty, quick work! JUST DON'T SHARE YOUR MIX IN THIS THREAD OR YOU'LL BE BANNED FROM THE COMPETITION!! [< said in a kind of, "Noooo, not the green wire!" type slow-motion urgency] Seriously though, don't. It's one of the rules of the competition laid down by Grand Vizier 51m0n to ensure a blind voting process at the end of it (and it's worth it). Finished mixes should be uploaded somewhere 'secret' and a link PM'd to Si once you're happy with your final mix. You can of course ask for hints and tips and discuss your mix however you like - just words though, no sounds. "Be pure! Be vigilant! Behave!"
Ha, don't worry, I did read the first post
thing is, it won't sound perfect first off. don't let it get you down, but take in the advice from others on here, and listen to what others have done, and it really will aid your development
Of course. I think the mix I have sounds ok, but there's too much going on, so I'm going to do a bit of a cull.
i think that is part of the mix challenge. if you feel it would sound better go for it
Ah, good stuff! I'm just about to upload a mix, and unmixed version, but I doubt i'm finished now, given this new info

Quick question - Can we mute certain instruments at certain points in the song or do we have to use the full recordings?
. . . . and perfect example of why variety is the spice of life.
And why making a video as well as a song isn't a waste of a day
Okay, okay; I can take it no longer! My mix is in for this month, and If I never hear this song again it will be too soon! I have to say the stems were a bit odd this month; to say they had used some fancy mic's they seem to have botched several of the drum tracks to my ear. Anyone else having problems making the cymbals sound natural? And the toms seem a bit dodgy too. A lot of nice sounding 'plinky-plonky' things though, and I really liked the fiddle. Well, who doesn't like a fiddle...? Edit Sorry Twigman, just realised you said all these things too!
I managed to get a good sound from the drums I think (maybe that's just my inexperience talking). The cymbals just don't sound like nice cymbals at all to me. Can you make sh*t cymbals sound like good cymbals? If it's possible, it's likely beyond my level of expertise
-
I'm just doing the drum tracks now, but i'm quite enjoying this. My mix might show something else, but I do have practically all the time that I want to work on it (until May 15th at least). I'm excited
I just watched it on 4od. No real surprises & I think once Royal Mail are finally sold off we'll have a lot more problems with mail delivery to look forward to. Better the devil you know?
I've never had much problem with Royal Nail or Parcel Force. In fact, the most problem i've had is their parcel pricing system and how nobody can actually work it, but I hardly use it at all. If i'm sending a parcel, I normally get Parcel Force to collect.
search google and youtube, loads of tutorials for various DAW's around its always the same, i was rubbish at getting round cubase for a couple of years, its only the last 2 years ive really got to grips with DAW's and can work through them quickly. Reaper is fast become my DAW of choice tho
Yeah, i'm checking out YouTube for tutorials currently. Not much luck, suppose i'll be expected to actually read something off Google now

It doesn't bode well for me that I can't even get the files to open in Logic, does it?
