  1. Thanks. It's quite rewarding trying to figure out proper parts. I usually just invent my own based on what I think is being played and then going off on my own flight of fancy.
  2. how do you loop and slow down sections in audacity? I have no idea how this program works and am completely confused
  3. I have a fretboard that's maple or rosewood (or maybe both, i'm not entirely sure). It doesn't appear to be finished or coated in anything. What household products can be used to clean it (as opposed to buying expensive guitar polishing gear)
  4. It's just not a favourite of mine. I think the production is poor compard to what came before. THe songs aren't bad, but they've been played to death and there are better. YYZ is definitely overrated though. The live versions of Witch Hunt are much better. Permanent Waves is a more interesting album IMO
  5. Permanent waves seems to straddle the earlier long song stuff like Hemisphers or 2112 and the stuff immediately after which was a bit more radio friendly. Most cite Moving Pictures, which came after, as their best, but I thought it was overrated. Some classic tunes on there (Tom Sawyer, Limelight, YYZ - instrumental).
  6. Lot's of people I imagine, noen of them are me though I think it may be that the strings are naturally gunky and its taking the mositure of my fingers
  7. That sounds oddly specific But they must be, i've been using them for months!
  8. Well neil's retired now, to raise his kid, so he can enjoy his life. Good luck to him.
  9. I'm not sure how Tim's behaviour is relevant. Neil just doesn't come across well at all, by his own words it seems. I'm sure he has many friends and good luck to him, he was an exceptional drummer. I can understand finding fame difficult, but he just comes across badly. Like the old adage: never meet your heroes. I enjoy their music, but that's as far as it goes.
  10. Illuminations by Santana and Alice Coltrane. Beautiful work.
  11. Have you read the reviews for his written accounts o flife on the road where he seems to hate it. The anecdoate where he encountered a fan who had busted his way on to his tour bus. Not a smart move, but the overreaction is crazy. Of course I don't know him personally, I imagine most of us don't.
  12. Is that true? That was certainly the case in the eighties. Hold Your Fire particularly is promarily Geddy compositions.
  13. Coudln't think where else to put this as it's quite the weird question: anyone else ever find that, when they pluck, their fingers get caught on the string? As if the string was really dry and hard to play? Maybe I need to change my strings. Or get new fingers (they aren't sticky or covered in dirt or whatever)
  14. Wouldn't wish that on anyone, but from what i've read the guy has a terrible personality. Of course the correct answer to the orignal question is Permanent Waves. However Prest is desperately underrated IMO. Very quirky little album. I think they lost it a bit in their later years. Clockwork Angels is pretty decent but I don't listen to it that much, Vapour Trails has a couple of decent tracks (Earthshine is outstanding) and Snakes and Arrows is pretty dire IMO. Shame Geddy isn't playing so much, but he seems to have gotten better as a player and worse as a singer. BY the end his voice was pretty shot
  15. So this is what i've been doing, but it's pretty involved. Is it too in depth (i asked this on talkbass)? Take a major 7th arpegio in F. Start 1f E string I try to go two octaves and come back through the inversions. Thus: G----------------2--5--9---10-9------------------------------------------9--10--14------ D---------2--3--------------------10-8-------------------------------10------------- A-------3---------------------------------8--7------------7--8--12------------------ E-1--5------------------------------------------8--5---8-------------------------- There is one final part, but I couldn't fit it in this diagram - the final inversion and then back all the way to 1f E string. Not only that, but when i intend to start the exercise afresh with each subsequent inversion. This example is the root inversion (F, A, C, E), it comes down with the first inversion and so on. If that's clear
  16. Should you play through more than one octave?
  17. When I play an argpeggio, say Cmaj7, should i play it all the way up the neck? Each inversion? Or is there a more efficient method?
  18. anyone? I'm sure not the only one practicing them
  19. Always enjoyed bootsy when he works with others. I really like Perfect Machine by Herbie Hancock
  20. I used to have that album, it's really good with an interesting take on Naima by John someone or other
  21. Is that any good? I'm hot and cold on Claypool tbh. He's a great bass player but he's weak as a composer and singer. Great ideas but he needs the right band.
  22. Been listening to Illuminations by Alice Coltrane and Carlos Santana. Fantastic stuff. Must acquire this record.
  23. Thanks for the replies but I'm still not really clear as to why it's one not the other.
  24. That's the problem, I don't understand what that context could be. THanks anyway
