1. Thanks, I assumed that. Coudln't see what else they awere for (Ultra shred mode perhaps :D)
2. I have a few methods i've designed for myself. But i'm curious if there are any established methods for practicing them?
3. they don't seem like flats, but then I've never seen nor played with them. Perhaps they are just dry from sitting in the warehouse and being packaged in that stuff that prevents moisture. It isn't a huge issue, as sooner or later they'll get changed. I'm more concerned with the odd fret buzz. Also, I've been adjusting intonation, but getting the D right is a bit of a challenge. The bass sounds fine when I play it, for instance if I fret the 15th fret on the E and compare it to the open G it sounds fine. I don't want to just move the saddle endlessly. that seems unwise.
4. Thanks! It's like mission control. How do you know whether it's in active or passive?
5. Hi, I just picked up the aforementioned bass. Obviously out of the factory it's not 100% setup. Seems very playable just a couple of probably minor things I could manage myself, but wouldn't mind some advice. Intonation. Is pretty good actually, the G and D are the slightest touch out. I can probably fix that myself, assuming it just needs to settle down somewhat. Action. It feels pretty good, although I suspect the string guage is a bit heavier than Id like (I've absolutely no idea what it is or what make they are), they still feel a bit new and need some warming up to flow (if that makes sense). Buzz/truss rod: i do that thing where you fret at the first and then hold down the highest fret (nearest the bridge) on the low string to see how mch room between string and neck and it doesn't look abnormally large or small, however there is some noise on the low E, particularly playing the A (5th fret) and Bb (6th fret) and the 12 fret (the octave). I don't know if this is just settling down or anything. I'm a bit paranoid because the last bass I bought (a Cort model) had massive problems around the 5th fret that made it unplayable and I had to get a refund. That wasn't a fun time, for all concerned. I doubt it's as bad here at all, but it is certainly noisy. There's a couple of spots elsewhere, nothing major. I mention this because I don't mind adjusting the truss rod if necessary, however i'd actually like to lower the action, not raise it. Just a touch. That won't address this. As I'm not a luthier I've no frame of reference for these things. Maybe it's just general newness. I'm otherwise perfectly happy so if anyone else has some advice I'd be very grateful. Finally, instructions. I've no idea what each of the pots and switches do. I'm not use to active basses and there are two battery compartments. I'm sure I coudl google something, but maybe one of you is familiar with this model. It didn't come with a label or user guide so all I can do is twiddle. (I only have a practice amp anyway).
6. True, but the version 2 does look nice. dark translucent aqua green with a light fingerboard. Very nice. But that's not what's important. What is important is whether I can shred like a demon on it
7. The only choice was white at the price offered. I think it was old stock (it was the link above) as the model has been replaced by a new version which has a better colour but for the sake fo fifty quid I'm happy with white. I'm not that fussed about these things and the new version is only different in that the neck is rounded at the edges. I'd rather pay the two hundred frankly. It was the model I linked above.
8. Low frequency friends i've taken the plunge on the Sire. I thank you for your responses, and if anyone was about to message me saying this bass is the worst thing on the planet...well too late I think as long as it allows me to express myself without falling apart or falling out of tune that's the main issue right now. Maybe when the Flower Kings need a new bassist (Jonas Reingod is my new bass hero) i'll be able to afford a superstar P Bass or Rickenbacker. Until then, thanks for the responses
9. I'm thinking i might take a punt on that sire, quality wise i think it might just edge out the sr300. sr500 would probably be better but i'd have to wait for something to turn up second hand for around £250
10. Nice instrument, but a little out of my price range at £300 (new), but that's not the model you said you were using?
11. I don't know how the v7 compares with the M2, but Anderton has this which seems good value, only the one finish. Not a huge issue realy but the colour is a bit dull However there's a new version of this for £50 more that has rolled edge fretboard. Don' tknow if that's the only change. Problem is I can't try it out because I don't live near a shop stocking them EDIT - it's also not quite 24 frets, given the length of the body, which I would like
12. I'm really not sure what to do tbh. I could afford this, but it's the whole 'for its price' thing. I'm not going to the studio tomorrow, nor am I off touring the world's stadiums, but I would like a quality instrument - not in relative terms. I'd like something I know isn't gong to have problems, evne if I'm just noodling along to some tunes at home. So it makes sense to try an find something second hand, assuming it's possible to find something local enough I can at least try out. There's also a Sire Marcus Miller M2 which i've seen (not at PMT) which looks nice at a similar point. Not sure how much value Marcus' name gives it in terms of quality, but it looks nice. Are there any good used outlets online?
13. Don't suppose you're based in North Somerset?
14. I enjoyed them both, but tbh it may well be better to see e if I can find something that is Bette. These are cheap instruments for a reasons and it would be nice to have something as good as I can afford. Problem is I can't really try out instruments such cond hand unless they are local. I'm not mobile as I don't drive and buying something on the strength of photos doesn't seem wise. But they were both playable. That's why I posted. I couldn't find a clear favourite. Overall the reviews and comments I've seen elsewhere favour the ibanez, but again perhaps it is cheap as the guy above said.
15. Like what? I've no idea what would be good and postage would suck. The ibanez is getting good reviews though, do you have any experience with either?
16. Hi friends, I am shopping for a new bass and found a couple i liked in PMT/Bristol. I couldn't decide between them: https://www.pmtonline.co.uk/jackson-js2-spectra-tobacco-burst-bass-guitar and https://www.pmtonline.co.uk/ibanez-sr300eb-bass-in-weathered-black I've heard good things about the latter from a few youtube clips. I had never heard of the former before I went in so I decided to ask the wise brains here if they had any experience with it or either. Both have their plus points and both were quite playable. The Ibanez has lots of tonal options (lots of pots and active eq iirc) while the Spectra just had 3 pots, but was just really playable if a little high action (that can possibly be lowered). The Spectra is cheaper though, if they were both the same price it'd likely be the Ibanez. One thing I've noticed is that in PMT none of their guitars ever seem to be set up. Both had some buzz here and there on the low E. I don't know if this is normal for instrument retail and it's probably something I culd fix with a little truss rod adjustment or basic setup. But they seemed reasonably well intonated as is so I'm not sure if that's a sign of a bad instrument or just conditoins right out of the factory. Maybe you know a better model at that price point? I didn't have time to play every instrument and, as can be seen from the PMT website they have a fair amount of stuff. I would shop around but Rikaxxe has nothing and the last time i went to Treblerock was, with the greatest of respect to Steve who was otherwise lovely, it was a bit of a mare: a Cort bass that was just a disaster because of massive fret buzz on the 5th 6th frets on the low E. Despite going back and forth to the shop (not easy) it coudln't be fixed and, reluctantly, I had to ask for a refudn (which was granted tbf). Shame as otherwise it was a lovely bass. Thanks
17. Thank you. I wil see if I can solder it
18. My bass is a bit rubbish, but that's ok. However the pickup seems to have died. When i plug into an amp nothing comes out. The pic enclosed is the wiring, it's not a great pick and I can't realy tell what the problem is. Looks like a loose wire maybe, but I have no idea how to fix this or even what I'm looking for. If anyone else does, i'd be grateful. Thanks. This things on its last legs anyways.
19.
Take it to the guy in Bristol, job done.
I haven't the money right now and the upper end of the prices he mentioned were just shy if a hundred quid
20.
Setting up a bass is generally quite easy as long as there are no pre-existing issues, manufactured or acquired. A setup by a good professional often beats what an average amateur can do, whilst a good amateur can often beat what an average professional can do. In short, there is absolutely no straight answer to your question, just opinion. I would suggest that if you are struggling to get the setup you want however, that you take it to a good professional to ensure that there are no issues.
. That doesn't appear to be the case and given the divergence of at times contradictory views, offered st times with prejudice, how do I know an expert from a person with an opinion?
21.
I'm not one for mob mentality, but put the shovel down... Is this the bit where the other thread went that well, you thought this would improve matters? I didn't get involved on the other thread as you were given sound advice overall but didn't seem to want it. If you're bending someone else's ear and they're telling you what you want to hear then go for it. Don't come back telling people who've offered you help that they've no clue what they're on about. If you have to ask advice, how do you know which party telling you what to is in the right? You could've been more gracious, that's all.
youre not getting it. I was perfectly gracious and yet every thread ends up being trolled. I was told to speak to a technician. I have done so. That is what he told me. In complete contradiction to the other advice given by the same people who told me to speak to a technician. You can't have it both ways, I have no idea who had been giving sounds advice because so far ask that I have been told had been in contradiction. This is what you are all missing. So who do I listen to, people on here and follow their free advice, or listen to the peeps they send me to talk to who will charge what could be a considerable sum of money.
22.
Yeah, yeah, and I've got a window-cleaner who'll tell you the same about windows. What do you know of our qualifications anyway? Maybe we're far more qualified than your guy? What are his qualifications? IBTL
no idea. I didn't ask. The respectful and friendly. Asking such in light of the depth of what he told me would have been rude. It was an informal chat, I didn't have my guitar with me.
