  1. I live in North Somerset The shops I've spoken to are quite up front about it taking weeks. So presumably they are that busy. Finding a local tech who could do it directly would be very good and probably quite instructional.
  2. Thanks, i've heard of shimming, but I'm not comfortable taking the neck off at this time. 1. Because I don't have the money for any more. I'm not a professional/gigging musician either, so any more would probably be an indulgence . 2. I don't know if the guy I mentioned (whoever he or she is) is any good. I would hope so. TBH that was my nearest shop but I have no idea if they have a good reputation for setups. They seem to have positive reviews on google, but I can't really find anything regarding techie stuff specifically. 3. of course
  3. I'd like the string action to be a bit lower without buzz, assuming that's possible
  4. Unfortunately the local techs are so buys (so I'm told) that it will take weeks and it'll be out of my possession then which means I'm not involved in the setup process. Yes I've commented elsewhere on following these videos. The problem is I can't get the action as low as I'd like. I don't know whether that's beause it's just too low in general, or its uneven frets (which I can't fix anyway), or something else entirely. Or just a question of getting used to a slightly higher action. It's no good endlessly tweaking truss rods and string action
  5. Most of the shops/places (ie those local) that I've enquired seem to want you to hand over your instrment for 2 weeks while the tech puts it in the queue and deals with it in turn. This doesn't seem desirable to me, not least of all because I only have one bass and I don't want to have nothing to play for two weeks (or more). More importantly, perhaps, since you the player isn't present, how can you be sure they'll set it up right? Is this practice the norm?
  6. I think he's working with investors now, since this took off. Acording to one newspapre article I read. I suspect this is their side of things. He's just a bass player/teacher, not an internet sales guru and this sort of thing is how those people behave. Not sure I'd agree the costs are hidden per se. But you do have to create an account first, which of course puts you on the mailing list so you end up getting all this stuff. A bit annoying. Once you do that you are invited to choose a plan. I don't like that, but it's how everybody operates unfortunately. They all rely on hoping you'll forget to cancel as its set up to charge by default. It's not deceptive, but it is shady
  7. I think he's a good teacher. He seems like a nice guy. I'm not criticising him at all and I'm happy his site is successful. It's just a shame to have to use such clickbaity means, but that's the way of the world. That's how Youtube works, The competitions are nice, I certainly would love to win a bass worth big bucks - who wouldn't? But again allowing multiple clicks is just a marketing strategy. It doesn't offend me though. I keep it in proportion. I do maintain a healthy scepticism of signing up with a card for a free trial. Yes it is standard practice but knowing I can't really afford to go beyond, do I really need to be signing over my details on another website? C'est la vie I guess
  8. I entered my email, but didn't continue as I'm not sure I want to put my credit card detail in just yet. That's fine. But my god, do they send you A TON of emails for this that and the other! Also a give away (for a bass no less, nice!) that allows you to click a link multiple times to get multiple entries? That seems pure clickbait. I'm not convinced by that sort of practice, though not surprised. A bit disappointing
  9. Scotts Bass Lessons that is. I can't really afford a regular subscription, so I'm wondering how much use just 14 days on the site would be? I presume you can't just go in and spend 14 days downloading everything to use at your leisure. I seaw the trailer for the Prog Metal stuff, which looks interesting. I do like some prog (you can leave the vomit vocals at home though :D)
  10. Hi, what would you recommend for shoring up right hand two finger plucking technique and is there a particular picking style you regard as optimal? Thanks for your time
  11. Many thanks to paddy above for the flats he sold me and delivered. These are a very different experience! Reminds of the time I tried one of those ashbory basses that were popular in th eninetites for about five minutes. Very weird
  12. Anyone familiar with http://westonmusicshop.co.uk? I emailed them about set up services, but they haven't responded yet. Any experiences?
  13. Thanks. How do I ensure that he (or whoever I go to) sets it up according to what I want? Most techs are busy so they aren't going to be able to fix it there and then "while U wait", so to speak. Are they? I know from the Edge Guitars website he's super busy. It's no good leaving the instrument with him for weeks on end. I need to make sure its setup for my needs
  14. Rikaxxe I hope is spelt correctly. The guy who runs it is very personable and friendly though I have no idea if he's any good or whether he knows what he's talking about.
  15. I wonder just how much of the difference we (if) perceive, when adjusting action, is actually imagined? Sometimes it feels as if the string is now uncomfortable lower/higher and yet the measured difference is negligible.
  16. That's what i've been doing, and I don't see any issues. FWIW. I suppose the edge of a credit card could have discrepancies that affect a reading, but everything seems fine.
  17. thanks, i might give them a try. that price is pretty good
  18. Is there anywhere that sells good quality but cheap flatwounds By cheap I mean preferably no more than £20 if possible. thanks
  19. Is there an easy way to measure whether the frets are uniform that can be done at home?
  20. Ignore the issue of frets for the sake of argument...
  21. my old bass has no relief at all and yet no buzz whatsoever. How is it that some basses can have buzz while others can exist with the straightest neck and no real clearance without buzzing
