Nice one Dave.......that is one sweet looking choice of woods sir...!!

LED tastic as well.....tip top !

  2.
Now when am I getting my name up on the "who's comming" bit? Matt's been nipping my head about it - I think he worried that I'm not going and he'll have to make his way down on his own. :)
Ahhh yes of course....

Email me your list of bits pal and I will update the tinterweb site tonight..... :)

  3.
maybe I'll come over on the Sunday for a nosey :)
Don't be shy come on down... :)

Rich, stop whinging you tart  ....there will be plenty of opportunity for playing all sorts of other tunes, you and I both know Shaun is spot on for jamming through stuff....

I am like you pal....we both loved just getting up and having a blast, and Shaun is looking forward to that side of things as well.

The real purpose of the list was to give a list of very straightforward tunes for people to be able to try out some gear without the pressure of getting up without knowing any songs. We did have a bigger list for shaun to look at but as time was marching on and Shaun is very busy with work I just got him to choose 10 or so songs that he is comfortable playing.....

  4. The set list has been sorted out now - its all obvious stuff from the typical rock sets

Some you guys will probably also play the devils 6 string instrument known as the guitar....and if you fancy playing some guitar on the day it could be good to add another song to the list for us to jam along with you....

PM or email me if you do and I could add the songs to the list...

  5. OOoooo.....really looking forward to seeing the pictures of this one Dave...!!

As Alan said, the custom headpiece that your bass started off, was a mammoth task to sort out. For something so small, its amazing the amount of time and work that is required to get this sorted out. The 3d modelling and cad-cam for the unit is one thing, but the actual machining, anodising process and all the other elements involved to create it was eye opening. Lifes a great learning curve as my old Dad always says...!

Its a real testament to Alan for going down this route as its a massive outlay for him for effectively a small batch of units, but we end up with a truly custom bass.

17months is anything but the normal build time, but I know it will be well worth it :)

Enjoy playing with yer nobs Dave !!

  6.
Superly amp 500watt version is basically 2x250watt amplifiers. Unbridgeable apparently.

    so I have two queries.

    1. can I run just one cab off this, or am I doomed to carry 2 cabs to every gig?
Ashdown answered this enquiry by saying its ok to run just one.
My amps not under warranty, so if it blows, they have no liability. I dont trust their answer!

2: I have a 15" driver rated at 8ohms. Would I be right in assuming this would be ok to run off one side of the Superfly amp while running a Superfly 2x8 4ohm on the other output as they are 2 independent amps?

all suggestion if you know what your on about would be most welcome

    thanks!!
You can run just one cab off one side (min 4ohm) with no problems (I have one I have for rehearsal/backup and do just this)

You can run your 1x15 off one channel, and 2x8 ohm off the other channel. Problem is you can't balance the levels, so one cab could sound louder than the other, but it will not cause any problems to the amp

You will get the best output with a pair of 4ohm cabs (one per channel). The original superfly consept was for a pair of 4ohm 2x10 cabs, and is probably the best way to get the most out of these amps. They are not the loudest things on the face of the planet by any stretch of the imagination.

For what its worth, I would strip all the outer cassing off the amp as it adds loads of weight and can cause problems with overheating.

  7.
give me a PM if your up for the weekend Paul. Im heading down so I could pop in and pick you up.
As others have all said....absolutely no snobbery at all at this bash....its just a great laugh with a good sprinkling of gear to try out....and a few scoops on the sat night :)

There is also one spare ticket just come up for the full weekend as one of the other guys has had to pull out due to a double booking.....so if Paul wants a place get in touch with Alan or myself

  8.
Now on a serious note, does your pal mark his gear incase its nicked :)
Not as daft a comment as you think....

As this year we are pretty sure we are going to have a few more people on the Sunday, we are making sure that we always have somebody on the door and its a strict ticket only entrance.....

As there is such a fantastic collection of bass gear, we dont want any tom dick n arry walking off the street, into a room and then swiftly out again with a guitar shaped plastic bag..... :)

  9.
Hopefully I will finally get to try a Rickenbacker and some markbass gear too.
Lots of Mark bass gear to try out Stephen, but so far No Ricks that I can see.

4000 cant make it up this year (Shame, as he is a massive Rick fan with plenty of knowledge on the beasts....) of course plenty of time for the list to grow for the sunday bash and if anybody has a Rick no doubt it will get pressed into service..... :)

I remember the very first Rick I picked up to play in a shop...I just new I was going to sound like Geddy Lee/Chris Squire......quickly found out I didn't :)

  10.
I think i can make the sunday, will be travelling all the way from
Lochmaben. No ryan air fligts either so will be driving. :)
Just had to google where Lochmaben was.....assumed it was a long drive from Moffat......

No excuse not to turn up..... :)

For any other interested punters we have only 1 double left, and 2 singles as of today (Sat 19th Nov)

As Alan said, its a ticket only affair so even if its just the Sunday you need to sort out a ticket before hand so we know who and what is coming along.

  11. Stunning work....I love Robbies fishtail basses....very, very nice indeed
Looks like the fun starts Sunday for me too.....
Fantastic Shaun...cant wait to follow this one as well pal !
And when it arrives I must get my grubby hands on it...!!!

  12.
I'll be up for a trip up to maffat again if I'm free Alan, can you add me to the list pls?
Your on the email list Steve..... :)

As soon the finer details are sorted we will be banging out an email to everybody who has been before as a first dibs on hotel accommodation and of course a place at the curry....

Best part about the whole weekend for me is the Sat night as its always a top laugh, and great to catch up with guys and meet new fellow bass plonkers...and come the Sunday you are all like best mates....

Most guys coming here travel a long, long way...some from way down south. Its a good indication of how much of a laugh we get out of it....

Its the most relaxed bass bash I have been to....top event

Of course the hangover can sometimes be a little bit of a pain.....

  13. Went to see the Manring last night in harrogate. He was jaw droppingly good :)

An amazing player, very, very musical stuff on the whole. He did two sets, little bit of chatting about the basses, but mainly just some amazing playing.

Without doubt the best £10 I have spent.......stunning, just a stunning player...

Joe Zon was also there with a number of Zon Basses, he gave a short talk over how he started up and what got him into making the Zon Basses, really relaxed and informal....

Had real good laugh with Owain (bottomendian) top bloke - always good to meet real people......:)

And finished off the night with a healthy kebab.....:)

Big thanks to Phil for organising the event (and thanks for getting the lights off disco mode  )

    Dave

  14.
Thanks for the update Phil, change of date means I cant make this now on the thursday.... :)
Game on again Phil.....I have managed to move stuff around....Its going to cost me dearly of course as it was the wifes night out that has been cancelled for this..... I can see the pound signs moving before my eyes all ready.... :)

Hopefully have a couple of other twangers coming along with me once you have the details sorted...

    Cheers, Dave

  15.
The event date has now been revised, due to the way the rest of the artists' commitments have panned out.

This will now happen on Thursday 21st October. The date change has meant a need to change venue too, so as soon as that has been sorted I'll update you.

    Thanks,

    Phil
Thanks for the update Phil, change of date means I cant make this now on the thursday.... :)

I will have to try and catch one of his other dates on the tour whilst he is over here as I really dont want to miss him if possible...

    Cheers, Dave

  16.
Dave Perry also did a lot of more scientific tests of Comp Driver Vs Piezo and the results were surprising.
Indeed....

I built a pair of Bill Fitz DR290's each loaded with a pair of JBL 2416 1" comp drivers, bi-amped, time aligned and EQ'd

I then built a second pair of DR280's (the DR280 is the same cab as the DR290 but loaded with 12piezos in place of the pair of comp drivers)

I had built these for bass backline but thought I would use the opportunity to try out the piezo / comp driver debate.

Myself and two other Pa providers had the rigs set side by side, both Eq'd for a fairly flat response. The DR280's loaded with piezo's sounded every bit as good as the JBL's (in fact they had a little smoother top end response)

Bearing in mind that these didn't need the extra amp, external digital crossover or time alignment...its was pretty surprising. I imediatley stripped the JBL's and retrofitted them with Piezos.

When I was testing the piezos with my RTA, I did find a massive difference between manufacturers, in output and freq response.

One thing that has to be said is that all of the Horn loaded stuff that I have built / tried needs a fair amount of EQ to get them sounding bang on, and they tend to be far bigger boxes than the typical baffle loaded boxes that need far less EQ, but you also need more power for the smaller boxes....nothing is perfect.

    Good stuff Rob !

    Dave
