I wonder how well that dull grey livery will cope with a few miles on the clock.
Not talking about robustness of the cabs here or the finish so much..... but will they still look good in a few years time..?
One thing that will always polarise views is the looks of cabs. Colour and style of a cab some will love some will hate, and I would expect nothing less. From the very outset I chose not to just make 'another black box'. its an easy option, but I wanted something to look just a little different.

As far as the finish holding up, I have spent years trying all sorts of different cab finishes from the standard heavy duty carpet, thin Tolex, water based paint on tuffcab,

Non of them even come close to this product.

Obviously for something to still look good in a few years time is exactly down to longterm robustness, it goes hand in hand.

The tuffcab / Alldcroft paint I have used for years on PA cabs . I was actually at school with the Lee and Julie aldcroft who produce the tuffcab paint, its good stuff, but marks and chips far to readily

Schroeder went onto using a similar stuff, and again its easily chipped.

Carpet can be tough but after a period of time it will tear or pull,
    Tolex rips and tears

All of them can still look great after years of gigging if looked after.

The coating that I have opted to use on these cabs is possibly the toughest thing I have come across, but the biggest issue was finding a company that can apply it accurately.

I had a world of pain with a couple of companies who's product was fine, but application was shocking. The company I use have ex Airspace sprayers and car sprayers applying the stuff and all to a very high standard.

The product is completely monolithic (sprayed on in one operation and cures with no joints or seams) and is completely water proof. It can be scrubbed down with water and soap and just wiped dry.

Aside from the cab obviously wanting to sound good, choice of materials and final finish is pretty much the most important part of the build for me

There is downside to using certain materials and that is weight. I always prefer to have the cabs made from very high quality Birch ply. Its great to work with and very consistent, but good quality Finish Birch is Dense and therefore a little heavier than using something like a poplar ply. I use fairly thin panels with internal bracing, but even so, one cab made form poplar will weigh less than the same made from Birch. birch is much tougher and denser and panels are stronger...

To try and make any cab stack up against the competition, it has too look and be built to a very high standard. Every product can have niggles and issues (thats the nature of production) but all you can do is try and minimise the potential problems.

I have of course had the cabs stacked up against lots and lots of the obvious competition, at bass bashes, private trials, gigs etc, however sound is subjective so it would do me no good whatsoever to attempt to say Cab X is better than cab Y, as every body has there own perception of what works for them.

The 112's tilt back stacking system works fantastically for small gigs where you are right up against your backline as you can tilt the top cab back and get a good earful of bassy goodness

Hope that's answered a few questions

  2. HI Chaps

Just though I would post couple of things about the 112's.

The original prototype 212 was gigged for about 2 years before I produced the EAD Foundation 212...slow and steady wins the race etc... :)

The 112's have gone through a complete redesign regarding porting and taken them back to the original three way design and a redesigned crossover.
These are the cabs that Eude and Spoombung tried out last weekend at a bass fumble in reading.

They have been on gig tests for the last 6-12 months and I still have a couple of mods that I want to make, but only regarding handle position - so its very nearly there. But even then, once the prototype is completed getting them produced still takes a world of pain and time - remember, these are not cabs being knocked up in a garage or shed.. All CNC factory produced cabs, coating carried out by a specialist company, CNC punched grills with logo all screen printed etc etc.....

We did some intensive testing out with an upright over the weekend using the pure power amp stage of an amp and the upright players John East Blend unit, so essentially no eq or pre colouring the signal and it was a top result for the upright sound. Really very pleased with it.

I have been very happy with them as a cab solution for electric bass, but wanted to check things out for the upright - and I think its there.

Simple things like relocating the logo as it was now in front of the mid range driver.....

This was the original 2way cab next to the Foundation 212

And here is the latest incarnation with larger rear porting and back to the full three way spec

  3. £300

As the band I am working with now has a full time keyboard player, my toes are having a rest.....

Up for sale are my Roland PK5 keyboard Midi pedals that I have used with great effect to add keyboard backing whilst playing bass.

The unit is in full working order and is limited only in as much as what synth you plug into it and how good your Michael Flatly dancing is...

I have used them for several years playing with a number of bands adding some great synth string parts

I used the unit with a couple of Synth modules, the last one being the Korg NS5R (also up for sale)

I would much prefer direct bank transfer or cheque or cash to avoid paypal fees, but if you must pay by paypal then add 4% to the final figure

  4.
If you want people to bid on it, stick to eBay.
But that's exactly what I have done ? This add is placed to draw peoples attention to the Ebay add.

I am not asking people to buy it on here - am saying please go and bid if you want it.

I have asked for clarification from the mod on this as it does not state anywhere that this is not allowed.

The ebay section of the forum states:-

"This forum is for the discussion of Ebay auctions. Please do not promote your own auctions. If you have something to sell, please use the For Sale forums"
So that is what I have done

Now if this site is so locked down that people dont want to be able to advertise gear for sale on Ebay that's fine, but it needs to be stated clearly.

And, according to forum rules, finishing price!
It just says a price not a finishing price....

Cant see anything about posting ebay links being against forum rules.....?? if it is can somebody please point out where this is.

    Thanks, Dave

  9. Status Empathy Headless 5 string
The very first headless arched top empathy bass made

    Status Empathy on Ebay

Up for sale is my very special Status Empathy 5 String Headless bass

This was commissioned for me and is the very first Headless arched top empathy bass

When I had the bass built I was very specific about wanting the original Empathy Headless tuning system rather than the separate units that Status use, and I also wanted the original Empathy neck.

The body shape was based upon what become the Eclipse Artiste, but at the time Rob did not do that in a headless option.

It’s a stunning bass guitar, and one I vowed I would never part company with, but sadly its simply never getting played and I could do with freeing up some funds.

It comes with the Status 300 board, hyperactive pickups, original Status case and original Status literature.

Here is the interesting bit. I asked Dawn and Rob if they could photo the bass being built. Whilst this is common enough these days with bass forums, it was a rarity back then.

I have a full set of construction photos and a numbered description of the full build that Dawn sent over so you can see each and every element of the bass being put together.

This is genuinely a completely unique Empathy – and as the documentation shows, it was the very first arched top empathy ever made.
It’s been lovingly looked after by myself, and its condition is almost as good as the day it arrived.

It has gained one very small surface mark on the inside face of the upper horn, and the end of the neck has a couple of very small marks. The pickup cover has worn slightly where I rest my thumb whilst playing, but all in all its in stunning condition.

I have a buy it now figure of £1550

I would much prefer direct bank transfer or cheque to avoid paypal fees, but if you must pay by paypal then add 4% to the final figure

I will happily ship it oversees but the fees will have to be agreed as the £20 is for UK shipping only

    Dave

  10. The clear out continues

This is my trusty time tested Peavey 2x10 cab that has been loaded with a pair of Eminence Gamma 10" 300w drivers (these are now roughly £60 each)

Its a proper ply built box, not chipboard as lots of the peavey boxes are

These are great sounding little cabs, very underrated

Fully working horn and crossover, carpet has a few rips but still pretty presentable.

Its a great cab to have as a backup or to be left at the rehearsal studio.

I have too many cabs and this is just taking up real estate in my office now.

£65 pick up only or local meet up

  11. And yet more trade stands.....

  14. Nice to meet a few of you guys at the show. My ears have just about stopped ringing. Lots of great gear on show.

As others have said the volume was , and always is an issue at these shows. Its never likely to change I guess. The 15 minute time slots to try and demo stuff became pretty hard work when so much was going on around you, most of the time we just banged in the earplugs to ride the storm, certainly a real struggle to talk to people and a little too much non stop self indulgent twangy twiddles going on from some stands.

Great to catch up with some familiar faces and meet some new ones. Had a good chat with walman about bass guitars suprisingly, and synth keyboard pedals as we both fancy ourselves as tap dancing bass players.

Shame as an exhibitor that you dont get to see the acts, but thats life !

On the whole i had a great time with john east and alan, always a great laugh irrespective of what the shows are like.

    Dave
