1.
Handles a 5 string easily. Dave Perry subjected them to some awesome slap from his Status when we A/B'd them against his Omni10 and they sounded the business. The Omni wins in the mids department and is slightly more efficient, but the Zoots did seem to have more warmth. At about 20-25% less than the equivalent Aguilars and lighter, they are worth considering. So much so I have Mike working on a compact, lightweight 1x15 then I have all situations covered.
These cabs are without doubt the lightest cab I have EVER picked up, and I thought the little Aguilar 112's where lightweight.....they must be built using helium filled timber...its simply amazing. Reading a line that says they are 'x pounds weight' means nothing until you lift them up......as for awesome slap bass....maybe slap head is closer to the mark.... I would genuinely love to know what timber these are made from, cos the drivers are nothing more than standard Eminence Pressed steel frames.
I am not that keen on Neo's, (Nor is Bill F apparently and he doesn't suggest using Neo's in the Omni 10).
Completely the wrong way round I'm afraid, this is directly from the plans (and its well known on bills site that the 2510 is the best option for the Omni's.....)
For medium power applications up to 300 watts the recommended driver is the Eminence Basslite S2010 (neo driver)......For higher power applications, up to 500 watts, the recommended driver is the Eminence Deltalite II 2510 (another neo driver)
Dave
 2. When I saw that photo I laughed...looked like a father and son moment (eldest wisest son of course)...even down to the same dress code....'one day my son all this will be yours'..... I was more than impressed with the Omni 10, Looking forward to the Omni15 build...give me a couple of weeks and I should have it done...... Dave
 3.
are ya gonna buy a schroeder?
Nope.....Im going to build a BF Omni 15....... Building cabs has just become an obsession......... Got to say that your Schroeder did sound very, very good though......other than its weight its possibly best of the bunch for my taste in bass sound....
 4. Very interested in this Alex. Nice mid range enclosure I assume you are adding a fair number of 'panel to panel' cross braces as well as the side panel braces ? Dave
 5.
How much does it weigh.....
I have not weighed it.....but its roughly the same weight and size of a pair of Aguilar GS112's.....but outguns them in the midrange where it counts live. Building out of Birch ply adds a little more weight, but also adds a lot better quality to the construction.... Its like picking up a 4x10 bass cab with no drivers installed..... Dave
 6. The New omni 10 I brought down this weekend is up for sale if anybody is interested. Details here:- Omni 10 for sale Dave
 7. Brand new built. £350 Fully loaded with two 2510 neo drivers and 10 melded crossfired piezo's Rated at 500w 4 ohms. Massive mid range clarity. No problem handling 5 string bass. I use nothing other than the very best quality Birch Ply for building cabs - nothing else comes close for building. Its wired with 2 speakon sockets. This cab faired incredibly well up against top end competition at the Basschat meet up this weekend. I had already pretty much decided that I wanted to build an Omni15 prior to finishing this cab(far bigger and more expensive build than the Omni 10)...building bass cabs is simply a passion that I cant stop now......If I could afford to keep this and build the Omni15 I would, no question.... Its literally two weeks old and left the house for the first time this weekend. Here is a soundbite played with my Status 5 string and Mark bass head (flat EQ) Omni10 soundbite This is the build diary:- Omni 10 build diary Here are some shots of the cab:- Here are some shots during the build:- You can see the fully sealed piezo box that I have used here so that leaking piezos are out of the equation:- Pm if interested Dave
 8.
With regard to the sound, I have always said that it sounds good with a flatwound fretless, but never really thought that through - a flatwound fretless doesn't have much output in the area you find overpowering. Also, when I use roundwounds on a fretted Yamaha, I turn down the upper mids...
That makes perfect sense....Its all coming back to me now..... Dave
 9.

Sorry Mottlefeeder.... ...I still think the mids massively overpower the omni 12 so much in the btm end...but do read it in the context of the rest of the thread...:-
The only cab that didn't inspire me was the Omni 12 ...I do wonder if the btm end driver is fully bedded in yet as on paper it should have lots more, (I have experienced the exact same thing on a previous Omni15 that I heard before, and after the Driver had been bedded in....massive difference in btm end projection)...
As I said, I came across the exact same sound with the Omni 15 that i tried out in Leeds, after a couple of gigs I tried it out again and suddenly the btm end was explosive, to the point that it moved from my 'not to build' list to 'I must build it next'.... Will in Leeds had his Omni 15 for roughly 12 months previously but only played it at very low levels in his house. Will said that his first gig at higher levels 'didnt inspire him' as it was lacking the btm end, the second gig however was a completely different tale, and it was after this that I heard the cab again in the same room with my gear again....without doubt the sound had radically changed after his loud gigs...massive btm end. Dave
 10. Top time meeting you guys. Some I already knew, just didnt know it as you all use silly handles...... Interesting thing was that every single cab was lightweight and compact, no big hefty 8x10's or even 4x10's. times are a changin in the world of bass cabs...the clever ones are using small compact cabs..... Zoot cabs are simply the lightest thing I have played through, sounded very good, rounded, very much like the Aguilars that I have tried out. Biggest thing for me was A/B testing the new Omni 10 against other cabs using my Bass and amp...its the only way to know how a settup sounds...try it... The Omni 10 suprised me with how well it kept up with the other cabs, It strenths are very strong mids. Its only a week old and has yet to be tried out in anger... Alans Berg cabs are great, but for my taste lacked mids (which is very much the sound I like). So many nice Basses.... One of Alans ACG bass guitars was there, lovely...now if he could only sort out a graphite headless neck for me..... His pre-amps are an astounding bit of kit, but you certainly need to forget your usual 'turn it all up to 11' routine. Fantastic tone control. Johns Fretless Overwater bass was a stunner...But then I'm a sucker for wood.... Ste's 2x12 sounded fantastic, for me it came to life when sat on the deck as it coupled with the floor better increasing its low end. The only cab that didnt inspire me was the Omni 12 ...I do wonder if the btm end driver is fully bedded in yet as on paper it should have lots more, (I have experienced the exact same thing on a previous Omni15 that I heard before, and after the Driver had been bedded in....massive difference in btm end projection)... All in all it was top way to spend a few hours on a sunday afternoon.... Big thanks to the guys at the Studio for allowing this to go on, and massive thanks to every body who turned up with gear to play with...and big thanks to Ped and the other organisers. Dave Perry (omni 10 builder & bald status player with no hat).......
 11.
See you guys there (no hat tho) Russ
See what you have done now Alan.....its a full on Hat frenzy...Good job I always keep mine in my Bass Case ...
 12.
'offical' start time of 1pm Address is Bluebird Studios, Snowdon Road, St annes - google maps link, it looks pretty straight forward to get there... Cost for hiring the studio is £70, £5 each should cover it...
Is this all still the same.....? See you all down there Sunday 1pm ish.....! Dave Perry
 13.
If no-one else takes one, I'll throw in my MarkBass 4x10 cab.
Please bring along the Mark Bass if you can, would like to try it out..... Dave
 14. Perhaps if you are using bits of cheap bellwire or string to transmit the current, that may be true.... ....The sort of power rating Alan is talking about here it makes absolutely no difference...go and chastise yourself Rob Having said that a good pal of mine and seasoned player, was still using a signal lead as a speaker cable..... ..as long as you are using any standard speaker cable it does make no audible difference at all..... Dave
 15.
...it DOES make a difference!
Not even in the wildest of dreams does it make any difference at all.....If you can hear a difference then its in your head, or a faulty lead As long as the cable is capable of transmitting the current then its fine. Its standard practice on much higher power PA cabs to do this. Check out any 4x10 cab and you will see they effectively use nothing more than bell wire to connect the drivers together..... Dave
 16.
I would also be really interested to check out the BFM cab. Someone will have to lend me a poweramp though!!
No problem, I will be bringing along my Mark Bass head for any to try it out with..
 17.
Bloody hell - is this the same Dave Perry who played with Shady & U4ria and stood in for us (Hugh Jarre Soul Band) from time to time?
Yep
 18. HI Alan As well as long term bass player (as well you know) I am involved in PA and bass cab speaker construction. Its become a fair old obsession...!! Lets say your 2 drivers are rated at 300w RMS @ 8ohms Thats 600w RMS @ 4ohms when linked together (and it really does not matter if you link the cabs together or straight into the amp contrary to the second post - if it was a single 2x12 cab you would only be feeding one cable from the amp.....) Speakers have another fact that not many people area aware of, and thats power compression. Put simply, if you continuously put 300w into your 300w driver it will start to get hot and loose output (you may have experienced gigs where your rig sounded really loud to start with but lost output toward the end of the night ??....) The typical figure before power compression comes into play is roughly HALF the RMS rating.. Put simply anything more than half the RMS rating is just turning into heat, and is not adding to the output level...Anybody who has played a long gig with high power could have experienced power compression coming into play but simply not be aware of what is going on..... But - and this is huge factor:- If you actually measured the voltage coming out of your power amp during playing, and worked out what the actual wattage was, I think you would be astounded how low a level your 900w amp is actually putting out. Its not to say your amp is not capable of 900w, just that due to the type of playing being dynamic, and all the other gain factors coming into play, its typically a LOT less than you expect. This is why most people don't have a problem (including myself when I ran a pre/power amp combo for a while) Dave
 19. The sure SM58 is pretty much the norm, but there are lots of fake ones on ebay....buyer beware..... The behringer XM8500 is simply fantastic value, any body rubbishing it is simply on name and not actual testing I imagine...at least you know its a fake SM58..... I bought one as a cheap backup mic a few years ago(£17...) for my PA hire and after testing it out straight away purchased another three. Its very well built, solid, sounds surprisingly close to the standard SM58 its based upon, and more importantly I didn't mind putting it out on stages with idiots, if it gets knocked/dented, its just £17 and not £70.... I would heartily recommend it. For what its worth my mic inventory comprises several SM58's Beta58, beta 57, Audix OM7, Audio Technica drum mics...and three Behringer cheap and cheerful mics. I Often use the Behringers with no hesitation. Dave
 20. One freshly completed Omni 10 As a fair number of bass players are interested in Bills cabs this one will be coming down to the meet up in Lytham St Annes...in fact I brought the build forward specifically to bring it down to this event. Only a shame I sold all my DR280's or I would be bringing one of these also. Will be very interesting to compare it against other known branded cabs. This is a great shot to give an exact idea of size. Its sat next to one of my previous little rehearsal cabs, an old Peavey 210TX (long since reloaded with alternate drivers....) Also will be bringing my Status Custom made Empathy Headless 5 string. Dave

 22. Alex, just found this thread. What are you building, do you have another thread with the details ? Very interested in what you are proposing. 9mm should be spot on with adequate internal bracing Edit just spotted the dims and tuning.... Its pretty large (6x10 size !!), I assumed it was going to be a tiny little AGUILAR type cab....but then the driver does benefit from internal volume to get the external volume.... Dave
 23. Just spotted this, so close I cant miss it...... Will bring along my Status Custom empathy 5 string, and hopefully a Bill fitzmaurice omni 10 and my Mark Bass LMK (if I can get the omni built in time - Just sold my 4 DR280's otherwise I would have brought these down to show you what a real bass cab sounds like.... ) Dave
 24. I also built this years ago....its crap...it clearly aint for sale, but has LED's in the side http://www.frappr.com/?a=viewphoto&id=...&myphotos=1
