1. The tobias looks like a thru neck? Please can you say? Do you have any other photos please?
2. Fohhn have a single 12 sub that weighs in at 19kg. And its active so no heavy amp rack. Theyre major money though.
3. Initial report, for what its worth. Just 5 piibts for now as I will need to spend some tine fiddling. Ive no drummer to compete with atm so volume levels were relatively restrained. 1. The twin channels. Is there a clear difference in voicing or gain? I found it to be quite subtle. 2. The first thing I did was something that resembled bottoming out the power supply. I'll need to experiment with that, I couldn't repeat it when it had warmed up a little. The limiter will no doubt prove to be essential. 3. The toppyness previously mentioned... through my dirty old peavey cabs, I found the hf rather smooth, no harshness in sight. 4. The deep switch. Magnificent. 5. With the mm sub ramped up at full tilt and eq set roughly null, pad engaged, channel b gain wound all the way up... produced every inch the gorgeous growl, really full bodied with it. This tone setting in particular appeared very complementary to the distorted guitars around me. I'm really pleased with it. There's lots more fettling to be done yet, but it's made a great start. Cheers all!
4. And she's here. Piccies and thoughts will follow in due course, we're straight off to practice later
5.
Ah yes, I did find that one... was hoping for a clip with one in a band situation. Seriously cool/quirky look to the Iceman. As for sound... does this float your boat? If it does, then maybe an '80s Aria might fit the bill. P.
Cheers BA. It's a little ploinky (?) for my liking. However with a little more modern grit and a bit of a mid cut its probably not a million miles away. Not knowing much about Aria, is there anything specifically comes to mind? I did find the odd Schecter that was getting close. Anyway, all food for thought.
6.
Which vid? I've never knowingly heard an Iceman outside a demo.
http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=8&ved=0CEQQtwIwBw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3Dp6LF_eum_6w&ei=4mGfUMerHcLO0QWclICYCA&usg=AFQjCNEK3N_tqXzRMj4HKovUPMGqef7yrQ Hoping the link works... Posting on my phone. Otherwise search YouTube for 1994 ibanez iceman and it should pull the video up. The guy's beef with the music shop is irritating, but it's a good vid on the whole. And yeah, if I'm going the route of the customer bass I suppose the trusty Sub has little to fear....!
7. Sorry folks. I would like some help, if only for long term planning, for a specific bass that I might like to buy. Briefly, a black one. And like a stingray, but with a thru neck. Gotta love the humbuckers. I've always wanted a thru neck, as it seems to make natural sense to brace the strings against a single piece of wood. Does such a beast exist anywhere? I saw a YouTube video on a rare as rocking horse droppings ibanez iceman which would have fit the bill, but said axe is 20 years out of production and probably £steep, if possible to find at all. It was *the* sound, though...
8. I found out for sure on Monday )
9. I think I love this message board. Cheers folks!
10. I've never bought a bass amp before so perhaps a little encouragement was all that I needed... 'bugrit'. Now where's my credit card...? Thanks all )
11. Before I go and buy one. I've got approx £600 to spend, that's the sort of power and feature set I'm after... The valve warmth and low weight do appeal. I do need some power as most of the use will come with a very loud thrash band. I'm driving a couple of peavey cabs with a music man sub 4, and looking for a deep 'crunch'. I'm not a fan of finger squeak so it'll need a controlled top end. What dya think folks? Am I looking in the right place with the mb? I'd love to try one but there isn't one locally. I can live with taking a chance on it... Cheers
12. RCF boxes are usually very good, do avoid Mackie as theyre nothing of what they once were. Theres surprising bang for buck in thd cheap JBL and Wharfedale stuff, too, imo
13. As above. Most loop amps - which are a fairly simple take on any other power amp - won't last more than 5 years, possibly up to 10. The point stands that such devices do yield to the ravages of time, same as anything else, so why risk the redecoration? I deal, by proxy, with induction loops on a daily basis and I imagine that either something exceptional has been set up, or somebody's pulling your leg. Consider this - if any piece of mains-driven equipment physically couldn't be switched off/ isolated in the venue, in case of emergency, would the local council give it a license?
14. I've just enough knowledge to be dangerous on this subject. Where we've talked about eq and clipping, when winding up the bass pot, which might be a low shelf at 80Hz, say, why does this have a more pronounced effect on the available headroom than wildly spinning up the mid and treble controls? (pretty sure I know the answer to this - energy under the wave - but i'm interested in the checksum)
15.
Vasectomy?
LOL, or that.
16. I'm in a similar situation to you - but have my cabs but looking to get something to drive them. The GK MB Fusion caught my eye and in several months of sporadic bursts of researching opinion, I can't recall seeing anyone give a negative word to it.. I'm pretty sure that's where my money is headed. There's a little brother in the range which might be more your bag, look up an MB200. That also garners very positive comments in this parish.
17. Hi Steve What have you got? (read: I don't know). If youve got any tunes on myspace or youtube or what have you, I'll have a listen Cheers
18. d'oh. read the thread excitedly waiting to write something about the intrinsic distortion properties of speakers, but got there to discover someone had already done it. and done a better job than I could ;op
19. 2 in series, paralled with two others in parallel would get you to about 3.2 ohms. expect the two in parallel to need replacing first, tho. this is no better than 2 ohm, as far as your amps health is concerned, really, so to echo the previous, stick with what you've got theOP. if you need more umph, consider picking up a small light single 15 with an 8 ohm driver, pop it underneath.
20.
Isn't one yet. I need to speak to them more after the weekend. But some people with money aside for it will put me in a better position to figure what can be done.
I'm waiting for developments on this here valvey B500 because it sounds wonderful, and failing that I think I'm going to look at the GK MBFusion which is a similar idea. You've piqued my interest, tho...
21. Its been a while since I really played, but I work with drums so would like to get back into. I've a nice kit and most of my cymbals are good but the gear will need work, as will my skills. Happy to consider anything in the broad church of rock music. Leave a message or supply words to rob dot csr at gmail dot com if you'd like to meet for a pint. Cheers
22. Reasonably skilled and creative bass player with ok kit, I'm looking for more or less anything in the broad church of rock and roll to step into. Ideally this would be fast intelligent and gutsy music. Have car, some local contacts and gig experience. Drop us a message or post wordlage and a s.a.e (not really) to rob dot csr at gmail dot com cheers folks
23.
Mine cut out, I found the problem. There is a thermal protection thermistor(I think) near the power supply. It is a disk shaped component that bridges two pcb boards and is mounted in turrets. It was not soldered in to one turret (push fit I guess). Soldered it in, no cut out problems again.
cheers geez, I may have a look at that
24. Whatever i can get away with, without it cutting out incessantly *grumbles* I really like the contour pot sound, tho. Its usually more or less flat on the eq tho and that aeems to sit pretty nicely in a metal band mix.
