Made for the Japanese market with that decal and the only other black one I've seen was being played by JJ Burnel back in the early/mid 80s..... that was a Japanese market one too.  Just picked up a BB1024X otherwise I'd be tempted to hit the button 🙂

    Thanks Paul...

The bass has several dings here and there as you would expect but no nasty chips, at some point in its life some numpty replaced the bridge pickup with a standard Jazz one but luckily he kept the original which has now been installed, the only thing is you can just about see the rout edge but as its black you wont see from a distance, does not affect the performance of the bass and its all original with no other modifications. Other than that in good overall condition and getting hard to come by now, one of the best Yamaha have made IMHO

Frets are in good shape, truss rod is fine and electrics working as they should. It will be shipped in the top quality Yamaha bass case which is new ( £169 ), strap locks fitted and the mono strap with the buttons will be included which cost about £60.

The front of the headstocks were still sprayed with clear nitro (that's why they are offer darker than the rest of the neck).

A theory; It could have been reacting badly to environmental changes, lacquer cracked significantly, moist got under the lacquer, lacquer peeled off, headstock got refinished.

    S

I often wondered why that was the case with the front so your theory is the most plausible. I am happy enough that the bass is all legit bar the decal and maybe some refinish to the body

It's not necessarily intended as being fake, but as part of restoration. Good chance it's a replacement decal imo.

As pointed out, there are a lot of drilling holes in the neckpocket. I wouldn't be surprised if the body and neck both have been refinished. Based on this pictures.

I had a closer look at the decal with magnification and you can see evidence that it was cut with sissors and not as smooth on the edges as a proper factory one but a good decent job all the same

That decal is really interesting. I cannot find another like it anywhere online or in my various books. It doesn't make sense to me that anyone would create a fake that was different to a genuine decal.

The guy whom I bought the bass from had it for over 30 years and he didnt get any work done on it so the mystery continues. He did contact Fender a few years ago and they confirmed that it was a 77 neck due to the date code on the heel, to me it just feels right and as you say why would anyone create a fake

The code is correct for a maple board ‘77 P Bass neck. So if the code is Fender legit, then it must of had a new decal. Is the body original finish? Sometimes matching headstocks were done on a refin.

The body is finished in white which has now yellowed and is original , no other signs of a refinish

The decal isn't correct. Even if it would be a '77 with a late use of the TV decal, the patent numbers don't look like other examples I've found when looking at '76 decals (the patent numbers are supposed to be in 1 line, not 2).

This is the date stamp, is there a chance that the logo has been reapplied at some stage maybe

    Serial number on the headstock?

Thats the mystery Si, no headstock serial but a date stamp on the heel for 77, it all looks genuine, pots pickups and body are 77 just the lack of serial on the neck. I have contacted Fender for some info on it

From what I understand the FRR 42 is the QC stamp, Jose Serna the neck maker, and I think 4071 may be the batch/factory code , can’t make out the sticker though, sometimes it’s the same sticker that’s on the back of the pickguard but that one has letters, I’m curious now 😁

Has me baffled as there is no sticker on the guard. All looks authentic and the neck is great

The sticker which is hard to make out but looks like Fender serial number to the left and to the right I can only make out ERER
