1. The "Groove: No Treble" podcasts pass a few hours - lots of players on there. But they're not focussed specifically on gear if that's what you're looking for?
2. Sounds like a fun selection of tunes to work through!
3. I too have always loved bass synth sounds. I've spend thousands of pounds on various effects over the years attempting to approximate the sounds via my bass guitar. However, I've never Neen completely satisfied with the results. So, I have now bought this - Moog Little Phatty Stage II! I'll have to do some serious practice at home before unleashing my noise making on the public! 4. I actually just claimed it through my household contents insurance.
5. I'm simply having a new one made for me. Thanks to the generosity of the insurance company!
6. the key thing to do is sand the sharp fingerboard edges- makes the neck more comfortable in the hand while playing. Also, sanded the fret ends - they're pretty harsh when you get the raw neck. As for finishing the wood, I've only sprayed them - never used oil or a similar substance. Using nitrocellulose lacquer from Steve at Manchester Guitar Tech, application is pretty easy - only takes a couple of light coats. Saying that, you need to apply a couple of initial spray passes along the walnut skink stripe as the walnut is more open grained compared to the maple. After spraying the fingerboard, you'll have to scrape the lacquer off the frets.
7. I stubbed my toe on the edge of a rug, and stumbled on top of my bass - which was laying against the sofa! Strings went, "SNAP!!", and the neck gave a "CRUNCH" sound. Aaaagh! Saying that - I did the deed last Sunday, spoke to my insurance company on Monday where they requested pics and quotes for a replacement bass. I got those things to them by Wednesday evening. I then received an email today (Friday) saying everything was fine and they'd pay me the full cost of a replacement bass minus my £100 excess! Result!!! They're gonna transfer the money straight into my account on Monday. Incredibly quick service, and totally hassle free.
8. I wonder whether I can fix this with T-Cut? Aaaaagh!!!!!!!
9. I just bought one of these all valve heads via my local Facebook classified ads page. Mine is in the current metal "bird cage" format (so you can see the valves glowing while in use). Fantastic sounding piece of equipment. http://youtu.be/JueiW00ZC88
10. I love this song. In this version, Paul's voice sounds great. However, the video is rubbish, and more importantly, the keyboard melody line at the key change is quite possibly the most gratingly awful thing in a pop song - really atonal. http://youtu.be/SgnjwUMPCgA
11. I tend to use the 208 when I'm on church bass duties myself. I've also used it on a couple of bar gigs and it held up really well. It's great not having to lug my "big rig" to every gig I do now.
12. I am a numpty!!!! I received the Fane speakers today and fitted them into my BG250 208. Plugged in one of my basses and the sound was...... awful!! Really middly with very little low end. I was so unimpressed that I decided to revert to the original speakers. However, when I unscrewed the top speaker from the cab I saw that I had connected the speaker cables to the opposite terminals!!!! Aaaagh!!! So, I reversed the connectors to the correct format, screwed the new speaker back in place and tried again. What a difference! Lovely and full sounding. I'm liking what I'm hearing so far. So, lesson learned - always ensure that you connect the colour coded connected wires to the correct speaker terminals.
13. I've just ordered a pair of the 225s - got them for £82 including delivery from the place mentioned above. If you sign up for their offer scheme (which doesn't cost anything, has no commitment from you either, it simply sends offer emails about their products), then you get the instant discount - result! I'll receive my package tomorrow or Thursday, and will install the speakers then. I'm looking forward to hearing the new units in place.
14.
15. Here's a ink to a previous build thread which has links to some of my other builds / refinish threads. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/194340-6-string-andy-summers-telecaster-guitar-project/page__fromsearch__1 a.d here's a link to the build thread for my Olympic White Jazz Bass build http://basschat.co.uk/topic/217598-olympic-white-6662-style-jazz-bass-build/page__fromsearch__1
16. I've posted on here about my previous builds / spray jobs. I did a Shell Pink P-Bass, a shell pink refinish on my Fender USA 62 reissue Jazz Bass, my Olympic White 62/66 Jazz Bass build, Andy Summers Tele tribute build, Surf Green refinish on my brown Fender Eric Johnson Strat.
17. Phil at Guitarbuild made the body for me. Early 50s repro with the oversized neck pocket lip and the router hump in the lower cutaway.
18. Thanks Gary. I'll let the hardware age through natural use (also, I don't know how to age it to make it look realistic anyhow! Hahaha) I'm also thinking of making a new guitar in the next few weeks - 2 tone, maple necked Strat for a vintage 50s look, but having Clapton boost circuitry inside for added versatility
19. I've always loved the Blackguard Tele look. So, I made myself one. Bare swamp ash body having grain filler applied. I used really straight grained, lightweight swamp ash to try a different make the instrument as resonant as possible. Next up was applying the translucent white blonde base coat. I then applied a couple of light coats of butterscotch nitrocellulose lacquer, then a couple of light coats of clear gloss. I wanted the overall finish the best really thin in order to allow the wood to still resonate. I also applied a couple of light coats of clear gloss lacquer to the bare wood maple neck. The neck was then buffed to a shine. The pickguard is a fibreboard unit, which I sprayed with clear gloss lacquer. I used a milled output jack cup to retain the period correct look. I've always loved the crazing on nitrocellulose lacquer finishes. So, how can you replicate it? Simple, you just put his the body in the freezer overnight. Simply putting it in a fridge- even on its lowest temp.setting - won't be enough to induce the crazing. When you remove the body from the freezer, rub stain or dark shoe polish onto the body. This will stain the cracked lacquer lines I also applied a period correct decal on the headstock. I also used shorter bridge height adjustment screws. This means the screws no longer protruding from the saddles. Mh friend Chris Mcintyre assembled and set up the guitar. It plays and sounds great.
20. I was watching this collection of live clips yesterday. Free really were fantastic. They were a band who I knew of growing up as a kid, but it was my friend Paul Turner who really turned me on to them (he's a HUGE fan).
