1. Well, I received a TC Electronic RS210 via DPD a couple of hours ago and I have to say that it does match up superbly well to my RH450, which is no real surprise at all as they were designed to go together. The Baer/RH rig still rocks hard and sounds absolutely glorious with dirty tones on my P, but with the Stingray-influenced Ibanez, the clean tones are somewhat lacking in sparkle. The RH is inherently a slightly dark amp, and the Baers are clearly, by design, limited in their absolute top end response. For any kind of sparkle, it seems they are not the ideal mix. I think for my needs the RS cabs are a better compromise, and I can get my dirty P tones close enough to that with the Baers. And with the lack of a BF super 12T to try (and not forgetting the wait time if I decided to order) I think I'm going with the RS cabs. So, final answer, I'm getting another RS210 and selling the Baers. Gulp. Hope I won't regret this.
2.
Going to go against the trend and say that I prefer a jazz for clanky tones. Had a Stingray for a while, couldn't get on with it.
Well, doesn't everyone know that a P is best for clanky tones ?
3. Cool. Would make a nice cheap bass. Just bumping you, with the thought that your pics show how weird the shape of a jaguar looks upside-down. Or is it just me ? At least you have the right-way-up pic too. Good luck with the sale !
4. Hmmmmm, let me think ......... http://basschat.co.uk/topic/205949-vintage-1970s-dimarzio-precision-pickup/
5.
Does Flea not have more of a scooped sound?
Slightly scooped I'd say. I certainly wouldn't be boosting any mids to get it that's for sure. Plenty of treble there, but of course not too much ! Back to the OP's question, yes having a sufficiently low action to get some clank and buzz, but not to choke off the note is needed. And when you hit a string hard it is easy to choke the note if the action is too low. Also, experiement with striking the strings nearer the bridge or the neck. Experiment. Also, are we not talking about a fingerstyle tone here ? I suspect that Flea uses his fingers to get it, although I'm not hugely familiar with him or his technique. It's just that some people are talking about picks and pick gauges. You'll get a load more clank and punch with a hard fingerstyle technique, which also involves plucking the string at an angle 45 degrees in towards the body of the bass, not at right angles to it. With your Jazz bass I'd be using both pickups combined. Good luck !
6. To be honest I haven't been able to gig them at volume yet, just at band rehearsals and at church, so haven't had the best chance to assess them yet. What is absolutely clear is that they are utterly incredible for any dirty tones. I bought an RH450 a couple of weeks ago, and on weds played one through a TC RS210 in a shop trying out some basses and the clean tones were really, really good. Much "sparklier" than with the Baers (no real surprise there). I've actually ordered an RS210 of my own, which will arrive tomorrow to try and assess with whole of the rest of my rig. There's a lot of hearsay evidence that the TC amps do work particularly well with the RS cabs. I do also feel it is almost my duty to try out a BF Super 12T, as I have heard so much about them. I have a suspicion that the Baers might not quite have the versatility that I would ideally want. What they do, which is rock, ideally with some drive and dirt, they do utterly incredibly. But I need to decide I think, whether I am willing to sacrifice that "sparkle" up top with cleaner tones. Just wanting to know my options really.
7.
Pm me if you decide to sell them
Will do Ian, Are you missing them ?
8. bump with small price drop
9.
Adjustable with an allen key.
Correct the polepieces all have an allen key end on them. @Geek99, the polepieces are not recessed, it's just that I didn't have the covers pushed properly down on the pickups for the photos. @Mr.Foxen, This pickup is significantly warmer than a model P. Much more going on in the lower mids, rather than the more upper mid bite of the model P. Giving what I have described as a "woody" tone. Obviously that word is utterly subjective but it seems to bring out the natural sound of the wood in the bass, rather than over-ride it with it's own tone. Suprisingly, it also has a slightly higher output than my model P.
10. WIth good headphones I can tell the difference relatively easily, and I don't have particularly special ears. I suspect the decent headphones makes the difference. The USA basses in the vid have a lot more character going on in the upper mids and treble, with the associated more bite that comes with it.
11. Hi all, I have a pair of Baer ML112 cabs and would be very interested in meeting up with someone reasonably near to me with a Barefaced Super 12 T. I could try your cab, you could try mine, with our own amps of course. Just feel I should try out a S12T at some point. I'm near Southampton. Anyone interested. I'd be prepared to drive up to, say, 40 miles to yours.
12.
Excuse my ignorance but what do the various wires do ?
Standard precision wiring. Each separate pickup has a "hot" and a "ground" wire. The hot wire from one pickup is connected to the ground wire from the other, thus wiring them in series. That leaves you one hot wire and one ground wire to connect to your wiring loom in your bass. Simples !
13.
Oh, sorry, pardon me for daring to express an opinion.
I suspect that Sean's tongue was well and truly stuffed deep into his cheek for his comment.
14. Now on ebay as an auction, 99p no reserve, so no longer available as a "buy it now". http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=181131284089 For sale this great 1970's vintage Dimarzio P pickup. labelled "patent applied for" on the rear. This gives a great, woody, warm precision tone. Surprisingly strong output from them too. This came in a bass I bought but I have changed it to a Dimarzio model P as I'm looking for a more cutting, punchy "ceramic pickup" type tone. If you're wanting warm, woody vintage tone, this thing has it in spades. Comes with cream colour covers, although they are not glued on so you can easily put some black ones on if you prefer. Really not too sure on a price, but I'll start at [s]£70[/s], now £65 posted. If no takers at that, I'll edge it down bit by bit over the weeks. 15. now SOLD OK, here is my immaculate four month old G&L tribute SB-2 in metallic gloss black. It has absolutely no marks, scratches or swirls on it AT ALL that I can find, except for one tiny, tiny mark on the end of the headstock. Any marks you see on the pics are only dust. Upgrades are a Seymour Duncan SPB1 vintage precision pickup, which I feel is a better match to the bridge pickup than the original MFD pickup. Also, is a custom ebony thumbrest and a blue pearloid scratchplate (courtesy of our own BassDoc). The original black scratchplate will come as part of the deal also, as will a very nice 20mm foam Stagg gigbag. This bass plays just beautifully. Great tone, lovely action. Every string, including the low E has a real punch. No dead spots on the neck. It has been a wrench to decide to sell it. However, it is just doubling my other P bass for my precision needs currently, and I have a lusting for a Stingray-type bass, which the sale of this will help fund. I have put a lot of effort into getting this bass right, and it's action is lovely and the slim jazz-type neck is very playable. For a rock player this bass is the canine's knackers IMO. The neck pocket is tight as a tight thing. Intonation is perfect. Quality and finish makes current MIM Fenders look shoddy. Weight is medium-light. My, very cheap, bathroom scales put it at 4kg. Certainly not a heavy bass in any sense of the word. £329 posted within the UK, or £315 collected from the Southampton area. I can also send abroad. To the EU it would cost approximately an extra £20, but please contact me for costs. Please check my feedback, as I have sold a fair bit of stuff on here. Sorry, no trades, OK, pics ...... 16. An honest question to the OP .... why limit yourself to just a P ? I can quite understand why you want the P tone, as it is the best, but you could pick up a nice PJ configuration bass for the same money and have extra very useful tones for more versatility for your recording. There are a number of Fender Precision specials/deluxes out there (both MiM and MiA) that are PJ. Also the Yamaha BB series basses, G&L SB-2 tributes etc. I would also say don't discount non-Fenders. In my experience the "precision" sound from something like a Yamaha BB or a G&L SB-2 and, I suspect, a number of other PJ basses out there, is well within the variety of the range of "precision" tones that different Fender precisions will offer. Just a thought.
17. Gorgeous tone. THere's some heavy duty post processing going on with it though, including some serious compression.
18.
Thanks guys, Ill definitely go and check out some Markbass amps. I play mainly Funk, Rock, Jazz and Groove music at University but Im also in an Indie/Alternative band back at home. I played a Gallien Krueger combo once when recording and really liked it so Ill look into them too! I guess an amp that would sound the part for Funk/Groove or Indie/Rock music would make me happy haha. Thanks for the suggestions, much appreciated!
Well GK have their own "sound", and it would seem that you have certainly liked that in the past. So definitely worth checking out the GK MB line of amps, and the GK neo cabs. I would strongly recommend getting the neo range over the MBE cabs. THe neo range cabs are built to a much higher standard. An MB500 into an 8ohm GK neo 2x12 would be a solid and potentially loud rig, with the potential to get even louder if you thought you needed it with a 2nd cab at some point (to make use of the full 500W at 4 ohms). The Markbass stuff is still excellent, but will be inherently rather more mellow in tone than a GK MB/neo rig. One brand is not better, just different.
19. Good news and a result for you ! I'm the opposite, in that I seem to be able to get used to any body shape with ease, but am very fussy about necks.
20. MarkBass Little Mark's are a very good suggestion. As are Genz Benz Shuttles (for a slightly brighter, more "modern" tone). Also, don't discount the Gallien Krueger MB500, for a more upper mids-prominent clean tone also. Cabs - go used if you can. The GK neo range are excellent and very good value. With cabs you'll pay a huge premium for lightness. So, a good, but heavy cab will cost you peanuts. But a quality but very light cab will cost you the Earth. It would be useful to know what type of sounds you were looking for.
21.
There will be as soon as I work out how to upload one
........ lists under interests ......... PHOTOGRAPHY ! Come on ! pics Sharpish !
22.
That 700RB with a 410RBh should be a cracking rig, coupled with your Thunderbird, instant rock-tastic tones.
Agreed ! It's such unanimous BC advice here. The OP is bound to smell a conspiracy !
23. bump with small price drop !
24. +1 for Bass Doc. He's good AND cheap !
25. A "lot of cab for your money" recommendation type bump from me !
