Modifying a Jaguar bass... Good idea??
hamfist replied to Alexthemack's topic in Repairs and Technical
Yes, if you love everything else about the bass then do it. But, for goodness sake, get someone who knows what they are doing to do the dirty work. -
Upgrading a P-bass; but how much is it worth spending?
hamfist replied to Grangur's topic in Repairs and Technical
It has a good body, a firm pocket and a straight neck. The rest is all customisable.
Those are the key things. If it has those, plus no dead spots on the neck and every string has a good, punchy attack, then you have the base for a great bass. You can then simply mix and match hardware to taste. -
.... Hoping to see a rash of Dingwalls and Sadowskies for sale cheap in the classifieds after this thread ! Might pick myself one up for a couple 'a hundred ...... maybe.
this week......................................
Absolutely ! My opinion is definitely only valid for one week. Things change far too quickly in my bass equipment life to commit for any longer than that.

I've owned 3 USA Fenders, two German Warwicks, a Status S2 and numerous other decent quality (and reasonably expensive) basses. Admittedly, these are not top top dollar basses but for most of us I guess we would describe them as high quality, relatively expensive instruments. Anyway, After much chopping and changing and actually listening with my ears rather than with my eyes I have ended up with a main bass (an old Aria Pro II) , which cost me £70 (and I use "as is", unmodded) and a backup (Yamaha RBX270) costing £223 (brand new). Tonally, these instruments are every bit as good as all the more expensive basses I have played and owned. they also both play beautifully, with punch on every string, no dead spots etc. THey don't look "cool" to other musos and they have the "wrong" names on the headstock but I care not. I have found that putting my money into quality amps, cabs and pedals gets me far nearer my tonal objectives than putting it into basses. So, simply an encourangement to all to hunt around and play a lot of cheaper basses, as there are some absolute bargains out there which sound and play stunningly. And yes, I also mean some of the mass-produced Indonesian/Korean basses out there too. Warning ...... there are also many absolutely awful cheap basses out there too. Anyone else found the same ?
Cort made basses with a headstock quite similar to that, although I don't think it is a surprise that Cort could have been the manufacturer given its Korean origins.
You could well be right. Cort have made a huge number of instruments under licence for all sorts of manufacturers. the timeline and country of manufacture would certainly fit.
I had that on my ebay watchlist, ive always wanted a bass with twin p pickups i didnt bid in the end im trying my best to scale down my basses Looks like a bargain though good luck with it are the pickups decent?
I'm the same, twin P pickup basses seem to be like magnets to me. The pickups are actually excellent. I briefly put in a Fender custom shop P pickup I have into the bass yesterday. But took it out as the originals were just as nice to my tastes.

SOLD Used but still in excellent condition. With packaging, foam and screws. Does not come with the copper backing plate, as seen in the pic on this link .... http://www.fender.co...on-bass-pickup/ The copper plate can make it rather awkward to fit in many non-Fender models so it can actually be a hindrance rather than a benefit. This pickup still has no background noise when installed in a shielded bass which, I guess isn't surprising as most P pickups do not have the backing plate. Anyway, price reflects the lack of plate. £43 posted to your door.

The bass arrived today and I have to say I am mightily impressed. For a 15 year old bass it is in superb condition. Finish is metallic sparkle blue, headstock too. It's certainly attractive but not the most carefully applied finish I've ever seen on the rear of the body where you can see some striations. The neck is a treat, action is amply low. Nut width is 40mm and it feels very similar to a Yamaha BB neck to be honest, so pretty much bang inbetween a standard J and P neck. The tuners feel re-assuringly good quality in their action and the nut is cut nicely. The neck position P sounds like a precision, surprise, surprise. I haven't measured but I'd guess it's exactly in the Fender sweet spot. THe bridge p pickup has a Jazz neck pickup on steroids sound, and both together sounds like a rather more solid PJ blended. I like it. It balances nicely and I think it looks sort of cool retro. It's certainly pretty unique. There is so little out there about these basses. Wiring ... it has volume and tone pots (all 500K) for each pickup and a 3 way pickup selectorr toggle. All cavities are paint-shielded. OK here's some decent pics. .... New Bass Day - We will not bow to any sponsors....
hamfist replied to Low End Bee's topic in Bass Guitars
Lovely looking bass. It has serious character ! -
It's just the cab.
That sounds fine then. The cab can handle 300W, so the output from the 100W Roland will be no problem for it. Just check that the Roland amp can handle an 8 ohm load ... edit, just looked at the manual and it can. OK, you are all good to go .... once you have the correct connecting cable - and make sure it is a speaker cable, not an instrument cable as you will fry an instrument cable with speaker cable type currents.
-
Is your Marshall a combo or a cab ? My google search came up with both. Anyway, whichever it is, if you have a power amp output from the Roland Cube and an input to the cab (or cab portion of a combo), then you should be able to power the Marshall with the Roland. Just make sure that the Roland amp can handle an 8 ohm speaker load, it certainly should be able to, but please check first.

There's a lot more online about the guitar M-series than the basses. The guitars seem to be well thought of by everyone who actually has had experience of one. I'm hoping the basses are built up to a similar standard. Time will tell.
-
Just bought a blue one of these, with twin P pickups, from ebay. It has a "made in Korea" sticker on it but apart from that there is no other history. Google only brings up a different M-series that was sold on Talkbass a couple of years ago. Apart from that there is no info at all on these. Does anyone have any experience and info on these at all ?? I'll get pics up later, as I won't receive the bass until later in the week. Edit .... pics now in post #4

TC Electronic RH450 Classic & Barefaced Midget setup
hamfist replied to Talbo's topic in Amps and Cabs
I found the Midget a tad aggressive on mids, so that may well balance nicely with the above account of the RH450.
Th RH has plenty of mids available. It's just the very top end that you won't get. With the knobs flat the RH will start to roll off over about 3KHz I think, but the frequency graphs show that you can get the RH pretty flat up to about 8KHz with some knob twiddling but whatever you do you will get very significant roll-off higher than that -
TC Electronic RH450 Classic & Barefaced Midget setup
hamfist replied to Talbo's topic in Amps and Cabs
Not quite sure of what you are asking. Recommendations for what ? If you're wanting to know how a TC RH450 (or their classic 450) goes with a Midget and a Jazz bass, I have no idea. I will say that the RH450 is a slightly darkish amp, so wouldn't be a great match to a dark cab if you want any sort of sparkle. What I do know is that the RH450 pairs beautifully with TC's own RS cabs. -
Squier VM Jag Special (pj config) V's Squier P Bass Special (pj config)
hamfist replied to Pembo's topic in Bass Guitars
I'd say the BB's sound "rounder", definitely with less growl than a good P bass. So might be right up your street. I guess it's coming down to small details here, and you need to try and compare some. -
Squier VM Jag Special (pj config) V's Squier P Bass Special (pj config)
hamfist replied to Pembo's topic in Bass Guitars
Gone off the Jag idea a bit and looking at a good Squier P or Yam BB, now. Only got about £200 max to play with (holiday next month...!). Currently watching a couple of BB414's on feebay, so hoping i can get a well looked after one for sub £200.
I like the Yammy BB's but the P pickup on them is a bit "gentler" and "rounder" in tone than on a Fender P, and due to the size of them they are next to impossible to replace. So, IMO, the BB will not give you an exact Precision tone, although it is sort of close. On the other hand a Yamaha RBX270 gives a spot on, cracking Precision punch. I have one as my main bass these days, and the J pickup on it is really very good too. The pickup and body wood upgrades over the RBX170 put the 270 in a different league. I have tried more than one very expensive P pickup in the Yam and it is no improvement to my ears on the original. Thoroughly recommended. I think there's a new B-stock one on ebay at £199, although new they are only a bit over £200. Play one and you will be impressed. -
Not only "collection only" the ebay listing finished at a time when a significant majority of people interested in guitars and band music are out, so a very bad time to finish your listing. Ona different but related note, strangely I seem to be having far, far more luck selling bass stuff on Gumtree recently than anywhere else (including here).

Great colour. I'm a complete sucker for a green bass.
