1. Edit: this has been sold now.

This is a hybrid passive four-string P bass.

The body is from a Fender Squier Matt Freeman Precision bass, purchased new in Jan, 2013.

    - contoured basswood body finished in Vintage White
    - HiMass™ bridge with four brass barrel saddles

The neck is from a Fender Modern Player Satin Jazz bass, purchased new in Nov, 2013.

    - maple neck with "C"-shaped profile
    - 9.5"-radius rosewood fingerboard with 20 jumbo frets
    - easy-access truss rod adjustment wheel

The neck join is good but not air-tight (see photo, below).

Currently strung with La Bella 760FL 43-104 flatwounds.

The bass is in very good condition. I have gone over it this evening and the only ding I found is on the body where it meets the neck (see photo, below).

The bathroom scales weight is 3.3kg (7lb 4oz).

    Front:

The bridge and pickup covers were imported from America (due to the HiMass bridge).

    Back:

    Neck pocket + ding:

Included is both the current tort pickguard and the original black one (still with protective plastic):

Included but not pictured: tug bar.

I will include, for free, an old but functional generic shaped case.

Bass is located in Wimbledon. Collection (and try-out) is welcome. Or I could possibly deliver or meet half way, if you are in the south-east -- please PM to discuss. Or I can post within the UK for £10.

    Edit:

The above photos came out slightly too yellow.

I have now learned how to set the white balance on my camera. The actual colour is closer to this:

  2. 27th Jan: This has now been sold

    Updated price: £250

For sale only - no trades.

The BB425X is a passive five-string PJ bass.

The two control pots are master volume and tone.

There is a three-position switch to choose which pickup: neck, both, or bridge.

You can string either through the body or through the bridge. Currently strung through the bridge with Rotosound Swing Bass 45-130 roundwounds.

This bass was purchased new in March, 2013. It is in very good condition: see photos, below.

The bathroom scales weight is 4.7kg (10lb 6oz).

Small tiny marks on the bottom edge:

N.B. It might look like a scratch on the pickguard, just under where the neck starts -- but it's just a rug hair:

Tiny dinglets on back of neck:

No case included, sorry. But I have the original boxes.

Bass is located in Wimbledon. Collection (and try-out) is welcome. Or I could possibly deliver or meet half way, if you are in the south-east -- please PM to discuss. Or I can post within the UK for £10.

  3. I think "Blue Rondo à la Turk" does have a quaver conversion, although it's unrelated to the 2+2+2+3 grouping of 9/8. When moving from the head (9/8) to the solos (4/4), you switch with 3 quavers = 1 crotchet. It's about 1m50s into it:

Another example of a conversion is "Killing in the Name": from the intro to the verse, about 40 seconds in, it converts with 2 triplet crotchets = 1 crotchet. (I don't know how you'd formally notate that...)

As a contrast, here is an example of a "non-conversion" (i.e. "quaver = quaver"):

The composition is mainly in 6/8, although the third bar is in 3/4 and the fourth and fifth are in 4/4. All quavers are the same length as each other -- but I'd argue it's a lot harder to tap your foot along to the Metheny transition than the RATM transition!

Another, different example I can think of is:

Technically, you have "crotchet = minim" at 1m14s and again at 2m44s -- where each time, the chord progression goes round twice as fast as before. Then the reverse at 3m22s and 4m22s.

I will keep you in mind mate, not wanting to split at the minute, l will wait and see if anyone wants it first.

    Cheers

    I sent you a PM.
I'm interested in the body if you decide to part it.

    Has anyone tried one of these;
    http://www.thomann.d...bass_bundle.htm
It looks like it's been "inspired" by the DPA 4099 mic, but is obviously much cheaper.
I was curious and bought a "t.bone Ovid" mic (£37) after reading about them in this thread, but have only just got round to trying it out in the field (at a jazz gig in a church).

I used the mic just to record the bass, not to amplify it at the gig itself. (I was using a pickup/amp for sound reinforcement.)

Bad - It seems to crackle on some notes, although perhaps it will not be audible in the final mix.

Good - With a drum kit about a metre to my left, and an open grand piano about a metre to my right, I thought the mic would just pick up everything. However, to my surprise, it is picking up the bass quite strongly.

Here is the isolated recording from the mic. It was mounted in front of the (g string) f-hole, pointing towards the bridge.

I have increased the volume of the recording, but it's otherwise unedited/unprocessed.

Please ask for other details or specific photos.

  7. I received my end pin about a week after ordering it, which is quick for a bespoke item.

I play a hybrid bass, and only pizz, and I ordered an oak end pin. To my ears, there is an improved clarity in the attack... the start of each note has more definition.

When (if!) I have some time, I would like to record myself as an A/B test, to hear from 'out front' what the difference to tone/sound is.

As others have mentioned, it is a nice side benefit to have a fixed-length end pin instead of the usual adjustable one.

I'm happy that I bought this end pin from Ben.

    Jazz neck:

Mighty Mite, licensed by Fender, 60's Vintage Maple, part #MM2909vt.

Tiny mark near the 12th fret:

    Tiny scratch on the underside:

One screw hole for the 'G' tuner is too large, so the screw is too loose. I just used three screws without a problem; perhaps it is possible to fill it in and redrill?

  9. (Edit 3rd June: now on hold pending sale)

    For sale (no trades, thanks)

    Epiphone Zenith fretless: £400.

I bought this new in October 2012 and it's a great bass -- but I hardly use it now, as I'm playing P bass or upright 95% of the time.

It gets a lot of attention at gigs! People always notice and ask about it.

    Flaws:

    - I'm afraid I lost the truss rod cover:
    http://i.imgur.com/Mo2fjgB.jpg

    - The markings on the pots are slightly worn away.
    http://i.imgur.com/HGqsfsN.jpg

    - There are a couple of very small dings on the side of the fingerboard.

    - There are two stacked pots. The bottom half of each turns smoothly. But when you turn the top half, the bottom half sort of 'sticks' to it. Not sure I explained that very well, so here's a video:
    https://www.youtube....h?v=OdLeaPpNC8g

Asking price includes a gig bag -- this one:
    http://www.thomann.d...bst_classic.htm

I'd rather not send this in the post. I'm based near Wimbledon, London, and I have an amp here if you want to try the bass out. Or, I could deliver to you, or meet up half-way. I gig regularly around the south-east, so PM with your location and we'll figure something out.
