The E seems very loose which is causing it to be flappy, so it clacks against the pickup when I play, producing a pop which is really frustrating.
This doesn't address your problem directly, but in the meantime you could try putting electrical/masking tape over the pickup. This might stop the pop noise.

To answer some questions received here and by PM:

No amp or cab was used for the recording; the bass was plugged directly into a Zoom R24 recorder.

I bought the bass second-hand less than a year ago. It has hardly been played at all in this time -- just the occasional noodle at home -- which is the reason for sale. (My dreams of being the next Gary Willis have been put on hold...)

Regarding roundwound marks: the fingerboard is fine. I would say there is very light string marking. I took a couple more close-up photos (link below).

There is some pickup hum. I've uploaded some isolated bass tracks of the start of each take, before I began playing. Turn the volume up and hear for yourself:

  3. I was asked for some sound samples, so here is my best Will Lee impression...

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7Iam5TnTKE

Recorded direct, tone up full, with no effects or post-processing.

The recordings start off mixed, so you can hear the bass in context. Then I gradually fade David Bowie out, to isolate the bass.

Does it have decent acoustic volume and resonance?
No, not really. It's definitely louder than an solid-body bass. You could practise around the house unplugged - but that's about it. You couldn't jam acoustically with other instruments. Also, the acoustic tone has no depth - not very bass-y.

(Just to clarify - in a previous post when I said "at home it seems to have a nice, deep tone" that was with a pre-amp and headphones.)

  5.
Which model is it, and how do you find the finish?
The model is AFBV200A.

I think they've done a good job on the finish. They have not gone over-the-top, and the overall impression from a couple of feet away, or more, is it looks great!

If you spent some time examining it really closely, you would probably know it's not actually an old, battle-scarred, vintage instrument.

  6. I picked one up a couple of weeks ago.

First time I've owned a short-scale bass, or a hollow-body. The overall length of the whole instrument is the same as a normal 34" bass, but the scale is shorter since the bridge is some way into the body.

Switched the strings to D'Addario Chromes. By the way, despite the 30.3" scale, it takes normal 34" strings due to the distance between bridge and tailpiece.

    Doesn't weigh much: 3.0 kg.

Haven't played it out yet (first chance to is over the next few days), but so far at home it seems to have a nice, deep tone but while still remaining tight - not boomy.

  7. This is a Yamaha BB404F fretless bass in a natural finish.

It is a "Nathan East silhouette", passive, jazz-style bass.

No trades at the moment, thanks.

Digital bathroom scales weight: 3.2 kg ( 7.1 lbs).

Functionally, the electronics, truss rod, bridge, and tuners all work perfectly.

Strings are roundwounds (unsure of exact brand).

The knobs are not the original ones.

    Overall cosmetic condition is ok/good:

    - headstock: a few, very tiny dings.
    - neck: good, feels like a Jazz; a few small scratches on the bottom side (cannot be felt when playing)
    - front of body: overall ok; some light scratches viewable only on close inspection; slightly untidy around the pick-ups.
    - side/back of body: many light-medium scratches

    £340 posted

Trades: perhaps a four-string Precision bass or a VT Bass pedal.

I bought this in early November from Thomann for £398:

  11. I play a lot of Motown/soul. In the past, I have used a Precision and a Yamaha BB -- they are both great basses and you can't go wrong with either. However, I've been using a 2EQ StingRay for the last year and really enjoying it for live work.

I would say that, whatever bass you choose, the key to the Motown vibe is flatwounds strings, a foam mute, and plucking near the end of the neck (rather than towards the bridge).

I've found that the advantages of the StingRay are that it responds better under my fingers, cuts through on stage better (10-piece band) without being too forward in the mix, and it is sunburst. My Precision is not sunburst.

Having said that, I have a recording session coming up for which I'll use the Precision.

Here is a back-to-back comparison, if anyone is interested:
    https://www.youtube....h?v=dVf_5-Y9l94

  12. I also double 50/50.

For a while, I had a Streamliner 600 + Barefaced Compact which was pretty nice, although the treble control didn't seem to make much difference. I felt there was slight room for improvement in terms of the definition of the notes.

Current rig is a Shuttle 9.2 + Big Baby 2 and couldn't be happier with the tone (and volume) capabilities. All the amp controls make a noticeable and pleasant difference although I generally run it flat.

Unfortunately (for the purposes of this thread) I changed head and cab at exactly the same time, so hard to say which component was most reponsible for the improvement.

Also, I always use an Auralex Gramma pad which helps tighten the sound on boomy stages.

Selling t.bone Ovid CC 100 mic, plus the clip and case.

Comes with mini XLR and full-size XLR adaptor.

This is a condenser mic which needs a phantom power supply.

I had good results with mic, but unfortunately the 10-piece band I currently do most of my gigs with is way too loud for any microphone.

Clips on to the strings below the bridge. Gooseneck allows positioning of the mic.
