If you think 5 string and fretless open up possibilities, upright(EUB or acoustic) will take you into yet another whole world.I am a completely different bass player than I was a few years ago when I fell under the spell of uprights. Not for everyone but a great challenge and another way of seeing bass music. Isn't it wonderful to have all these choices!

I ventured into the world of upright bass about 2 years ago after wanting one for ages but unfortunately I bought one from gear4music for about £650 a lot of money for me but it turned out a big mistake, supposedly solid spruce top, back and sides it duely arrived a Beautiful sight I was over the moon....but quickly realised the adjustable bridge was as low as it could be (so know way of adjusting) the action was so high it was impossible to play apart from about the first 4 frets even then it required a lot of effort....I asked on here for help advice but was told the gear4music uprights are nothing more than ornements, I would one day like maybe to get another one even a plywood one as long as its playable and comfortable to play, shame, but I would advise anyone not to buy from gear4music and shop around.

I did all my rock listening in the late 60s/early 70s and after reading the hyperbole soo wanted to like this bunch.  But I don't.  They simply aren't very good.  Style over substance.  They must have spent weeks in front of the mirror, trying to get the pose and clothes right but they don't have the spark or energy.  The tunes are lack-lustre, the playing less than mediocre.  Yes he sounds a bit like Plant but, to me he sounds more like 'Little Eva' - maybe they should consider a cover of 'The Locomotion'.  Singer has a few scripted poses but otherwise has the presence of a shop dummy.

Before heaping praise on these poorly manufactured imposters folks should watch footage of any of the rock greats from the late 60s early 70s - Led Zep, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and there is just no comparison - they were even younger than this bunch when they started but they could PLAY - with energy and excitement.  That ain't rose tinted glasses, it is having ears and a soul.

Seems to me the fuss made about this lot has less to do with what they are like as a band but more about the state of modern rock music and the dearth of talent. 'In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king'.

    IMO etc, obvs. :)

Very well said I have been lucky enough to see most of the great 70s Rock Bands and these just don't come close

  3. I remember many moons ago I was gigging with a  beat up old 90w Carlsboro Combo and an old Encore P Bass which was surprisingly nice to play cost me £100 for both amp and bass....a good friend and fellow bassist was gigging with his band with a £1000 Ampeg stack and a Musicman Bass of about a grand and he would often compliment me on my sound and say he had all this expensive gear and mine was cheapo budget second hand crap but sounded better than him lol.....I would say its all in the fingers....feel is everything.

  4. I have dabbled learning them but in all honesty don't understand them, the more I try to delve into the theory side of music the more daunting it gets! Watched countless youtube vids ect some contradict one another saying you need to learn this that and the other all over the neck, others say you only need to learn this blah, blah all very confusing at times, there are some great and helpful sights ect which make it understandable but for the average pub player wanting to improve some go way over the head...at the end of the day if your playing covers down your local to a whizzed up rowdy audience who couldn't give a toss about what your playing. I think if your wanting to play solos maybe there useful but I doubt they are any use to the average Joe, I would love to improve but just not good or bright enough to make it all click unfortunately.

  6. Hi Hugh...big blues fan myself, I have just subscribed to your channel so hopefully I will find some useful tips on blues bass...unfortunately the two I have watched are a bit to simple, but I can imagine they will be useful for a complete beginner, all the best Bob.

The shape of the bass can have a huge impact on how the body balances when you're wearing it on a strap. If the bass is poorly balanced such that the neck is always trying to dive towards the floor (Gibsons seem to be particularly prone to this) then you're constantly having to support it with your left hand.

The design of the bass also ideally needs to be comfortable against your body, both when you're standing up with it on a strap, and when you're sitting down with it rested on your knee.

    S.P.

Good points.....me personally like P and J Basses with contoured body for comfort.

Hi all, I recently got hold of a Vox Standard bass (early 80's Japanese thing with a single DiMarzio P-bass style pickup right next to the bridge) and it sounds fantastic, surprisingly JayDee-like with the right effects added, the pickup just seems to work really well in that position.

It's got me thinking, I'm sure I've seen a few over the years, but does anyone know of any basses with 2x p-bass pickups(think jazz bass configuration, but with two p-style split pickups instead of jazz-style ones)?

I think Fender might have done a blacktop-series bass along these lines fairly recently, plus some early BC Rich Mockingbird style-stuff and possibly certain models of Westone Thunder might have had this, and of course tonnes of people have modded basses along these lines... really though I'm after basses that would have had this config from the factory- if anyone can recall anything it'd be much appreciated! Cheers!

Revelation do a Bass with double P type p/up and don't be put off by cheap price they are decent basses well put together and very playable....all come fitted with Alan Entwhistle p/ups....google there website.

  9. I spent 5 years in an original Rock/Metal band as Vocalist from 81 to 86 we died on our derrières in out of town venues but pulled good crowds locally and had the pleasure of supporting Magnum, Terrorplane….(2 members from Thunder), Spider, Crome Molly. We quickly added covers to our set as you will soon learn the average pub venue doesn't want originals. I eventually packed in when the band split after several failed attempts at putting another band together....but got the bug again in 99 and gigged regularly in local cover bands as either vocalist or bassist till 2015 but working permanent nights haven't done nothing since. My advice would be learn some covers or join a covers band aswell...good luck and have fun.
