After my wife died I gave up music. Then 2 years ago I started playing with some mates from school. Old blokes are us!  It was going knowhere so I replied to an ad on joinmyband doing covers. Got the gig.  Now 6 rehearsals later we are doing a gig! My first in 30 years!  I am 61. So... Just keep trying... My love for bass is rekindled. It has only taken me 50 year's to get the best bass sound I have ever had. Thanks markbass and Cort. And the bass soul food pedal. And thank you to this forum/site for being an inspiration!

Nice one mate, best wishes for the future

Once again, I feel I must congratulate you for your great taste in music.

I saw them live just the other week at The Hideaway in Streatham and they blew the roof off. FANTASTIC venue for live music btw.

First heard them on the Positivity album 25 yrs ago and Randy Hope Taylor is still my favourite out of their bassists. While his playing isn't as insane as the dude off the 100 degrees album, his feel and tone were off the scale.

Spot on RHT has a great feel and his basslines are always tasteful.

Well I've been pondering for a while now ,no proper band and only jamming now and then ,me and my musical journey on bass  have finally come to a end .its a sad day indeed ,the band scene is not great around here either no more  , so I'm gonna concentrate on my first love which is acoustic guitar ,take care everyone , over and out 👍

Was thinking of doing this but keep thinking something might crop up but doesn't lol....been out of a band 4 years now and was seriously considering the solo acoustic route...but all open mic nights are during the week and I work nights so no chance there....but enjoyed many years of gigging in the past and I don't let it bother me now...I just plug away on both guitar and bass...best of luck with the new venture.

Depends on the band.  Some are still playing the old "classic pub rock" Alright Now, Freebird, - dare I say Brown Eyed Girl.  A lot of band these days are covering 90s type indie Some Might Say, Dakota, Chelsea Dagger and erm Sex on effing Fire. If youy are depping for pub gigs I guess the setlist will be very different from a wedding band.  I've PM'd you with a typical setlist from my last band.

Hi Nicko thanks for your pm I have replied I don't think I am going to bother....hence trying to remove original thread but thankyou again

Hard to believe that music was once a profession. It really depends on where you live, often. In Ontario, Canada, gigs are rare and you're lucky to get some money for gas. Usually you'll play for free. But when I lived on the West Coast on Vancouver Island, the place was hopping mad with live music on Thurs-Sat. All types, but mostly danceable music from Rock to Country. Lots of jazz, too. But those people back there and then in the 70's were very sociable and went out a lot. So much has changed. Anyway, hope you're still playing with a band. That's always good. Even if you play somewhere for free, it's ok. Like a hobby. That's the way I'm trying to go. Good luck to you!

Unfortunately my job doesn't allow me these days to rehearse during the week as I go to bed early evening then up at silly 0 clock so haven't gigged for about 4 years now.

  6. On and off since the early 80s played 100s of gigs some good some bad but never been ashamed of any or cannot think of any off hand...I was one of those guys who would play anywhere a gigs a gig to me...back in the 80s and 90s you could easily play 2 to 3 times a week more if you wanted but I was always working full time...so music was my hobby but often gigged either thurs, fri, sat nights or fri, sat night sun afternoon sometimes night aswell….gigs were a plenty. But its hard to find gigs nowadays....played all over certain parts of country aswell loved it at the time but aint gigged for a few years now.

    thankyou all for the comments,

    so let me explain further,

no he is not the band leader or even the longest member,

but he does like to analize the smallest detail,

we are a pub covers band,

a few weeks ago he put forward a song to add to the set list, afier a discussion with the band

we all said it would not go with what we do although we all liked the song it is just not us,

    he spat the dummy out

so this week we started rehearsing a suggestion from the drummer,it was all going ok until he started explaining the

chord sequence in the middle eight which we had all played through a couple of times and all was well,

until he said I think you should continue that line for the solo,

when I said hold on the keyboard player was trying to explain something to us all,he flipped big time

to which I said there is no solo in this song and I thought we all agreed to play this as is because its so popular,

yeh yeh but there is space for a solo,

oh and I don't think we need that chorus on,

but he did not realize the threshold was turned off it was only showing the red light but the effect was off,

I knew he would say some thing if he thought it was on,the placebo effect and it worked,

so when we finished the rehearsal I was feeling angry, fustrated and getting ready for a argument

but I left and stewed for a couple of days,

I have had no contact with anyone,so will go to the rehearsal on wed and see what decision I will make.

dependant on the result of a chat,

Pity you cant find a new Guitarist....my last band our Drummer was a pain in the butt type....he had so called perfect pitch so the slightest thing he would pick up on....you didn't play that right....you are slightly out....you cant sing this that or the other type....wouldn't play tunes in dropped D tuning ect, didn't like playing songs a semi-tone down to accommodate vocalist....slagged every other local band off if we were out socialising....many times he was close to been slapped lol.

Good shout. The lead guitar sound and guitar solo on that track probably go down as my favourite of all time.

Good man seen them back in late 70s early 80s when the NWOBHM scene hit the stage...was lucky enough to see some of the great bands when they were just starting out....Pete Way and the early UFO stuff springs to mind also especially the Bass on the track Love to Love from Strangers in the night...good times
