Hi All, Just changed the hardware on my Les Evans custom from chrome to gold and now have a set of the best tuning keys in the world for sale. They look like this: http://www.allparts.uk.com/zoomImage.php?products_id=3821 2 bass side and 2 treble side. Looking for £35 the set to include delivery. I use the post from work and am not back in until next Thursday because of the Easter break, so wouldn't be able to get them out until then. That aside - come on, upgrade your favourite toy to 'Aston Martin' spec. I can pretty much guarantee that these will actually also make you more attractive to the opposite sex too... Pip pip! Mark

Importing hardware from the States
Bass Culture replied to Bass Culture's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for all your replies. I think what it all boils down to is this: it's a lottery! The cost of the items and delivery is (about) £66.00. If I get hit with only some or none of the possible charges I could potentially make a substantial saving. If I get hit with all of them it's likely the saving will amount to pence, with the added difficulty of returning them if there's a problem. Additional problem is - it seems to me from what's been said here - you can't predict exactly how much and how many of these potential charges are going to be levied. Seems like it's a case of 'You pays your money, you take your chance'. Hhhmmm. Thanks all, Mark -
Importing hardware from the States
I've had about six small packages of the size we're talking about here come from the States in the last year. I've not been charged VAT etc. for any of them.
Has the carrier hit you with this 'custom clearance fee' though? -
Importing hardware from the States
Bass Culture replied to Bass Culture's topic in General Discussion
Okay, folks, thanks for all this. So, I think what I understand is that, if the items I'm after come to about £66.00 (they do - including delivery), they should then attract a 3.9% import duty and 17.5% VAT. But, so I understand from the thread that Hamster posted the link to, I might also be hit with a charge of between £13.00 - £20.00 (depending upon carrier) 'custom clearance fee'. It's this last fee that would mean the items are no cheaper to import than buy here but, if I understand correctly, your experiences are that any or all of these fees may not be charged? But that it's completely arbitrary whether they are or not? Is that about right? Cheers, Mark -
Dear All, Apologies in advance if this has been raised and answered elsewhere but if I'm looking to source some small items - specifically a set of 4 new tuning keys - from the States, would I still have to pay the customs clearance charge? I can get my head around the import duty and VAT but if there's an additional £13.00 - £20.00 to pay as well that begins to make a really good price look like a very average one instead. Anyone any experience of a similar purchase? Thanks, Mark

The finish on the TRB for the money is just brilliant. It looks like a boutique bass and the sound is awesome. If it wasn't for the fact that I'm a little more comfortable with basses that are on the small side of 'normal' it really wouldn't be going anywhere. And you're right about the SR too. In terms of value for money the 900 is probably a better buy than the 1000. I don't really understand why they've discontinued it - or appear to have. Except maybe the curved body was not cost effective to produce on what is essentially a mid price bass. Very very comfortable to play though - especially for someone of my size.

Ibanez SR900 in translucent black. I bought this off ebay about six months ago but I'm playing my Les Evans fretless pretty much exclusively. I believe these have recently been discontinued or superceded by a different model, the SR 700, which doesn't have the curved body. Anyway - Bartolini pickups, 3-band EQ and neck-through construction give this a really full sound. The smaller, curved body make this very comfortable to play. This comes with a nice Stagg gig bag. I gigged with it once but the previous owner has and I would describe it as being in very good condition. There's some very slight dings on it but nothing that will photograph and nothing you'd really notice without looking hard. It's a really nice bass. I'd looking for £300 + P&P for this, which is what I paid for it. Any interested parties are very welcome to try the bass out if they can come to Chester to do so and I am happy to deliver up to a reasonable distance or meet halfway for petrol money only. I can take Paypal but buyer pays the fees I'm afraid. Thanks, Mark

Hi Paul, Can I ask whether the pickups are single coil or humbuckers please? And could you tell me a bit more about exactly what the control layout is too? Many thanks, Mark
All, Price Lowered to £500, I'd prefer collection (Hereford) but I can deliver within a reasonable distance as long as you don't mind contributing towards petrol costs.
Now offered at the remarkably low price of £650....
Are you open to any trade & cash offers? I love this bass. I want it. But can I afford it - one guess! However, I do have a rather lovely Yamaha TRB 1004 which I bought as a back up for my main (fretless) bass and which has since overtaken it as gig bass of choice. But I love Sterlings. I really love them. And black one's are the bass of the Gods... Mark -
I bought one about 3 months back for a Yamaha TRB 1004 I'd picked up. I'd say it was a pretty decent case for the money . The interior velvet is red and there's a nice leather trim on the top and bottom edges. I'm certainly happy enough with mine but I would add the proviso that we only gig once every month or so so it doesn't really have a hard life on the road. Don't know if that helps or not? Pip pip! Rotosound PSD 99 - what is a piano string design string?
Bass Culture replied to markdavid's topic in Accessories and Misc
I used to use them on my fretless quite a few years ago and loved them. I've recently discovered that La Bella do a similar range but (I think) they have a greater choice of gauges. I believe John Paul Jones used to use them but I could be wrong (hell, enough of this modesty - of course I couldn't be wrong!). Mark -
My covers band, Sanchez, are playing in the S.U. at NEWI (North East Wales Institute) if anyone in the Wrexham area is looking for something to do this evening. Cheap beer and free entry - hubbah, hubbah. And you probably won't have to look at me - I think I'll end sandwiched in a 1 foot square space behind our singer and rhythm guitarist!

Much appreciated, Eude. Cheers, Mark

Eude, I'd really appreciate that. I was going to hang fire for a week or two anyway as I'll be down in Colchester in a few days time and was going to pop into The Bass Merchant to maybe try one of the GK combos. But, for me, the Fender seems to have an even more suitable spec. Definitely be interested to hear how you get on with yours. Especially seeing as I've read some stuff about the smaller GK combos which seems to point towards reliability issues. That said, I'm all too aware that the net is sometimes the biggest source of misinformation as well useful information, so that may be something and nothing. Thanks, Mark
