1.
anyone got an opinion on HARLEY BENTON cabs, in particular the 2x10 cheers mark
for the money, yes but i've got a feeling you may want to invest a little bit more and get something that isn't as budget.
  2.
Oranges are hand made in England but never cost more than 2k. These must be amazing!!!
their custom shop is hand made, the normal stuff will be hand wired at best. Much in the same way marshall stuff is.
  3.
And a big budget at that - he charges £3.5K for one of those bass heads + 4x10.
for 3 and a half grand i'll do you a 500watt bass head with 2 properly tuned 2 be 12s and shine your shoes
  4.
They do look to be beautifully made though & he seems like a very cool guy...
yeah i do agree with that, and he's got an obvious eye for quality. My main gripe with doing that though is that it all comes down to marketing hype and the bassman circuit while sounding good isn't the most flexible or well designed of circuits it's essentially the best they could do on a budget.
  5. sounds like a preamp valve has gone, try turning it off and on again to see if it cuures it. If it does tap them all while its on to see which one goes into oscillation
  6. ahh another dude doing boutique versions of the bassman circuit
  7.
So what's the specs going to be then? From the size (and type) of output tranny on the 200 I assume you're going for an ultra-clean output stage rather than a crunchy one.
spec on 200watt tranny is actually 250watts flat 50Hz to 15kHz not sure where the -3db points are will find out after testing, frequency range is a little overkill anyway. The output stage will be in tetrode connection which doesn't run the valves as hard as UL but produces a lil more distortion and power. This amp will do crunchy when you crank it, but it'll still do hifi if you keep the gain down. Big iron and a solid power supply are big factors in a good sounding valve amp for bass IMO
  8. think he meant what type brand etc. also intrested in knowing
  9.
Pots have no inductance or capacitance only resistance, so no impedance, but you knew that didn't you.
sorry my minds a bit frazzled today been working out tone stacks, so i keep thinking of everything in terms of impedance it presents
  10.
Well its summer holidays and i have alot of spare time and a bit of cash to spend. My rig at the moment is a trace v-type combo and i love the punch it gives out but i can't help but miss a bit of the clarity that my previous 10s gave out. I'm thinking of making myself a sort of bright box but not so extreme, something with a few 6"s or 8"s that can still do the full range but will just give me that little extra bite and help me cut through more. I'd design the cab to fit nicely under the combo and be nice and transportable. It has to be 8ohms so i'm looking at a couple of 16 or 4 ohms or 4 x 8ohms, i think three drivers would be better, but that would mess up my impedences. are there any recommendations regarding speaker types or configurations? or any other advice? I'm pretty handy with a jigsaw so the actual build won't be a problem. cheers.
could do similar to original one but use 18sound 6nd410 drivers, i'd recomend using just two or one and a tweeter and high passing it. It'll certainly add some bite to your sound! Also would recomend not putting it underneath your combo and also arrange the speaker vertically.
  11. i use a muff, although mine is heavily modded with flat tone stack, a clean blend and a few other things to help it cut through
  12.
Hi all, Have a beautiful mexican 60's re-issue Jazz which I love. My only dissapointment is the pots. Could anyone advise me on the best replacement pots to get, seems like CTS is the standard and linear for volume and audio for tone. Any advice would be much appreciated, also, would changing the pots change the tone which I don't want to do. Cheers. Ossie
whats wrong with the pots? Bad taper? Changing pots wont effect the tone unless you go for higher or lower impedence
  13. yeah on full, if you can get lots of old peavey or sunn stuff you'll be well set
  14. sludge sound = lots of amps and cabs

    Stoner fuzz

guitarist does all the bass on the albums, i'd recomend trying out a older rat or tube screamer for that kinda sound
  16. Well as some of you may know i've been planning to start up a thing building valve amps for some time now and i've finally got the chassis and transformers done for the 100 and 200 watt amps, although the 200w output transformer turned out alot bigger that i thought it'd would so chassis layout is going to have to be redone. Also final versions of chassis's will be powder coated the one in the pictures is bare at the minute Heres some pictures so far, output trasformer is on the right it's a little overkill but should do the job very nicely heres some pictures of the 100watt transformers and heres all of them with a pint glass for scale reference more pics of progress to follow!
  17.
Just cos you're on the other side of the world you think you can talk tough to me and get away with it ... Seriously, Steve, in any London pub do you really think a vintage valve combo (with the volume set to '1') is actually going to sound better than a rig that's been purposely selected for playing London pubs? I should mention that I put this rig together to replace all the vintage valve gear that I used to use! I had WEM and Selmer and Dynacord and ... Even if I was a guitarist. I'd struggle to justify taking a vintage valve 2x12 combo to a pub gig. My slide guitarist does exactly that, and has done for the last 15 months. Even he's beginning to think he's taken a wrong turning.
No offense but burman stuff really is in a different league to the stuff you listed, i'd personally take it over your rig any day of the week if i was going for a cranked tone i mean if you can't crank the burman theres not gonna be a chance in hell you'll be able to play your orange and midget combo loud. Also you need to start playing some proper venues if people complain when you play above 1!

    Orange AD200B

most companys use rebranded sovtek or chinese valves, while these work there are better valves out there.
  19.
Boo! Matamp.
+1 theres plenty of boutique stuff out there thats gonna be alot more bang for your buck than orange or ampeg. Ask matamp about a 400watter.

    DIY Effects

always a good idea it'll protect your other pedals aswell! always a good idea to stick loads of filtering in to if you can fit it since that effects the other pedals aswell, and more is more which is more which is better.
  21. out of your list i'd go for the bass terror

  23.
Yay! A topic I can talk about! (I've been lurking for ages). Not strictly doom, but definitely trancendental - I've been playing the new Zoroaster album a lot recently - it sounds a lot like this:
woah they've changed always loved their first ep. suprised no one has mentioned the wizard or sabbath yet!
  24.
So i've just joined here, looking some threads and so forth and I would like to see what you lot make of this. My band has made a conscious effort to become a much deeper/heavier entity, we currently have 2 guitarists 1 who plays a 7-string and 1 who plays an 8-string. Both enjoy playing very low. We also have a keys/synth/noise chap who has a hard-on for bass and sub-bass freq's (not an issue in itself ) Which has kinda, without me thinking about it much, moved me higher up the register and I find myself playing alot more melody or "lead" style lines. I've always been a low-down in the pocket style of player so it's a fun challenge and something different but I wonder if anyone else has experience of playing in a band where everyone seems to want a piece of the low end?` Terry
in this situation get a tube screameresque pedal and boost your mid range you'll cut through the mud like a chain saw through butter and add alot more definition to the mix. it's alot easier to cut through in the mids rather than try and go lower unless you have alot of money and good transport
  25.
Hi guys - I posted this in the wrong section originally sorry... TWICE now!! I've been cleaning out some gear from my dad's shed and come across a Marshall JCM 800 bass series head. It's a 100w Mk2. The model number is 1992 - but the serial number S29127 which means it's circa 1984 (is this right)... so i guess it's pretty rare. It's in pretty good condition - I've plugged it in and it all works, the volume pot could probably do with a bit of a clean as it's a little crackly when turning up or down (it's not been used for a good few years) but apart from that that it sounds great. I'm trading in some equipment so would anyone have any idea what this could be worth? Cheers, Andy
not 100% sure on price but if you send me a list of the other stuff your selling i could be intrested in this.
