1. If I buy anything like an amp as 'pre-owned' it gets to see my amptech before I even think about using it.
I've just had as call about an amp I bought recently that
'might need the output valve sockets cleaning, 'cos it's been standing empty, y'know dust 'n' that'.......
Even as I type, tech is replacing the whole set of output bases, one of which has evidence of flash-over.....he'll check the caps as well as electrical safety while he's in there....live long & be happy....

2. Barefaced Generation3 pdf extract:

5b. Woofer break-in
The 12XN550 drivers have extremely high power handling and maximum excursion. This
requires very tough suspension to support the cone and consequently this suspension is
tight when the woofers are brand new. As the woofer is used the suspension loosens up,
resulting in significantly increased bass response (both depth and fatness) and the
speaker becoming easier for an amplifier to drive, as well as the mids and treble becoming
cleaner and smoother as the ability of the surround to damp the cone vibrations improves.
This change occurs in a reverse exponential manner, so the change is most rapid early on,
particularly in the first five minutes of loud use.
It may take a number of gigs or loud rehearsals for your cab to settle into its long-term
parameters (and thus tone and performance). The midrange and treble response will also
improve as the softer suspension allows the cone to move as designed, both in its pistonic
behaviour and the multiple bending modes, giving uniquely even power response for such
a large high excursion driver. Note that we test every cab before it leaves the factory, and
part of that process is a frequency sweep from 100Hz down to 20Hz and back up again, at
fairly high level - this brief test alone does about half the breaking in, so you will never hear
the full break-in change with one of our cabs.

3. I've 'dared' suppliers to put stuff about pricing in writing - it ain't happening - it wasn't in 2002 and it certainly won't now......when (not if) I leave this shop, I'm never going near consumer retail again, trust me...............

:)

4. I think Bill F (as always) has this one nailed - you should really be considering something that's easier to carry - hows about a Barefaced cab & a lightweight amp? (I've got a rubbish back problem, so I bought a Crown class D to go with Barfaced(s) - I own three Matamp/Ormat clones, but I wouldn't seriously consider them as play-out kit (too heavy/breakable/valuable...etc, etc) )....makes sense to me...............

:)

5. I'd let it dry & then see how bad/if it smelt (from a distance) if it does, I'd squirt some Fabreze at it (good idea to remove & wash grille first) - most of this smell stuff decays pretty fast (apart from cats pee in the back of an estate car - that'd survive a nuclear holocaust).

6. "So I found myself with an hour to kill today between finishing a days work and meeting my wife for a quick drink before heading home. I went to my local music shop just to keep abreast of their stock and see what they had in."
And how many other musos kill time, often without even buying strings? I'm in retail(not music) - we now shut at 4 because we got totally pi**ed off with people killing time before their bus left....I used to stay open until 6, and it was a novelty to take more than a fiver.....Mary Portas can have it, as far as I'm concerned.....and while I'm on the rant, totally crapped off with peeps who come in to mine & then go on line to get it cheaper(?) having worked out that it's what they want (at our expense).

And breath...........

:)

7. Horses for courses i guess - Jeff Lewis runs Matamp out a shambolic old and cold mill up t'north. His executive transport is a old white van - he's not making a million quid a minute, but he loves his work & does his best to keep customers happy. I don't think there's many firms that you can call on Boxing Day morning & talk to the Guvnor (I did) - he gets my vote every time...........

:)

Oh yes - the kits bloody impressive too............

8. .........Most shops will do a deal.........

In the end they do one deal too many and that's another empty window.

I'm not in music retail - but I have idiots trying to get discount on ten pound
items on a frequent basis - it's just a pain in the rear......

9. A few years back, I had some 15" Tannoy Golds in 2'x2' x 1' Chipboard boxes - the backs simply screwed on, and I landed up fitting them with carpet felt, and a ruddy great 4x2 brace across the middle, the back being screwed to it in three places - used them for about ten years with no issues (apart from the pathetically low wattage handling)....sounded nice, though......

:)

vvvv I bought six at 45 quid each, they'd come from the Blind Beggar pub (Google Kray Brothers) in 1977(ish) - I used them fairly solidly until the mid 80's and sold them, out of the cabinets to a bloke that was exporting UK kit to Japan. I think he paid me a thousand quid for all of them (with crossovers), so I was a happy bunny.....they seem to be about 1k each now, but it's been thirty years......I also sold him a Quad preamp & two amps along with a Thorens deck - I think he gave me 1500 in total (sigh).....
