I'm a sound system - in the early 70s I used two 100watt Vortexion s/s monoblocks and a 200watt Orange Matamp (valve)...I went over to a 200watt Ormat pa amp and the original 200 Ormat.....that lot was retired early 80s for a Soundcraft install amp (mosfet) which was capable of 1k.....I sold the lot in the 90's and started re-equiping.
Currently I have a Crown XLS Drivecore 2k.
As alternatives, I have around 800watts+ of Matamp/Ormat(different from the earlier stuff - KT120's) and/or a 200watt Marshall valve rackmount. You pays your money....
Back in the day, I think band amplification was generally bloody awful and the sheer wall of distortion actually made it sound louder than it really was.
I like the fact that I've now got a fair amount of clean power on tap, so turning up the wick is no problem.
BTW - I use two BF Dubsters and a pair of Mackie c200....it's plenty loud enough (!)

Oh dear, goodbye to yet another..........
R.I.P. & thank you........

So I'm standing in the shop when this gorilla staggers in and chucks a box clearly covered in 'fragile' tape on the counter with a resounding bang.
'Sbluddy eavy' it grunts - 'yes it would be' I reply, trying not to be annoyed. 'wassinnit?' it asks - 'a 1970 rock and roll amplifier' I reply. Gorilla grunts as I sign for it, and leaves.
Fortunately my 100 Ormat was, fine, but needed a tech due to my buying from a not good 'dealer' - it was filthy inside and out, and needed recapping ('cleaned & serviced' the ad said) - it's now 101%.
If anyone wants to know the 'dealer' feel free to pm (it wasn't packed well, either).........
I hate, loathe and detest couriers.

Have a mooch round the shops and start off with a weight check, then try the 'sound'.
Think about getting a BF and giving it a (trial) go..Alex will always advise, the guy is good.
At this point you should have a fair idea of what is/isn't for you..........
-
I didn't think he was truly awful, just not very interesting....but then, Maccas done that, on & off, for years..........
-
I'm with Blue - I don't do 'charity' gigs, favours for 'mates', auditions, competitions or any of said cr*p.
No pay - no play
Simple & long term, it works......

Seems to have been 'edited' a week ago........
- I wonder why?
-
I've had alcoholic staff, alcoholic wives and alcoholic friends - none of this stuff ends well.
The band is supposed to be a job - you can't do a proper job p1ssed -
No-one needs a train wreck in their life - get rid - either him or the band.
-
I've only ever done a handful of gigs for managed premises - without fail they've been a total pia.
Companies, by and large, seem to employ total w*nkers who think their role is to be a dense as possible.
(most succeed without the need to try)
-
I've never used Yamaha kit, but a friend who did a lot of hire from his shop swore by it - said it was basically solid & idiot proof.
-
If you have an effects return socket, this will give you access to the amp 'proper', without the tone interruption ?
Just an idea............

Thanks Northy -
'Hey taunton-hobbit I come from Holmfirth and know the guys at Matamp! They said the couldn't compete with the Genz for bass.
Guitar amps are amazing from there however.'
I suspect that t'magic mill could produce an amazing 200watt bass amp if you asked nicely (!) - finding time to do it might be more of a problem than the technical stuff involved..also Matamp don't make a bass-specific speaker (I use Ormat/Matamps, but with Barefaced Dubsters for the thumpy stuff)

The Stones (& Quo) come in for an awful lot of slagging off - (as do the Beatles)-
I do get the feeling that some folk are pi**ed off by success - these bands are (arguably)
as big as it gets, and that annoys.....
....so go for it....do better.....
....away you go.....
-
I've used all sorts/sizes over the years - I'd never use a 12" for anything other than mid(ish).......
-
I think it depends on your venue size - I covered the fronts of a pair of Selmer prototypes, many years ago, in curtain material - it
was quite heavy, but no-one seemed to notice any difference.
I think we (might) tend to agonise a bit these days.....?
. -
That'll be a 'no' then...........
-
I use the cheap rgb floods in my shop widows - they are on 24/7 and I reckon I get 12-18 months out of each (roughly)...the life expectancy seems to have got lots better as the years have gone by. As a tryout for stage, I think they'd be ideal. If I were still gigging, it's certainly the direction I would be looking to.
-
I've some experience of 'cheap' / 'disco' amps - my advice, for what it's worth, is to avoid...they're cheap for a reason and I've never come across one that was any good in the real (gigging) world........
-
Indifferent customer service seems to go with the set....I've been pi*sed around by big name boutique builders (I'll spare their blushes) and by one-man 'specialist' builders/fixers....you pays your money....find a sound that you like, and go from there - I'm a great believer in high power amps, you need that headroom, imo.
-
I used to run Chris Squire around in the back of my mini van - the front (& most of the back) was full of band gear - the average journey was under half an hour, and I had earache all the time..........
Oops, serves me right for speed reading - I thought it merely asked about 'bass players'............ -
I have a couple of Dubsters (Barefaced), bought new a few years ago - used with class D Crown XLS and/or Ormats - it would take a lot to get me to go anywhere else............
-
Littlewoods and, as far as I know, all of the electronics & furniture shed retailers finance through money brokers who assume the debt load, together with the interest. The retailer gets paid cost for the kit, plus a %, which covers their expenses/overheads. Thus the 'retailer' isn't that bothered over status.....
-
While we're on the subject of extinct stuff - banana oil - used to be used on knitting machine needle beds - any ideas?
vvvv thanks Dad - good start...... -
This is where we run into the 'perceived value/worth' thing - I dread to think how much my kit is 'worth' - I'll just leave it to my executors to struggle with flogging it off (& no, I'm not joking)
It's new cab time. Needs to be light!

Interesting - I won't be parting with my Dubsters anytime soon.........
