    Growl = lots of mids

    Hifi = too much treble

    😬

    On a note serious note I'm happy to listen to recommendations for any 2 pickup, 4 knob config, ideally with a mid control.

    I have a 4-pot Nordstrand in one of my Bass Collections which works very well and wasn't expensive. Not sure how I'd describe sound colouring but I think the pickups have a much bigger effect on this aspect than the pre-amp does.

    Nordstrand has a blend pot; a volume pot with a pull-switch for active-passive; a stacked treble/bass pot; and a stacked midrange cut/boost and frequency selector. I think Bass Direct have them new, I pickup up mine second-hand on here.

    Thanks all for your valued inputs. Just to clarify pete.young it is not an acoustic bass I have but a Gibson SJ 200 acoustic with an aftermarket Fishman Matrix Blend fitted with an under saddle pickup and a goose neck mic. I have tried running this to to our desk from a wedge monitor. The sound man says he has no control over my signal which through his headphones sound loud and boomy. Hence my purchase of the Rumble to double up for bass duties and for when I play acoustic.

    The Fishman Matrix system is an expensive and very high quality system for acoustic guitar, so it's quite hard to see how running it through a budget bass guitar amp is going to make it sound any better. Rather than run it through a wedge monitor, you will get the best results by sending the signal straight to the desk , and then sending a signal back to the monitor from one of the Aux Sends on the desk.

  3. If you have an acoustic bass with a piezo pickup and no built-in pre-amp, that is likely to require an input resistance of more than 1 MOhm. I'm not sure what the specs are for that particular Rumble, so that might be an issue. If your acoustic bass has a pre-amp, it should be fine. What electro-acoustic bass do you have?

    I've not used the Caline but it looks like a decent SansAmp clone for not much money. It will probably improve the sound of your bass, or at least give you more control over it. I can't find a spec for the input resistance though - this won't matter if you already have a preamp.

  4. My latest banjo project - this all started when the long-scale Cort tenor finally succumbed to the fractured neck joint. I was looking for a cheap replacement neck and a UK luthier-made one popped up on ebay, so I bought it. I then spent a couple of months plucking up the courage to drill the neck for the horrible cheap single-rod fixing, and generally deciding that the neck deserved a nicer pot. Then 2 things happened: firstly, I found a way of fixing the headstock break on the original neck, and secondly the same luthier put up a ready made pot with hardware, so I bought that too.

    The neck has now been fixed to the pot and I am waiting for some tuners, a tailpiece and a bridge so that I can string it up.

    So whats the best combo for accordian? I know, anything as long as its off! Didn't stop roland making a £4k V-Accordian though.

    My V-Accordion sounds fantastic through my Roland AC60, with a TecAmp Puma as a sub.

  6. There are a lot of options for 4 Ohm 2x12. A lot of 12" drivers seem to be only availble in 8 Ohm ratings, and the options for wiring them together are limited.

    I have an EBS Neo 2x12 . It's a great sounding cab and very sensitive - quoted as 103dB. I used it with an LM2 for a while and it was a great combination.

    When I got it it was unfeasibly light at 24 Kg. Time has moved on so I guess it's no longer a true lightweight but I can still lift it with one hand.

    I've been experimenting with double bass IR's for some time using a Mooer Radar. I'm not really using it anymore so might consider selling it including a few dozen IR's I've collected.

    How well does it work with fretless bass guitar? Maybe you don't need the electric upright after all 🙂

  8. Ah, I see. The 410TVX is a decent sounding cab, which are cheap because they are heavy. You will need a separate head for it.

    You might be better to hold on for a used combo - the Fender Rumble range for example, there are plenty about in sizes from 40W up to 500W, any of which would be an improvement on your Ampeg.

  9. There is no speaker out or extension so no you can't just plug it into another cabinet. You could take the line out and plug it into another combo or head/cab setup, but really what would be the point - A BA 108 is a bedroom practice amp at best.

  10. Irish bouzouki has a longer scale length, not quite as long as an actual Greek bouzouki but a serious stretch for GDAE particularly if you are attempting to use violin fingering, rather than Irish tenor banjo style (use the pinky on the 5th fret and slide up to the 7th).

    I'd say if you want to play melodies and use GDAE then an octave mandolin would be a good choice. If you are more focussed on accompaniment and GDAD then a bouzouki scale length allows you lighter strings which ning out more.

    Ashbury stuff is pretty good at entry level. Very similar to Ozark.

  11. For several years, until Covid and lockdowns intervened, I was fortunate to play in a band called Waxies Dargle, which played the music of The Pogues.

    To mark Shane's passing, we've decided to come out of retirement to play a one-off concert to celebrate Shane's life and all the great music that he and the Pogues made, and raise some money for Encephalitis International.

  12. My least favourite was the Royal Horseguards Hotel in Whitehall Place. We played at a private party there once on the second floor. Stunning views of the Millenium Wheel. But load-in was down a flight of steps in the street, through a couple of passage ways, through the kitchen (currently engaged in providing dinner service for about 200 guests), round some more passages, into a crappy goods lift, and then another set of passages on the 2nd floor.

    Loading out was much easier, down two flights of stairs in the adjoining Liberal Club (talk about seedy opulence) and out the main entrance.

    Parking was less of a challenge than you might expect - the drummer ran a parking business and had the keys to a nearby underground carpark.

  13. Smoothhound PSU is 9V centre positive so you'd need a polarity adaptor.

    I have a Nordell Audio unit which is really great, it's isolated and totally silent, but only has one 500ma output.

    How it works, lots on internet

    1.  Buyer pays by PayPal and arranges for courier/friend/whatever to collect.
    2.  Item is collected.
    3.  Buyer contacts PayPal to open a dispute, claiming they never received the item.

    4.  PayPal sides with the buyer, as the only proof of receipt they will accept is tracked proof of delivery.
    5.  The scammer now has your item and his money refunded.

    I haven't bought anything for a while, but I think Paypal have now introduced another step, which requires the seller to enter a code when the item is collected, thereby nullifying point (3) .
