1.
Looks nice to me! When does the body date from? Si
That's the $64,000 dollar question! It's been repsprayed in a hideous red orange - a poor attempt a Fiesta Red. So that will all be getting stripped off so we can see what's underneath. And it does indeed have the 'router hump' that many vintage 60's Fender bodies have on the lower horn - so it's definitely an old body, or maybe a good re-issue body (but I don't know if they added that particluar detail on any re-issue bodies???). Plus it has a correct original 1960 neck plate & serial number (not even mentioned on the eBay listing). If we find the 4 individual string mute holes filled in then I'll be a very happy man indeed...!
 2.
Would you mind telling us how much it went for?
£620.
 3. So I snapped it up! At first glance a seemingly very ropey ‘Frankenstein Jazz bass’ that has seen better days & been refinished & mucked about with - with the wrong decal on the headstock & is a horrid orange colour... The seller has to relist because it attracted 0 bids the first time it was listed. And everybody ignored it the 2nd time - except me. And it does indeed have a genuine 1960 ‘slab board’ neck (though refinished with a 70's decal) - the Holy Grail of vintage bass necks – the first year of production for Fender Jazz basses. If the neck was 100% original – it alone would be worth £2-3K. Plus it has other original 60’s & 70’s vintage parts on it that I could make a tidy profit on if I sold them separately - bridge, & tuners – worth many hundreds. And an original 1960 date neck plate – I know guys that would pay big bucks just for that alone. But I think it could make a fabulous ‘project’ bass – get it stripped down & re-finished – put back the proper 1960 headstock decal, find a few other nice bits (maybe add a John East gadget?). I told my guitar tech guy about it (he’s gonna do the restoration/rebuild for me) - was astonished that I nabbed it as the only bidder. He thinks the neck alone could be worth at least £1,000 when restored – that’s how rare they are. I’m really looking forward to building up the whole bass & bringing it back to life... And I have a suspicion that this could turn out to be the nicest playing bass of all of mine – the neck is gorgeous to play. *** UPDATED *** Well - I finally had all that hideous orange paint stripped off the body (horrendous - it was about 10cm thick! + white primer) .... & what did we find underneath? OH MY GOD YES!! An 100% original 1960 Alder Jazz bass body to go with the 1960 neck!!! Complete with the 4 individual mute holes...that had been plugged up by the crazy fool that sprayed it orange! What a result!!! WooHoo!!! I’m off to dance round the house again!! 4.
Yup, the logo on the first pic is not quite right. It's a sort of cross between a 1960 and a 1961 logo. The second pic looks like a [genuine] pre 66 logo, although those tuners ain't right as far as I'm aware.
Spot on Muppet. The first one is a messed up attempt at a 1960 logo (missing the 'PAT PEND.' ) on a modern headstock. The 2nd pic does indeed look like a genuine 64 logo - but the tuners are wrong for that year - they should be pinned reverse Klusons - quite apart from their obviously brand new shiny look... (Oh no - Just realised what a 'vintage geek' I've turned into!!! )
 5.
You're the devil you are, and I cast the holy water in your general direction. Stop tempting us with your evil wares.
You're right - it's too late for me now...my soul was sold long ago to pay for these 2 temptresses! But save yourself while you still have the chance!!!
 6.
Oh give WFG a chance to reply first. He bothered to create a wanted post. I'm third in cue. Never mind, I'm in no hurry.
Hi Paul, Looks like Joe has some: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=1389 So they're yours if you want them. I'll PM you with info... Cheers Jim
 7.
99ster, Where the hell did you find that Jazz..... what an amazin' condition it's in...... 100% original and bleedin' 'ell it's in better nick than my '63 refin! You jammy..... erm.... bassist, and isn't your '66 Precision 100% orig. and in ex. cond. as well? (Envious) Mart
Where did I find it? It came from France - after many months of patient searching... & VERY large dent in my bank account. My 66 Precision is probably in even better condition - basically mint.
 8.
Definately needs to be seen! :-D Si
Here you go... 1966 Playmate Of The Year!
 9. As requested... Here she is - 1965's younger sister... A very special 1966 Fender Precision. 100% original & not far off mint condition. Enjoy! 10.
Fab is the word can u repeat the PB pics and perhaps a shot of the two playmates laying on a bed together!
I have had a few requests for another session with 'Miss 1966' - so I may well have to do that... But both together at the same time? I don't know if I can cope with that!!!
 11.
Many congratulations. Your patience has paid off in a big way. That is a truly magnificent example of a pre-CBS Jazz. May you have all health to enjoy it for many years to come.
Many thanks for your kind words Hutton - much appreciated!
 12.
That's beautiful!!! Where did you manage to find that? Bet it cost a pretty-penny! Nice one dude! Si
Thanks guys! That has taken me a LONG time to find...many months of rejecting other 1965's (& other years) until I was finally offered this one. Also looked at buying some from the US - but there's no difference in the price when you add on duty, vat & shipping. And I wish I could say I got it for a bargain price - but they don't exist...there are no 'bargains' for one in this condition. So I did cost me a LOT of money.... But it's what I've alway wanted - & makes a beautiful pair with my mint 66 Precision. I may well sell my very nice '72 sunburst Jazz now...not sure how much interest that would get here?
 13. A treat for all you vintage lovers out there... Following on from the lovely '1966 Playmate Of The Year' (http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=1543) - here we have her gorgeous older sister! My latest purchase - a very special 1965 L series Fender Jazz - 100% original. And clean as a whistle. Enjoy! So if Joe isn't interested then the bridge cover + thumbrest is still available for you Paul.
 15.
Y'see, I'm sure Bravewood guitars play fine'n'dandy, I seem to be the only person in the world that thinks their body relic-ing is terrible. Do all their customers really ask for them to be relic'd as if they've done three sets a night for thirty years in a termite colony? Just wonderin'.
No - you're not the only one! I've got to agree with you - his body relic-ing is absolutely awful... I've owned & played a LOT of real vintage guitars & the bodies do NOT look like that after 40 years. That said - a lot of the other stuff he does is really great - but not what he does to the bodies. Looks so obviously faked - very poor.
 16.
I'll take them off your hands if Joe doesn't want them! paul.
OK Paul they're yours if Joe doesn't want them...! Thanks.

 19.
Found a new set of Fender covers (bridge and pickup) with a thumbrest for £25 + £3 P&P BIN. Does this sound reasonable? It would be about the same price from Thomann (with shipping) without the thumbrest and thats about the only place I've managed to find them at a reasonable price other than on Ebay. I was planning on geting a thumbrest at some point anyway so may as well get it and save a few quid, unless anyone has some used ones knocking about.
I've got a thumbrest (Fender) + a Fender reissue Precision bridge chrome cover available - both 'as new' with all the screws, etc. I got them from here http://basspartsresource.com/ - which cost me about £16. I bought them for a bass project that I never ended up doing... Yours for £10 - incl P&P. PayPal is OK. I've got LOADS of other parts as well for sale (need to do a posting with them all listed) - including some nice proper vintage bits - if you're interested...

 21. This company supply the top-end (custom fit) Etymotic ear protection (ER-15)... similar price about £165 - which for me is cheap to protect my hearing!!! If I had to spend £1,650 to make sure I didn't go deaf I would still call that a bargain price. http://www.handheldaudio.co.uk/pages/ui_home.asp (and they are also the sole UK distributors for the 'Ultimate Ears' custom fit 'inner ear' monitor systems - the absolute best kit that all the top musicians & engineers use...(£600-800) http://www.ultimateears.com/ - so they must know their stuff)
 22. http://www.fliptops.net/index.htm Fantastic source for parts & expert info on vintage Ampegs.
 23.
For sale at Vintage and Rare for the princely sum of £6850... But it is absolutely stunning. That matching headstock is just... "wow!". Would you?
Look closer - it has some weird plastic cover ('Parker Bodyguard') stuck all over the body... That would massively de-value this bass to a serious collector. A large part of the great tone from vintage Fender basses is due to the thin Nitro coating on the body - this lets the wood 'breathe' & resonate. The custom colour basses tend to have a poorer tone anyway compared to the sunburst ones because of the thicker paint - then this one has had a thick layer of plastic glued to it!!! It's a DOG!!! I wouldn't touch it. Let alone pay £6850. Hilarious! And 1966 Jazz basses are not a great year anyway - they're generally to be avoided if your after a 60's era Jazz bass. I can just imagine the conversation if you were taking that bass into them to SELL - they wouldn't give you tuppence for it like that!
 24.
the concept of 'Sounding Better' is subjective and relative. My drummer mate did a session for Dizzee Rascal on '...later with Jools Holland' the other week. The bassist for the session had a very nice Ken Smith. Basschat members have all commented on the bass and how good it sounded. Nick Cave's band Grinderman were also playing, and their bassist had a beat up old Precision. My friend says that Dizzee's bass player went straight over to said Precision and was mavelling over it. Based purely on the actual market rate for the instrument itself witout the vintage element factored in, the Ken Smith is maybe 3 or 4 times more expensive and the product of many more hours labour. Yet, given a boutique neck through active five string and a beat up old Precision (unsure of Vintage), the precision wins- on this occasion. 'Tis a strange world
That's Martyn Casey - also the bass player from Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. I love his playing. That gorgeous bashed up old Fender Precision he plays is an early 60's (pre 64 I reckon) model - with white/cream, pick-up covers added. That's all I've ever seen him playing. Runs it through an Ampeg SVT CL - nice & LOUD. Mmmmm... lovely. And your mate is one hell of a good drummer!
 25.
That's interesting to know - so how exactly did you manage this. Did you have to pay 17.5% and then claim back. I guess all of us who are considering buying from outside the EU would like to know.
+1 on that! I recently imported a 1965 Ampeg B-15N from the US - & paid the 17.5% VAT on top of the duty. I would LOVE to know how you claimed back some of the tax!!
