1. So beautiful... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...p;rd=1&rd=1 Watch the price on this beauty go bananas! There'll be a feeding frenzy towards the end.
  2. The 2 sets of DR Hi-Beams I ordered from MyMusicStuff have just arrived - ordered on the 19th so took a week from the US. A fantastic price (HALF the price I'd pay from Stringbusters!) - & a week delivery time from the US (postage $10) is OK by me. All-in-all a total 'no brainer'! It's like 'buy one get one free'! The best place I've ever found for strings! Many thanks for the tip guys!
  3.
Have these gone to Paul yet?
Yes - Paul has these now - I'll update the original post...
  4. How about black for the new colour? I've got a black one (like the guy from 'The Hives') - & it looks great! And yes - the sound is absolutely monstrous from that humbucker!
  5. Fantastic reproduction vintage electrical components for basses (& geetars) & Amps - highly recommended: http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Luxe-Guitars

I'm sure there was one for sale for quite a while on the old BassWorld forum...?
  7.
stick a j retro in there!
When I was first planning what to do with the 'orange beast' I had considered a J Retro... But once I'd found out that the body was also 1960 like the neck I decided to go for a full restoration - so I've now sourced 250/250k pots (the 62 reissue stack knob kit is good for the knobs & control plate - but has has 250/500k pots which aren't authentic for a 60 bass) - & even got wax/paper capacitors & carbon comp resistors to the original spec from this amazing guy on eBay who hand builds vintage components. So no - there'll be none of that fancy new modern electronics nonsense! Yuk!
  8. Yeah - that's nice...! It's really got that 70's punk vibe - Pistols, Clash, Ramones - kinda feel. Lovely. Funnily enough - I just got offered an ex Sex Pistols '74 Precision... for sale at £20K!
  9.
Result. The dream lives on!
Yep - I suppose this proves there are still some bargains out there to be had...if you're lucky.
  10.
that's a thought, if the guy had just sold the parts he'd probzo have gotten more money for it!
Without a doubt. Much, much more than he got for the complete bass... And that was a possible option for me until I had it confirmed that both the neck & body were 1960 originals.
  11.
MB1. Looking forward to the unvieling ceremony, hope all goes well!.(nice to see some good news, regarding ebay instead of the normal horror stories.)
I've been stitched up more than once on eBay - so I'm thinking of it as karma!
  12.
Come on you tease, when do we get pics of the emporer in his new clothes?
Unfortunately, it will be a while yet - a couple of months probably...as it will take a month at least just for the nitro cellulose lacquer to dry properly. And I'm waiting for some custom electrics for the stack knobs to come from the US. You can't rush a job like this - it's got to be done properly! But as soon as it's all done I'll be taking loads of photos - & I'll post them here first (of course!).
  13.
MB1. Great find!,you do know your fenders,i wouldnt have had a clue to be honest, and at £620 i doubt many people would have wanted to take the chance(probably why you were bidding on your own).Definately a lamb dressed as mutton story, nice one. All The Best. MB1.
Many thanks MB1! Just for once - being an obsessive sad B*****D vintage bass geek was a handy thing to be!! To be honest I would have paid that much just for the 1960 neck alone - even though it needs a lot of restoration - as the magic of having anything from one of the very first Jazz basses fascinates me. To get a '60 body & all the other bits was luck really & maybe a reward for being ready to take a punt. Funny thing is I had only just told a mate (who was looking for an old Gibson) to not even consider finding a 'bargain' vintage guitar on eBay - as they were none to be had anymore! All the best 99ster
  14. On the fabulous 'Standing In The Shadows Of Motown' DVD you can clearly see that Bob Babbitt has a simple piece of foam sponge under the strings by the bridge on his '65 P Bass (with LaBella Medium flatwounds) - & he gets a great sound. "...it had no foam dampener, so I found a sponge in the dressing room, tore off a piece, wet it, and put it under my bridge cover..."
  15.
2 stacked knobs - black, two tips and two rings. £10? Thanks, Joe.
Could you post a photo if possible please Joe? Thanks!
  16.
I'm happy to report that my strings arrived this morning from http://stores.ebay.co.uk/MyMusicStuff_W0QQ...sQ3amesstQQtZkm No nasty import tax either so I'm a happy chap. Cheers for the info Tempo. Wazz
Sounds good! Thanks for the info Tempo & Wazz. I've just ordered 2 sets of DR Hi-Beams from MyMusicStuff - at half the price I'd pay from Stringbusters. I'll report back when they arrive...
  17.
Brilliant, just brilliant, I'm still laughing now......
Ditto. That's priceless!
  18.
Is he the guy that does those Jaco 'tribute' basses that he says are so good?
I have had a go on one of his Jaco basses - it was very good value for money & played lovely. It wasn't in the 'fantastic' class -but then he only charges less than £2-250 for them...
  19.
Thats him. Not sure about his other stuff, but spent about 6 months discussing this bass with him, as I didn't want ot end up with a pile of sh1te. A guitarist Iknow had bought one of his PRS and was really impressed, so suggested I contact him. Really very pleased with the result.
A friend of mine bought a Tele from him (copy of the Albert Lee model) - he absolutely loves, as does everyone who plays it. David is definitely a cool guy...probably doesn't charge enough for the work he puts in.
