I think we're being a bit harsh on the guy. I would agree that once its been sold by the shop/dealer it ceases to be new, but we all know what he means, however optimistic he is being with his starting price.
"As new" would be an accurate description, but I don't think you can use that on eBay these days, can you?
I wouldn't say they are that hard to come by either.
Not harsh at all, the bass is secondhand not new.

  2. It's not new. It may not be "used". But it is definitely secondhand. As new is a truer description. As mentioned earlier a lot is known about the sound for an unplayed bass. I would guess thus guy/gal bought this guitar and didn't gel with it and is now tryna recoup his dough, fair enough but it's not new.

I've just read this thread in its entirety, and I get the mental picture of boys competing for who can p1$$ further up the wall!

At the end of it all, they're ALL just personal opinions, and in mine, this type of "point proving" doesn't do the forum any favours, and repeating the same argument/opinion over and over doesn't make it any more valid than anyone else's. Th OP asked a fair question and wanted a considered opinion......did he get it?

    Off to bed now.

Come on now it's only a bit of banter.

It's certainly got more in common with Fender USA than anything coming from the far east.

I consider it important to clarify that I was not selling the bass as something it isn't (just as some opinions here point out about the ad featured in the OP) and I would take seriously any accusation that a fraud has been committed.
And so you should sir. I have no doubt that you are a man of utmost integrity. The mere suggestion that personal modifying of a headstock is committing a fraud is utterly unacceptable. But some people think they can say what they like around here. However if you say anything back to them it's all tears in the solder pot.

I have the 'pair' referred to above.

With respect, I'm afraid you're wrong on the plate, the original 1st series (only made for 3 months), have 3 ply guards (Black/White/Tort).

The plate looks right to me, I can't see any reference in the ad to it being a 3 or 4 though?

I don't know what model you have, but the original guards are what they call red tort, if yours is the brown tort, then to my knowledge (Pretty good on JV's), its not original. If you have a later version though, it may be, I dont know much about the later models.

This is priced right for a 1st series JV in my opinion, they are extremely rare. The later Squier decal basses are typically around half the price of these. The Jazz's are a little more than the P's too. In a more bouyant market this would have been sold at this price.
Yes this is a fair price in fact if I was a little more flush I'd make an offer on one of your two. Not an
    Option at the moment though.

    I think you can.
It's like the difference between someone having the occasional puff of herbal and dealing smack. You'd have them both locked up in irons because you can't differentiate between them. :D

Hang on, are you saying you had a Fender labelled bass that wasn't a Fender? ..... Ooh methinks he doth protest too much.

If Howard built Discreet's bass (I've never heard of it until now) then it's probably better than a fecking fender in the first place so they will be getting themselves a fecking bargain. :P

Ebay dude is making a bob... quite literally... that's why I don't understand why he's bothering. He'd make it worth his while by saying they were Fenders and charging appropriately - but he's not.

    I'm confused who's on crack?

I am always chilled out thanks, it's not leg pulling when you stoop to using that sort of insult towards anybody. Instead of me chilling I would suggest that you withdraw your remarks & offer an apology. Even on a internet forum there is a line between derogatory name calling & 'leg pulling', which I feel you have overstepped.

If you really don't understand my comment, it's because you don't seem to understand that what the seller in question seems to be doing - adding logos to basses (at least) & selling them as something they are not, is illegal, not good for the industry & not good for the 'straight' guitar buying public.
I'm sorry i hurt your feelings and I disagree with you. Now let's move on.

That one does have the Fender logo though, which are supposedly rarer than yours with the Squier logo.

See one (or a pair) for sale here for £1200 also: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/174713-feeler-pair-of-1st-series-jv-basses-pj-rare/page__hl__jv%20jazz%20precision

I didn't notice that. Yes that does change the goalpost slightly.

Excuse me - who exactly are you directing your childish but nasty comments at?

To repeat - you really don't understand do you?
I thought you'd bite, chill out I'm pulling your leg. In response to your "don't understand" comment I have asked you to enlighten me but you failed to respond.

If that JV sells for that I shall eat my pants.

Edit: and the scratchplate does not look original to me - it's too red and only 3 ply
Mine is browner and 4 ply and i know mines original coz I bought it new.
I know what you are saying. Thus guy has been flagged on here before. I think he sticks them up in the hope some mug will fall for his spin. It's a nice guitar but probably not £1200 nice.

It doesn't say Squier on the headstock and the serial number isn't one I can find on the Fender dating database - it looks like D180766 to me.

Any ideas whether this is a bargain or one to stay well clear of?

    Thanks for any help.

    Cheers - Nick

This was the original question, then some paranoid lunatic got it in his head that there was a master scammer on the lose and wanted to call the cops or tell the teacher until he finally got the picture but at this stage he couldn't back down in fear of losing face so the subject kept changing to suit his stance.

Then other dudes got involved depending on what was happening and the original point got lost Along the way.

So I think a fair answer to the original post is--
If you think this is an original fender misadvertised as a squier by mistake for some reason and you think it is a bargain to be had, then don't buy it.

However if you think this is a squier with mods and you are into that type of thing, then it's probably not the best value guitar out there but it definitely not a bad buy.

So in short this is a modified squier not an original fender. Now that you have all the info please feel free to proceed how you desire and if anyone here wants to judge you that's their problem.

I personally feel that a good quality squier should wear the fender badge with pride. Amen.

Hang on man. Neepheid (a self confessed Gibson addict) was simply responding to your claim that most of us have had a Fender badged Squier at some point and that it is accepted as normal practice.
To be fair this is a pretty wild assumption, if only for the following reasons... firstly it's not true :) ... and secondly because contrary to what some would have us believe, a vast amount of bass players don't even care about Fenders, let alone be so indoctrinated into the cult as to have to fake one up so "our public" thinks we are playing one when we are not.

    Chili-chill-chill :)
You have a very calming affect outshined. Trust me I'm chilled. Everything I wrote was a bit tongue in cheek.

Obviously not everyone has owned a decal modded squier. But it is commonplace and I honestly think that it is not a big deal. I am amazed that people think it is. I do think calling me a "dick" for having a bit of banter is a bit strong. Nonetheless if that's how people want to conduct themselves that's their choice.

So no problem here mate thank you for pointing this out to me.
