Finally(!!) managed to getting round to spending some time with my Helix Stomp yesterday.

I've got an impending sense of foreboding...for a LOT of the dedicated pedals on my board!!

Started by just mucking about with a guitar dirt (02 preset) and I thought "hmmm...this is actually pretty tasty - with a bit of tweaking, both my Aftershock and Grizzly Bass could be feeling the heat!"

Then went on to set up a 'First filter' patch. Very simple -found the (Mu)Tron sim which is available in both up and down sweep and thought I'd have a bit of fun creating an Aggie Filter twin patch. Ended up just with the up-sweep rather than both together. Well blow me! It's good - A/B'd it with the Fwonk and MXR BEF and I thought "live, this is going to get me 90%+ of the way there" i.e. very usable. For the record - I never felt that about the quality of either the drive or filter effects sims on the B3n. And these were just the first couple of dedicated effects areas I've looked at.

Am I already thinking that this is worth the premium over the Zoom B3n (and by extension the rest of the Zoom multifx range). Too right I am! :)

Glad you have sussed it out, I ain't dialed any filters that work well in a live situation so far. 🤔

What am I doing wrong kids? I bought the above mentioned switcher which I intended to use as fs4 and fs5.
I went in to global settings and set fs4 as preset up and fs5 as preset down. Attached with a trs cable, it goes up but it won't switch down? Am I missing a setting? Cheers in advance 😁

How are people getting on with these in a live situation?

Considering changing from the hx effects, I hardly touch the thing during a gig and have got my basic patch down to 5/6 blocks now too. Would like a smaller board!

Love it. Really liking the snapshot mode. It's intuitive, 10 mins and I'd got it.

  4. Anyone using external footswiches? The DCM Micro and the morningstar midi solution appear popular. Any others out there that are available in UK?

When in stomp mode I want to be able to access a tuner easily and switch between presets without having to press any buttons.

    Cheers

    VERSION:  Floor

    TITLE: Basic amp patches

DESCRIPTION: Basic Live tones set up

IN DETAIL: Here are six patches for the Floor. SVT normal, Mesa 400+ Channel 1, Mesa 400+  Channel 2, Aguilar DB 751, GK 800 and the B15 Portaflex. The 'SW' in the preset name are my initials.

These are optimised for my live sound with a Fender Precision. I send XLR to FOH and the 1/4" to a Barefaced FR800 for monitoring.  I reduce the XLR output by 16db and use the volume knob to control the 1/4" output only. The sounds through headphones is slightly different. I initially created them using headphones (AKG 702) but then had to tweak for live use.

Also in the patch is an IR block directly after each amp block. if  you load these in to your Helix the IR is missing but ping me a message and I'll let you have it, or you can just select a cab block of your choice.

There are a basic set of effects too.  I included the graphic at the end of the chain just in case I needed to make any room adjustments but in the presets they are currently all set to flat.

For me, the inclusion of the 3 band compressor at the beginning makes a huge difference as it tames the live sound and reduces boominess. The compressor settings are the same across all patches.

The SVT preset has three snapshots too - clean, drive and distortion.

    Steve

    SVT SW.hlx

    Mesa 400+ Ch1 SW.hlx

    Mesa 400+ Ch2 SW.hlx

    DB 751 SW.hlx

    GK 800 SW.hlx

    Flip Top SW.hlx

Hi, tried loading a few of these, but it came up with an error? That because i don't have the IR's? cheers

Well the regular One Spot has a total current output of 1.7A (1700mA) and the Stomp will draw the lion’s share of that - at least 1.2A (1200mA). The problem is that Morningstar don’t seem to publish the current draw of the MC6, but since it’s just a controller with a fairly simple LED screen I’d be surprised if it drew more than 250mA.

So based on fairly educated guesstimation a regular One Spot should power both no problem. Whether the MC6 will introduce noise into the signal chain I’m not sure, but I’d want to isolate the MC6 with something like a GigRig Timelord to be safe. And you’ll still need the correct barrel adaptors to go from “pedal standard” 2.1mm to the 2.5mm power input on the Stomp.

Thinking of using a One spot on my Stomp. So no polarity issues, just barrell size? Probably have something lying around somewhere. Why the hell is it not a standard size!

  7. Hi,

I'm contemplating selling my newly acquired Helix FX, it's brand spanking new. Still has film over all screens. Had a bit of play and set a couple of presets on but that's about it.

So taken out of the box once!

I purchased a second hand one originally, but when it arrived it had a issue with one of the control knobs, I sent it back and the guy took it to the shop and got a brand new replacement! 👍😀

So it's brand spanking with box, instructions, adapter etc.
