  1. Jumping in on this one and no doubt it’s been covered. This thing is a lot of lolly. I’ve been around in circles with analogue and digital effects pedals/units. Found the zoom b3n to be pretty good but just not quite there, settled for a tech 21 bass fly rig at the moment as it just sounds organic. Is the helix another compromise? Sounds good and has bags of features but still sounds digital?

    cheers

Google "Jazz bass wiring" and you'll find diagrams. Any of the online guitar parts suppliers can provide the pots (you need 250k), cap, etc. The standard J bass cap is a Sprague orange drop, in 0.047uF. You can experiment with values (try 0.022uf or 0.1uf - they're cheap) to see which you prefer. A larger value will lower the roll-off frequency. Shop around as prices vary quite a bit and don't be tempted by the exotic paper in oil capacitors some will try to tell you are vital. They're no better  (and considerably bulkier) than the orange drop for guitar use (imho, obviously).

    So something like this?

are Cts pots much of a muchness? Or should I be looking for specific brands?

    cheers

It sounds as if you need to raise the whole neck away from the body a little, rather than adding a shim at one end to increase the break angle, so a shim covering the entire neck pocket surface looks the way to go. Fwiw, I don't buy the arguments about decreasing resonance by introducing a tiny gap, etc. However, covering the entire neck pocket surface won't result in any gap if you do it neatly ( a piece of veneer - you can experiment with thickness - should do the trick).

I wasn’t thinking that myself, perhaps the whole neck needs rising. Veneer, do you mean this kind of thing?

  4. Hi,

i have a Fender MIM 70’s re-issue with block inlays.

its got a Hipshot Bridge and it’s set at its lowest possible point before becoming redundant!

The neck I’ve pretty muched maxed out on truss rod.

It plays and sounds great, however the action is not as low as some of my other jazzes.

    So, cut to the chase.

I’m thinking a shim at butt of the neck would reduce the action. Looking up on the web, there seems to be a lot of opinion on what materials to use etc. Business cards, must be wood for resonance! Etc. I did find an article where the bass in question had what looked to be a Fender installed branded plastic shim.

Intrigued to hear peoples thoughts and advice. To be honest I was just going to whack half a business card in there. Are there any pre-made options available in the UK?

    Cheers

    Tony

  5. Hi,

Been looking at a bass recently and it’s advertised as having a Badass Bridge.

Now I’ve had a couple of Badass II’s over the years but this thing looks nothing like what I know as “Badass”.

the owner is saying it’s defo is and receipts to prove it.

If it is it’s a model I’ve never seen before.

for the record the bass is a Fender Mexican 70’s reissue. So perhaps it’s a custom design?

Amp sim / overdrive will piddle all over the Zoom, assuming you like the VT sound of course. The Ampeg sims in the Zooms don't really come close. All the other FX are probably on par with each other.

Now in a position to compare both. So going to do some like for likes. I do like the fly rig, but tweaking mid set in a live situation is a faff. I can get some great Envelope tones, but the octaver is pretty useless, again trying to quickly dial something in is a faff. I think the ideal may be a VT bass deluxe and zoom for the effects. Although going to persist with fly for a bit longer. There is definitely something tonally there in terms of Sansamp that the zoom although good just doesn’t quite hit the spot of the real thing. Could be the digital v analogue processing. Will update.
