Massive QOTSA fan here. Like Clockwork hasn't grabbed me as I hoped to be honest. I understand and I'm glad it's a big cathartic release for Josh Homme after his near death experience, he's one of the most talented artists of his (and my) generation. The tunes are well crafted but it just doesn't excite me really, nothing I haven't heard before.
Edit: I am listening to it, just not my fave by them and not the best for me this year.

Now, Primal Scream's new album More Light came in under the radar and is my vote.
Can't stop listening to it. It's fantastic.
Just calling my own bluff here.
Like Clockwork has really grown on me these last couple of months, to the point where I'm actually listening to it every day now.
Maybe this is why the reviews weren't universally glowing initially, time is needed to digest it all?
Anyways I'm holding my hands up now, f**king excellent album.

Also another fave of mine this year is Push The Sky Away by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Another killer writer.
Not a 'bass' album at all (pretty subdued compared to 'Dig..' although Martyn P Casey is the king of understated cool (he hardly does anything but he sounds fantastic).

Any nice new discoveries lately anyone?

An interesting list but it shows that there aren't too many 'oldies' on here on BC. Only Macca, JPJ, John Entwistle and Jet Harris are from the 60s Beat Group era. No bassist from the 60-62 era Beat Instrumental Groups (I did add Brian Locking) and not a mention from anyone of 1950s & 60s Jazz bassists like Coleridge Goode, Malcolm Cecil, Phil Bates, Jeff Clyne, Spike Heatley (all Jazz Couriers who were arguably the one British jazz outfit that could hold their own with the Americans at the time), Graham Collier the brilliant composer and arranger, Kenny Napper (Ted Heath and big Band bassist), Cliff Ball (Kenny Graham's Afro-Cubanists).

I feel really old tonight. :)
That's ok as I feel rather educated now :)
That's a great list to check out, bound to find some killer playing there so thanks for that!

Why would car primer not go off properly? I've used car primer and it's been ok. Provided you get a good surface that's clean and grease-free and you take your time and let it dry between coats I can't see what problems there could be.
Not sure why to be honest, just read a couple of times on various forums that it happens. Good to hear you've done it though. It's all in the prep I guess, plus maybe some folks built up the coats too quick. I dunno.
All we can do is our homework as best as we can and then take an educated guess.
If it is that easy to use modern auto paints and primers then that certainly increases everyone's colour options for their basses, plus it makes the products available in the guitar finishing industry seem a bit of an overpriced swizz doesn't it?

6. Flea, upon completion of the BSSM album, refused to gig his Wal MKII as he deemed it too dorky looking and not cool enough for him.
Seeing as he arguably has never sounded better than on that album, he basically decided to trade his best ever tone, the one that inspired a generation of young bassists, for shallow aesthetics (personally I think the Wal looks cool as) Then he ends up touring with those awful day-glo fleabass efforts...

The dork.

(imho and all that jive)

I gave it a listen on Spotify and wasn't all that impressed. 2 or 3 tracks jumped out at me but the rest wasn't very memorable. Maybe its a grower...
It certainly is.

I wasn't too jazzed by it at first to be honest but it's really grown on me.
Initially I was disappointed as I look to QOTSA for a bit of a 'rawk' fix and LC is more subdued (relatively).
But, it does go much deeper than any previous QOTSA album and the textures are rich (this is Josh Hommes post-near death experience album so no wonder the guy's feeling reflective).

Anyhoo, judging by the recent concert footage on youtube, the new stuff does work well with older rawk numbers.

For those who are interested and have time, check out the QOTSAarchive on youtube. I'm subbed to it and they put up new concerts all the time:

The CV 's are fine basses and generally consistant. In the 80's, Fender was dicey, so you might get a gem or a dog. There's no way of any of us being able to tell without playing it.
Odds are on that your CV will be the nicer bass.
Tried a few 80's Fenders when I was shopping for a P once and they were all obscenely heavy. Like REALLY bad back hurt you heavy.
All the CV's I've picked up to play in shops over the last few years have been great, really nice to play (relative to how off the hook shop set ups can be) and always make me smile.
Just play yours for 30 years and you'll have a really cool old bass ;)
If you do go shopping for an older bass though, shop with your head not your heart and be patient until you find the right one for you. There are thousands of basses out there, take your time.

Just a small point... you're thinking of using Tru-Oil, and then spraying?
I've never used "Sanding Sealer" but unless it's got some amazing properties it wont stick to an oiled surface. In fact if you oli the wood nothing much will cover it without it staying as a sticky mess.

Before painting with anything to seal the wood you need to get rid of any remains of oil on the wood. Before painting/spraying any oiled wood you need to wash the wood in loads of white spirit and then sand down the wood to get a smooth finish.

Finish off in 400grain sandpaper (or finer) before spraying.
Thank you for the good advice there Grangur.
I was unsure myself as to spraying a clear coat over Tru-oil, but I've read that many have done this ok as long as you let it dry first and then give it a key as you suggested. Unlike 'real' oil, Tru-oil is a mix of poly-based varnish, boiled linseed oil (which contains drying agents) and thinners, so given a bit of time it will actually dry.
I am going to work ahead of myself on a scrap piece of wood this time just to make sure though!

That's not right, Stuart Zender played on every single track of Emergency On Planet Earth, Return Of The Space Cowboy and Travelling Without Moving apart from two songs, 'When You Gonna Learn' (Andrew Levy, Stuart wasn't even in the band at this stage as far as I'm aware) and the album version of Space Cowboy. He did play on the single version and every single song on the rest of the first three albums, no session players were brought in.

The latter track wasn't played on by Zender because he had taken time out of the studio to sort out his breakup with his then girlfriend. When he came back it turned out that Jay had gotten someone else to fill in for him. Zender was not too pleased.

Zender even played on most of the tracks for the 4th album Synkronized but when he was finally given the boot/left the band his tracks were erased or shelved and Nick Fyffe was brought into replace him. Some of the tracks were available a long time ago to listen to Zender's original recordings.
Yep you are totally correct there...
I remember being surprised and disappointed years ago when I read that Zender only played on Too Young To Die.
I remember now reading his interview in BGM (the one with his sig SZ Warwick in) and he laughed at similar suggestions, even going so far as to say he would show the royalties invoices from Sony for "Emergency".
So yeah, my bad. Forgot about that earlier. :o

Would LOVE to hear his Synkronised basslines! :)

11. I'm confused here.
The Mr. X version you mention is stated as being the album version on that vid, and it sounds like the one I know and love from the album.
Why wouldn't Stu Zender, who was a full time member for the second album, be playing on the album's title track? Weird. But, I suppose saying that it's amazing how little he actually recorded for the first album. A few sessioners laid most if it down before he got the job I believe, including Andrew Levy from the Brand New Heavies.
This is the only version of Space Cowboy I've ever heard. Anyone got a link to the one Stu Zender did play on? Would love to check it out.

12. Check out this Schecter custom P5. They get alot of love on talkbass.
Very versatile due to the bridge humbucker and GAK have them on sale for £389! Barryargain!

13. I've done it to a poly Fender neck so I don't see why a body would be any different.
I just gave it a good rub ovet with 600 grit wet and dry to give the new coating a good key (picked up the tip on either here or talkbass, can't remember which) and shot a can of tinted nitro over the top and it worked great.
On a body though, I'd give it a once over with a white primer designed for instruments (Rothko and Frost do it - was talking to them about my own project yesterday)- heard some nightmare stories abour car primer not going off properly.
