  1. Wow I really enjoyed that, what a great performance by all
OK he wasn't plugged in, I don't think it really matters in this context. I'm sure the producers of that show had enough to worry about without dealing with individual sound levels, and about a dozen musicians running around wireless. Too much room for error probably what with half the planet tuning in.
We know Flea can do it live, he has nothing to prove there whatsoever.
Plus it's not like we haven't seen him mime before - pick any Chili Peppers video. Cool, entertaining, but he is miming on them.

Being a life long pick player I swear by Jim Dunlop Tortex .73

Just the right balance of firm for digging in, flexi for speed and rubbery grip-ness. Love them and always a couple in my back pocket

Another convert of the Dunlop yellows here.
Never really got on with using a pick in the past, mostly a fingers player but always wanted to be better with one as a couple of my favourite players use a pick.
Seem to be getting on with these yellows just fine. Guess I've used picks that were too thick for me in the past.
Because of this thread, I popped into a music shop in Cardiff to check out what picks they had and met a neighbour who has started working there. Gave me a few for nowt. Result!

  3. I've had couple of string-thru body Fenders. One was string-thru only so never gave it much thought, the other had a top load option (Fender HMV bridge). I prefered that bass top load only actually as the bass sounded more alive acoustically with a clearer fundamental which was great at home. Amped up with the band it mattered not a jot which way it was strung in my experience.
For the record I have used TI, Chromes and Roto flats strung thru body and they were fine, no probs. Also, to stop the string-thru ferrules falling out if you go top load, a wee bit of super glue sorts that one out ;)

I love The Pier gig, it's marvellous. I love the clips on Baby Snakes too. I really must get the Mother Hips album.

I'll check out the Zappateers, sounds interesting :)

Yes, will have to check out the Zappateers too. NEED to hear all of that 84 tour!

One thing though, Scott Thunes doesn't play on the new Mother Hips album (or any of them) as it was recorded a while ago before he joined, although he has been playing it live. He declared this himself on Facebook when everyone was telling him how much they were looking forward to it.

Op - another vote here for Dirty Linen by Fairport Convention. Maybe not your bag but it is a killing bassline.

As you like the Chili Peppers, another cool one would be the instrumental Pretty Little Ditty off Mother's Milk. Would tick a lot of boxes for your GCSE methinks. Good luck!

Lovely interview, thanks for that. I once met Mo at the old Bass Centre in Wapping, a genuinely nice man, great to talk to.

I met him once too when he came to give us a lesson at the M.I. above the old Bass Centre in Wapping ('95 or '96) he was great, showing up at 9am on a freezing morning full of enthusiasm and happy to share his knowledge with us.
He had his trusty P bass and fretless jazz with him.
After he had floored us all with his fretless playing (so melodic, so beautiful - it did sound like singing) I was so amazed that I just blurted out, " OH MY GOD, IT SOUNDS JUST LIKE A KEYBOARD!!" (I was young and had never seen or heard anyone play a fretless in 'real life' never mind a player as accomplished as Mo)
I will never forget the look he gave me. He looked quite miffed and speechless in a 'the youth of today - we're doomed' kind of way. He didn't say a word though and was brilliant for the rest of the lesson.

Sorry about that Mo, and thank you. :)

  6. I know that both Bruce Thomas and Andy Rourke used original pre-CBS Precisions to record with (yes A Rourke also used a Yamaha BB sometimes) so my vote goes to the Fender Original P pickup. Sounds amazing and won't break the bank. Class tone that will make you smile whatever style you're playing.

  7. SOLD ~ TECH 21 SANSAMP BASS DRIVER DI pedal in very good condition. Light useage, home recording mostly plus a couple of gigs.
Not seen any use at all for 18 months since I became a dad again.

*Edit: comes with the original Tech 21 instruction booklet which contains all the great sample settings (SVT, Bassman, Fat tube etc..)

    Cheers,

    Simon.

  8. Kind of an aside but I came across this on the 'tube the other day.
A great live radio broadcast from '71 called "Meddled", hosted by John Peel.
Check it out if you have time..

  9. Live Underslunky is my favourite. Roly was amazing but I do prefer Zia's live interpretations on this album.
A bit faster and better for it imo.
Soundtrack to my misspent youth, saw them live many times in the 90's. Cracking live band :)
Played on the same bill as them at a festival in Cardiff about 6 years ago. They were down to playing as a 4 piece with Ed Wynne's wife on bass. She was pretty awesome too.

  10. The bottom line is that a '60s Jazz can sound like pretty much anything, that's why they're still being played and reissued today.

Good luck finding your sound from it!
    :)

Edit: for a 'general' 60's Jazz tone you could try and cop the bass tone on Lenny Kravitz's debut album.
Ok, of course it's not from the 60's but he certainly did his homework and it works a treat for that vibe.

You can see my P body on this thread in build diaries. Nice grain for alder, top quality wood from Simms. They are great to chat to on the phone too, really helpful. (No affiliation by the way)
