No, just gets your chords down, learn how they cycle and be both creative and musical from the start.
Check out the Carol Kaye method. She's one of the most recorded bassists ever and for good reason.

Yes, a 4005 for around 500 quid would make me a very happy camper indeed.
-
Good luck. Done.

Congrats man, that does sound good for a second practice.
And personally I'm loving the über-grind! -
Brilliant! Thanks for posting that.
I love his basswork on the Doors L.A. Woman album.
He must've reverted to his 'shotgun' approach for the title track though, can't see anyone pumping that for six minutes on just the one finger!
Interesting he used rounds too. I always did wonder. -
If you like Mingus then The Complete Village Vanguard Recordings 1961 by the Bill Evans Trio is a winner.
Scott Lafaro on upright bass, bringing it. Massively. -
Show him this.

Old carpet attached to the walls and floor works well as an insulator, meaning your radiator will be more effective. Helps soundproofing a bit too.
Defo insulate the roof space as a priority. Heat rises and all that. -
Gold hardware on a Stingray looks nice.

Getting stoned off my tits everyday.
Bridge pickups.

I'd start at the Squier Classic Vibe jazz in OW. It may surprise you.

That was great, thanks for posting!
I really love Counterparts as it was the first new Rush album to come out after I had discovered them. Felt like it was 'mine' if you know what I mean.
The stripped back approach worked great ( a perfect situation for the jazz bass to make it's big comeback).
I hope they record like that again one day.

This is the Pink Floyd I love. Rog's tone at around the 11 minute mark is fab.

I have a few irons in the fire but I'm just not feeling it lately. I'd like an upright gig but I don't feel good enough to try joining anyone decent yet. Without sounding like an arse I can play it and I'm sure there are many players gigging on elec bass at a similar standard to my upright standard but its a long way off my normal ability on elec bass if that makes sense?

Best thing you could do mate is find someone decent to play your upright with. Just dive in there, it's the only way to improve really. -

It was extraordinary.
Lovely to meet BC's miles'tone and his friend James, we had a damn good natter and a drinkie, top people! And I bumped into my old drummer, and a geezer from my street
A thoroughly splendid and memorable evening.
Massive orchestra!

It really was mind blowing, what a sound!
Great to meet up with you at last mate - brilliant night!:)

Very interesting!
Would be a shame if they are no longer in business. -

Nice one, good find!
Shame they're not adjustable though, looks like when they're on they stay on.
If you could get the same kind of individual mutes but adjustable like the ones on the older Stingray bridges then I'd have them on in a shot.

Here's the link. -
Been watching some old Led Zep vids today and noticed something interesting which reminded me of this topic being discussed here.
I too always thought JPJ must be mistaken when he said he used Roto rounds even on the earlier tunes, when of course they sound like they're flats...
Check out the beginning of this classic early days Dazed and Confused live vid. You can clearly see the stock Fender foam mutes still in situ on his jazz and they are very much engaged on the strings.
So yeah, looks like the man himself was right all along..
Roto rounds for his preffered faster attack but with foam mutes heavily applied to give that flats-like fundamental and note decay.
Plus he sure is plucking that bass right over the neck as some here previously suggested. Stands to reason he used this set up for what we've all heard on the recordings too I reckon.
Love this vid, John Bonham is amazing here too. -
Moved my reply here to GD as it's probably more appropriate there.
-
Nothing wrong with that, enjoyed it.
Some mates having a blast and playing pretty darn tastily.
No one here ever play a cover version of a song that's not been quite as good as the original or what? -
I reckon he's just being tongue in cheek with it.
There's actually alot of humour going on within Smiths songs that can elude some people. -

Haven't heard that in a while!
That was my take on Carol Kaye who's on the original Lalo Schiffrin version.
We actually recorded it as a performance in the studio and it was quite a blow!

Oh my! "Gary Crockett on bass!" That solo you take on the live version of Yo-Yo is still one of the best I've ever heard. Both melodic AND thunderous. Plus it keeps everyone dancing! (I too saw you live with JTQ many times, best live band in the country then in my opinion)
Bravo, great playing sir
I must check out your post JTQ music immediately!
(I'm a bit slow keeping up with things to be fair)
P bass body

Simms custom shop gets my vote.
I ordered a lightweight alder P bass body from them. It's a cnc clone of a genuine '64 P and my Precision now weighs in at 8.3lbs which my bad back likes alot.
Pricey though as I think it was 240 for the body which was just the bare wood. Another 200 for any colour.
They did have even lighter weight swamp ash at the time too.
I did my body natural myself and boy is it resonant, a pleasure to play even acoustically.
