Interesting rant you have there....especially as one of your "fave bassists" could easily be tagged with the title of "a bassist that pushed boundries"....a certain Mr James Jamerson. His bass lines were (and still are) revered as something that made others take notice of the bass as an instrument in its own right. An instrument that could have its own voice and could play melodies within a song.....just like a lead guitarist and other instruments do.

One of the many bass roles is to keep it all together. Sometimes this requires leading from the front, sometimes more of an accompanying role. I'm lucky that in my band I play a wide range of music that encompasses root / fifth lines along with busy, fast lines that define a track. I think its great that we still have people who are trying to push the boundries, just like Jamerson, Jaco etc. Not all of it is going to work, but maybe something interesting might come out of it.

If Jamerson hadn't "pushed" then we all would have missed out

From what I could see on the Kemper I think you can get them in Rack (just the effects section) or Power Rack (effects and power amp). Also have you looked at the Eventide Eclipse as an alternative?

Even if you knew where I lived in Aberdeen you'd stilll have to get past the dozen or so killer guard haggis I have stationed 24 hours a day out side....

Thanks everyone on the compliments. It's taken a fair few years and lots of overtime to build this little lot up. My wife has not only encouraged me to buy them but in one case (the Ritter) told me I [u]must [/u]buy it!

From the first time I saw a Wal to getting my mits on mine last year was about a 25 year wait......I'm not quite ready to part with it just yet.... ...especially as its got pretty blue LED's! (What is it about techy / geeky bass players and flashy lights? I guess that could be a thread in itself...lol)

For me the next "big thing" doesnt have to be unique, never before seen, but could be the utilisation of technology in a way not fully exploited before or by making it available to a wider (bigger) audience. I know that some of the ideas below have been done before, its just that its usually theres something thats stopped them becoming widespread. Some ideas:

Midi bass / interface that really works and doesnt cost the earth but allows you to use your bass
Setting and saving amp eq to presets for easy re-call
Alternate materials / composites (although I think Status might have been doing something like this for a while )

I remember seeing about 10 years ago in the States, Conklin Groove Tools had their Korean version of the Sidewinder 7 string bass on sale at Guitar Centres. Although not as major a brand as Ibanez, but certainly not boutique.

Looks quite nice. Those dings could be worked on if you really wanted to. Bass Direct have new Kingston Z (lefty) for £800 special price so £400 doesnt seem bad to me. If you got the Ebay one and didnt like it you'd probably get your money back when you sell it

I did think about getting our kick drum skin done but then thought about where most of our gigs are - pubs, where the bass drum is below eye level and hidden behind our singers legs. I went for a banner for behind the band so all the audience could see who we are. Just my 2p worth....

Oooh.....subscribed and looking forward to the next instalments. This is going to be a pair of basses VERY different to normal. You seem to have listed a lot of things people tend not to like on a bass - figured "coffee table" top, single cut, chambered, carved top, headless, wide body, more than 4 strings, F-hole, blue-burst, active elecs.....I love the idea of combining them all

Welcome from another north o' the border! The bass looks a bit like a Hondo II Proffesional that I used to have many, many years ago. Weighed an absolute ton! if you put Hondo II Proffesional into Google you will get some similar images eg:
