I have, but putting your fingers in your ears and going la la la isnt helping my GAS..... Emphatically NO dont get it fretted, but then its your bass so if it'll mean you keep it and use it, and being fretless is the only reason you want to let it go then you have answered your own queery? Surely?
Lol...sorry mate If i thought your bass was my ideal thing i'd snap it up off you!!! I do think it's a bit voodoo, i must admit, but i also think i'd find the dream tone should it grow some metal inserts that we folk call fretwire...mwahahahahahahahahahhahahahhahahahahhahahahhahahaha!!!
As for p/ups, I always liked the old style DiMarzio humbuckers - darker and stronger than trad jazzes, but with a good honk (and no single coil hum). I reckon an Aguilar 2band pre with those would be quite the thing. Trouble is, there isn't much room in a standard jazz bass cavity, so other than a JRetro you're probably going to need at least an extra battery space? Sounds like fun....forget the vintage tone snobs...go for the filth! BB
lol...filthy!!! I like it, a nice mix of the two would be great!!!
So basically the Modern Gospel/Urban Funk tone with the classic growl? Well why not look into Ken Smiths/Roscoes/Sadowskys/MTD's/Skjolds? Or even another F-Bass Jamie?
Yep, that sound my friend. As for your suggestions...The F Basses don't have that sound in my opinion, far too polite. But as i said in my original post, i'd be looking to do up a standard Jazz bass not spend a shed load on a high end bass. As for the Wizards, that's a possibility although i've never played any. Thanks Jamie

Hello guys and girls, I'm thinking about getting a good old 4 string Jazz bass but want to have some rude bass soundage going on. The best way i can describe this is that i've played some active Fenders that sound big but the eq has been unusuable to the greatest extent, but i've played bassed like the Mike Lulls at the Gallery that have quality pickups and pre-amps in that offer a really awesome rude sounding jazz bass!!! I guess it's that nice phat R'n'B/Funk sound, but i'd still like that Jazz bass 'honk'!!! If at all possible, i'd like to keep it down to a 3 knob solution, don't mind stacked ones (like the active jazzes) but i don't want to have to get to trigger happy with the whole making holes thing! A Vol/Vol, Tone/Mid, Bass/Treble set-up would be killer if there is such a thing. Any thoughts? J

Again...huge thanks guys. Some really awesome info coming out here and it's trully helping. I think my problem is simply a lack of experience. I taught when i was younger but didn't continue with it. I'd consider myself competant enough to teach the bass, but lack of experience is certainly an un-nerving hurdle which will only be overcome by gaining experience i guess. I suppose i could liken it to gigging...at one time i had no experience and found it daunting, now i have oooooooddles of experience from acoustic sessions to full on massive stage 1000's of people kind of experience. But it took the first gig which led to the next etc. Thanks again everyone!!!

Matt - that's pricesless thanks mate!!! Seriously great info and insight though my friend!!! I'll take on board what you've said for sure and see if i can incorporate it into what i'll be teaching! Thanks Jamie

That's great stuff thanks man...it all helps!!! I'm getting an idea now, but any other input would be greatfully recieved! Thanks Jamie

Thanks for that kind sir!!! I'll check out the book...i used Dave Overthrow's Bass Methods when learning, i guess i could get involved with them again and see what happened. I do understand that each lesson has to tailored to the student, that's a given, but i still feel as though i need to have to kind of direction/plan and the guide them to the end result. I find it too easy to get confused and lose track otherwise.

Thanks for your reply... But what about teaching from the ery start, how do you approach that? The student may want to learn the latest and greatest bass line but they may not yet know how to play even the simpliest thing...how do you help them get the basics down/what order do you teach them the basics etc?

Hi guys, I'm thinking of starting to get into teaching bass a bit more. I've dabbled before but never really seriously so or anything like that. One thing i've always found hard is what to teach a student, and how to get that across. Do any of you have any advice? I'd be interested to hear how you'd take a complete beginner and the sort of process you'd follow? I've thought about getting a few books to follow, or some of the grade books but didn't know whether thated work or not? Anyway, any thoughts or advice would be really great thanks guys. Jamie

Great bass there my friend... I kinda miss my F Bass, they're wicked...too polite sounding though for me. Mine was the Black Ceruse finish one that Dougal has now. One thing i found with mine is that the pre-amp takes a little getting used to as it's boost only. The Natural tendancy seemed to be to whack everything up, but if you leave it all flat you get the exact same sound as the passive mode, and build from there. You may have already worked that out though How you finding it in the dual coil mode too? You gotta love the tiny mandolin frets too, so smooth!!!!

Hi guys, Considering moving my Marleaux Constat Fretless 5 string on, looking for a trade more so than a sale as i've only got this at the moment. It's an awesome lined fretless from one of the top luthiers around, although i'm sure you all already knew that. TRADED Pics: I've owned it since March 2007 and bought it new at the time. It's in good condition, it has been gigged but it's been looked after throughout it's life. Any questions or trade offers, pm me. Thanks Jamie
