1. just when usung your palm you slightly limit your finger capabilities on the bass, if that makes sense. but i like using the palm as you can control the amount of dampening. so less for the higher notes as there on thinner strings etc
 2.
Piece of p!ss mate. You'll be fine. Personally, I only spend about 3/4 weeks of lessons going through the syllabus for Grade Exams with my pupils (Rockschool or LCM) because really, grade exams are just a limited number of specific hoops to jump through. It won't make you a better bassist if you learn a couple of Rockschool licks... you need to get out and play to get better. So just walk in, ace the exam and have it under your belt and start thinking about being a performing bassist again P.s. It's kinda like you're driving test. You don't really learn to drive until you've passed your test, and you soon realise that the "correct" way to do things (as told by Driving Instructors/Rockschool/Grade exams) is not always the best way in reality and when you realise that, that's when you really start to improve.
Cheers man, the main reason i'm doing it is because my college paid for it!, also, my uni of choice said they want a grade 8! i havent passed my driving test yet!, i hate it. ide never afford a car anayway! haha
 3.
Sorry for being a bit dense.....but. I have seen foam under the strings before, but I dont quite get why someone would do it. I have string mutes on my Ric so would that serve the same purpose?? Why do you gain from the foam or mutes???
You just keep the transient, and loose the rest of the note. in terms of practical use, its can sound nice when you need that, warm upright-ish sound. Also from a producers POV, it changes the mix in a sense. you get more of the note and less of the low FQ hanging around after. but the ric, foam mute are poo pants! and take about 5 mins to set up! haha. best off using your palm. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmfufABDqr4 thats an example, dont slag the person off in the video as its me. haha
 4.
If you are playing a slow ballad and you need to play a semibreve (or two tied together),you don't want the note to die after 3 beats. I'd much rather have an instrument that has good sustain, because I can always mute the strings and make the notes shorter.
What kind of bass, is not capable of that though? i mean surely the cheapest of basses can hold a note for more than 3 beats, or at least a few seconds. i have a £40 bass, and i didn't notice short notes or anything like that.
 5.
In terms of technical ability its not too hard, seems very similar to grade 6 stuff, although as for the rest i cant tell you, i was supposed to take 8, but never did, didnt seem any point, if you want to teach freelance at home / at schools you dont need grades, and if you want to be a teacher at a music academy etc, youll most likely need a degree, which i have opted for. unless by some chance its for... Fun..? in which case technically the tracks are quite, i remember distinctly one having an improvised tapping solo section, great fun... cant tell you much about what the theory knowledge would be like...
hahah yeah fun!, thats pretty much it... in september i am going to uni to do a degree in music anyway so every little helps. Might be cool to have a little bit of a title though, 'hey he's grade 8, that means he's good as stuff' haha.
 6. This is my first rockshcool grade thingy, i was told to do 8, by the bass teacher at college. anyone els done one? how'd they find it? Cheers.
 7.
I started off a keys player & to me sustain is a set level the note will play for until the note is released. Bass guitar notes decay or release, depending on how you look at it. Decay being how quickly a note fades to the sustain level when played (on bass that level is 0 ) & release is how long a note lasts after being released, they don't sustain. However, I think that when someone is referring to the length of sustain in relation to bass, they do mean the decay/release time & I accept it as that. I would like a bass that would hold a sustained note as long as it was fretted, but I believe these are called synths
i'm thinking about penguins! hahah
 8.
.. i do think that a note should sustain, but when do you ever play a note for that long? most basses sustain long enough to make good music..i really dont buy into this 'my bass sustains for days'... who cares
Thank-you! its marketing. simple. plus i think words and there meanings get mixed up a little, 'Harmonics' for example.
 9.
PS "You people"???
Like, you clever people! i'm quite old fashioned as a bass player.
 10. I hear a lot of possible nonsense surrounding the word sustain and its association with the bass. • do brands etc literally mean the note hanging on longer? • I own some expensive basses, and cheap ones. and ive never noticed much difference • I thought, the string type, and set up would have had the most impacts on sustain, ei the lower action allowing the frets the choke the string from vibrating after the transient. • Oh and when do we need to play a note that lasts forever? • maybe its because im not really into 'bass players music' haha i tried a baddass bridge... not really any different to the stock usa bridge. on the note of upgrading bridges. when you loosen string and re-tension them, they sound a little brighter: might have something to the do with the small change in sound, in addition most people time a string change if they upgrade there bridge perhaps?
 11. I have the same as you! Fender jazz, awesome colour looks good with the maple

 19.
Bummer you got a rough one. Most folk who've had HW1's seem to have really liked them. Fender eh . Good luck, Karl.
Must of been the last one at the end of a hard day at work! i sorted out though, in the end it was fine. i do wonder if the really are 'USA made"... oh well! cheers
 20.
It's got a case, which is far from standard. I would personally contact and tell him, "if you ever decide you will accept £420 for it , cash, collected, would you give me a call please"? Probably worth that now I would think. As ever, it's down to how many people looking at it, and how desperate he is to sell. Good luck, Karl.
i think i might wait for a roughed up real USA std, My HW1 jazz, was no better that a squire come to think of it... 4 pieces of odd alder, overhanging frets, and the pick ups were wired back to front.... yeah you heard! terrible! i love the finish though plus the the USA stamp is worth its weight in gold, not like a stamp is heavy;' oh well haha!
 21.
Think the last second hand one in great condition went for £380 on here. Second hand value on Fenders generally does not seem to be keeping up with the big price increase on new ones, that we have seen this year (IMO). Makes 2nd hand even better value. I had a first series Highway 1 and it was probably the best value (and playing! ) USA Fender Jazz I have owned. Good luck whatever. Karl.
http://m.gumtree.com/v?adId=76400224 This is what I was thinking of . Might be a bit high I suppose! Might ask him for a haggle! Ah. Cheers man.
