    I'm out.

My oldest bestie came down to stay yesterday for his annual visit. I don't usually drink at all, but to mark the special occasion we went out for a swift Guinness. Several not so swift hours later we concocted a plan to get an online conga/bass thing happening (he has a studio).

Checking my email this morning, Thomann confirms that last night I did indeed buy a Hofner violin bass (SE Ignition) and a set of pyramid flats.

I'm sure it sounded like a great idea at the time, and you know what? It still does! 😂

    Maybe next year...

Ahh, the devil drink strikes again!  Enjoy the bass :D

  2. What's your beef with basswood? It's not balsa! ;)

Are those tuners small? They're elephant ears, no? When you said "small tuners" I was expecting to see something akin to a Gotoh GB7 type thing with small Y key. You must like 'em BIG if you consider these to be small.

I just scratched my head a lot. You do you, but I'm really confused!

  3. The Cave - a barber shop in Aberdeen. Needed a quick haircut and was looking for a new place as my old one closed.  So I went into their place. Got told by the lady (receptionist?) that it was appointment only. Place was empty. I said I was just wanting a single gauge buzz cut. Lady went to the back shop to speak to the barber. Guy actually looked at me through the open door then shook his head at the lady then disappeared back into the back shop. In full view of me!

Well, F you then, you snobby C!

Went to the place next door to it and got sorted out no bother.

Also Wetherspoons can eat a D. Owner's a knob. Managed to successfully dissuade my staff Christmas night out from going there and go to a nearby establishment instead, and will continue to fight the good fight.

Me and Gibson (USA) are on a long term break...

But, getting back to the original premise, if you had 5k to spend on a bass, would you buy Fender CS or look elsewhere?

You just can't help yourself, can you?  Are you even reading our input, or just using any excuse to berate bolt on construction?  Just rename the thread to "I hate bolt on construction and I think anyone who owns one is an idiot" and be done with it, because that's all I'm getting from this thread now.

    Cool story bro.  I'm out.

I noticed Fender custom shop have announced new models for 2024… if you’ve got £5k to spare you can buy two badly bolted together pieces of wood!

Out of interest, does anyone here think there’s something magical in these custom shop specials? Would you spend 5k on one of these or for that money might it be possible to buy something of better value!

Also, we get it - you don't like bolt on construction.  You're off base with your description though.  I've seen many pieces of wood screwed together with military precision, with lovely recessed screw heads and sculpted heels.  A well done neck join is a joy to behold, regardless of the method.

  6. I just found a font I liked and used that.

It's kinda like the font used on the cover of The Cure's "Wild Mood Swings".  The letters kinda look like they're dancing?  It's ruined now, I've explained it ;)

I agree about the stripes but the set neck join makes upper register playing a joy as opposed to the clumsy restricted bolt on. However, the body is walnut and something my luthier had made ages ago and done nothing with. I got him to put on a mahogany set neck with a ‘62 jazz profile (although compound radius), and the single stripe was a necessary product of its construction. Looks aside it plays like a dream and because of the way it was made only £800! Which is one reason I feel a Fender Custom is not good value.

What you doing up there anyway? ;)

  8. Doing some homework for next rehearsal:

    Blondie, "One Way or Another"

    Hole, "Celebrity Skin"

Garbage, "Only Happy When it Rains"

A rocked up version of "Ring of Fire", kinda like Bowling For Soup perhaps.

And making sure that these haven't trickled out of my brain in the interim:

    Ozzy, "Bark at the Moon"

    Queen, "Tie Your Mother Down"

Cheapskates! The place I worked at the longest gave 5 and 10 year awards, whether there was anything beyond that, I don’t know, no one achieved that during my tenure AFAIR.

Still, useful gear avoidance for you @neepheid. Here’s a thing, what if one entered a competition, where the prize was a bass and you won? I did this and didn’t win, but it did make me wonder.

I would say it's fine. You didn't buy the bass, you bought the potential to win it. Raffle tickets aren't gear, last I checked. I would just say well done and celebrate your good fortune, jealously ;)

  10. I've been at my current employment for a while now, so I had a quick check and I think I've been there 19 years.  Checked to see if there were any perks for that, but thankfully (from a gear abstinence point of view) the first long service award offered is for 25 years, so I'm ok.

Well, I wasn't in, as such.  But, had I been in, I'd now be out as I've just left a deposit with David Konig who is going to put something together for me.  Could be the bass of my dreams - a short scale, lightweight Faker... 😍  3 weeks to go....

OK, enjoy that.  Thanks for highlighting that putting down a deposit for something this year constitutes failure, even if it's not slated to appear this year - that's your get-out for next year.
