In my old function band we used to do a fair few military bases, and ( apart from the hassle of getting through

the guards on the main gates understandably searching the van)  we used to get help unloading and

then loading again at the end of the night. Always well looked after as well, with excellent food, drinks and

    dressing rooms etc.

Played some of the US bases in Suffolk / Eastern England and they were amazingly helpful, plenty of

guys to haul the equipment. Very enthusiastic audiences too, did some great gigs with a country band

in the early 80’s - you only had to ask if there was anyone from any particular US state and

a tray of drinks would appear on the front of the stage. Happy days.

Nice to feel valued, instead of encountering anything from blatant disregard at best to utter contempt and made to feel like a nuisance at worst!

There was one in Liverpool for £100.

now somewhere else in Liverpool for £200.

    there was a 90’s bb350 for £60 today…

I messaged the guy the second I saw it…but it was gone, obviously 😫

Hot damn!  I had a BB350F, total beater, but still a great bass.  Shame I can't play fretless for toffee!

  3. Damn, that does look nice in red.  Oh dear.  Just as well I think they're a mite bit too expensive, even with the addition of a gigbag and other minor improvements, if the price had been the same as the previous Vintage Pro/60s model then my gear abstinence this year might have come under more serious threat...

what difference is this bass to the bb3000? They look the same.

Main difference is that the BB3000 is neck thru, BB414 is bolt on.  The BB3000 generally comes with gold hardware, BB414 is chrome.  There will be hardware differences, tuners, bridge.  Pickups are probably different.

There's plenty of undiscovered electronic music gems from the 80s. That record isn't one of them.

Well maybe one day the music industry will be a meritocracy...

If you need any plastic right angled stuff printed to avoid bashing metal, let me know.

Thanks!  Have to say though, after a Monday at work, bashing the rivets out of the chain with hammer and punch was very satisfying indeed :D

After this, I put up a picture for Mrs. Neepheid.  When you get on a run of practical stuff and the tools are out already...

  7. Design revision required - turns out my velcro is great at keeping pedals in place when gravity is working with it, not so much in the opposite direction.  It was actually the adhesive that failed, not the velcro itself.  Bugger.  So a more permanent way of attaching the PSU is required.

I could replace the tape with... better tape like 3M Dual Lock but I figured in keeping with the whole "make do and mend" approach I'd find a way to mechanically couple the PSU to the board.  Someone on here, I'm sure it was put up a picture of using bike chain links as brackets to attach pedals to boards.  As luck would have it, I had a small length of bike chain lying around so I spent a satisfying 20 mins or so bashing the rivets out of the chain.

Thanks to T-Rex putting all the screws on the side and none on the bottom, I had to bend the links to make right angle brackets.  This is when I found out that the outer links are too brittle to be bent, but the inner ones are fine?  Anyway, some hammering and bending round the vice gave me this:

Now, just need to find some screws small enough to get in those wee holes.  Maybe tuner screws, maybe pickguard screws.  Time for a rummage in the spares boxes!

    Still getting love @neepheid?

Yes, it's currently my office bass because I've been doing some lunchtime swotting - perks of having one's own office.

A couple of the guys in the workshop play bass or guitar and I asked them to tell me how much they thought it cost. They overestimated by several hundred pounds and were blown away when I told them the actual price...

That's not far off actually! This is the guitar:

Etsy's full of them.  I found this one by searching for "mauve guitar strap".  Not sure if this one's a better colour match, but it's not as fancy either.

  10. Something's been bugging me about these - it's the single colour on the headstock.  Should Epiphone have done a trad black headstock with colour outline?  Here's a quick and dirty mockup:

    FIGHT :D

I know Maruszczyk makes 3+1 headstocks, and I'm pretty sure Vintage has, and many others who copied Stingrays (Mayones? Fame?). Why would Sire drop it, while those others didn't? I doubt it would have anything to do with EBMM reaching out and threatening to sue. We've seen other changes to the Sire models after they first appeared on the Sire USA website, like the lower horn on the singlecut model, following comments on forums like this one. The headstock change may also be a response to reactions of potential buyers.

You think any of them A) read what we write and B) pay the slightest heed to it?  Maybe I haven't been screaming into the void all these years! :D

  12. What a surprise, EBMM send in the lawyers.  I don't think they've got a leg to stand on, personally.  They going to come after me if I make a bass which has the tuners in a 3+1 arrangement?

Clearly, they're worried though.  Scared of Sire cannibalising sales because Sire make good instruments.  They've shot themselves in the foot though - all this does is make production more efficient for Sire - one less headstock shape to manufacture.

This kind of anti-competitive nonsense grinds my gears.  F you EBMM, I'm going to buy a Z7 next year out of spite!  Actually, I quite fancy one anyway, but now I've got added incentive.

And not one of them on the settee.  Poor show!  This thread's called "Basses on the settee" not "Basses near the settee" :D

Tonight I'd like to thank Aberdeen City Council for their traffic policies which afforded me the opportunity to carry this lot from the gig venue back to my hotel room in the pissing rain - in two trips. Unable to use my (electric, zero emissions I might add) vehicle because there's no freaking way to get a car anywhere that doesn't involve a bus gate, closed road, one way street or a pedestrian zone. Got back to the hotel just in time for the bar to shut. Absolutely perfect.

    Gig was good though.

Did you not get to use the car park at Drummonds? Admittedly it's not ideal because it's several floors below the bar itself, but at least it's nearby.

  15. Had a great gig with the Inevitable Teaspoons last night at Krakatoa in Aberdeen.  Sound was a bit of a 'mare, we were late starting because the regular sound guy was off ill so it was the venue owner with a newbie assistant trying to chase the bugs out of the system - some annoying feedback coming from somewhere, took a while to track down the offending mic.  But the crowd were patient and they were (hopefully) rewarded with a decent set.  I felt really relaxed in my own performance, the sort of good feeling you get when you can have a laugh with the drummer if either of us does something a little odd instead of worried scowls.  Played my Reverend Triad, and it got some questions (chiefly "what is your bass?" - happy to inform, 'mon the Reverend!).

Rather more bizarre after we finished and I came off stage I got stopped by a guy at the bar who said very nice things about my playing, and paid me the very specific compliment of comparing me to Leland Sklar (!) - and he wasn't talking about my beard because that's a no contest - I'm only similar to Leland Sklar in that respect in the sense that I have a beard at all!  He complimented me specifically on my fingerstyle and was talking himself down because he "only" plays pick.  I was quick to point out that it's just a different technique, neither one is "better" than the other and mentioned that I can't play pick for toffee.

Anyway, was kinda blown away by that very bass-specific compliment that I'm not sure what I did to earn, but I'll bloody well take it!
