This isn’t quite correct or settled but getting there. I do need to fit a Sadowsky Pre/DI on the end as well

not sure if I like the new Diamond more than the IMG_0711.thumb.jpeg.521c78121ff7a93572cf1c258489330d.jpegold one

Looks like you're a bass player after my own heart.

    Lots if lovely looking pedals.

How do you get on with the Boost Chorus?

On stage sound is an interesting topic. At a venue, that I play at regularly with my band, I usually keep my bass amp at quite a low level (I use it just as a monitor as the bass is going through the FOH), as I like to hear the guitarist who is at the other side of the stage. Recently he was particularly quiet for some reason and I asked the sound engineer to put him through my monitor. I could hear him much better but it meant I had to turn up my amp significantly so I could hear myself. His loud guitar and my louder amp gave so much more balls to the onstage sound and we all had a great gig, which was full of onstage energy. The crowd really reacted to us that night and when I asked people, that I knew in the audience, why they enjoyed themselves so much, they said the sound was great (possibly my bass amp was so loud they were hearing that rather than the FOH). So next time I played there I set up the onstage sound just the same, yet again there was a great onstage sound and a lot of onstage energy, and we got the same response from the crowd.

But as you say, I've never had a member of my band ask for any bass in their monitor, even when we've playing on a very large stage where we're playing far away from one another. I think many musicians are afraid to ask for a specific monitor mix and just go with whatever they're given, even if it detracts from the enjoyment of the gig.

So don't take it personally......and next time just take your amp and turn it up :)

I get told to turn it down. The last time I used an amp in that band I literally couldn't hear myself.

I don't get it, you "changed the setup and put everything through the pa" - did you set the levels?  Didn't you just give them some bass anyway then (not in a narcissistic way, just as a start from here kind of thing)?

Sorry I meant I did away with my amp and cab. So if they wanted bass they had to ask for it

  4. How much are you valued by your bandmates? This has been a recurring theme of mine at recent gigs. Last night I changed the set up and put everything through the pa, no backline for me, just a monitor.

The singer gave the sound a big thumbs up in soundcheck, and away we went.

Guess what? Not one member of the band asked for bass in their foldback.

This isn't always the case - some of my bands love the bass, but last night's bunch, not so much.

Audience enjoyed the evening and I got paid.

I'm after a low gain overdrive, not a special effect but an always on pedal to gently warm and break up my clean sound.

I've tried (and liked) several, but get them in a band mix, and they all add an unlooked for 'fizz' to the sound.

This Genzler pedal is the latest in a long line.

Ticks all the boxes: clean mix, controls for amount of drive and level, a switch to increase / decrease drive sensitivity, and four different drive intensities.

But the joker in this already impressive pack is the tone control. Two filters, one high pass, one low pass. Could this be the solution to my fizzy problem?

Well, I'll let you know after the weekend, but the early indications are very promising.

I'm not sure that this comment is entirely fair or helpful? Perhaps it's best not to speculate on "one of these" so publicly - given that this is the only one? I assume you mean commercially available explorer basses. I've never played one of those - so I can't comment on whether the custom bass for sale here is even close to that neck dive, or those dimensions - I wouldn't be surprised if it was very different.

In contrast, I am certainly very happy to comment on neck dive if asked, in the name of transparency and the general good nature of Basschat. And, yes - if you let go of the bass and stand in a T-shape, the neck will dive. HOWEVER, this has never been a problem for me, as my right elbow sits on the lower "horn" all the time - as a coincidental counterweight. That's the natural playing position for the bass, so much so that I had to go and check if this did neck dive - despite owning this for ages. Given that I have a shot left shoulder, and so almost exclusively play short scale basses, neck dive is a real issue for me. I don't have that issue with this bass - it's quite comfortable with my elbow on the lower "horn".

    Happy to answer any queries.

I had no idea my remark was in anything other than a personal observation.  I'll delete the comment .

  7. Private party in a marquee last night. The whole thing overran so the guests were fairly far gone by the time we went on, but we won them round.

I used the Trace Elliot on my Zoom B6 as a preamp DI and it sounded to my ears very nice indeed.

Paid and home just after midnight. Win.

I do hope you eventually finish it.

I'm picking up an HB 5 string with a mashed truss rod nut at the weekend, courtesy of the Recycling thread here. I checked with HB and the nut is welded onto the rod and can't be replaced, so the fretboard will have to come off and a replacement put in.

It's a project for the autumn when the nights draw in and I don't have to water the vegetable patch every evening. And I have saved up to buy the required clamps for gluing it back on again. Seriously,  a dozen more  clamps could cost more than a new bass.😁

I wish you luck. It's actually good fun and if you avoid bring impatient and a fat fingered clutz like me you'll be fine

    Holy Thread Revival @stewblack!!

What was the final outcome of all this?

I am shortly to embark on a similar exercise to replace the truss rod on a cheap bass and I remembered this from lockdown.

I have just re-read the entire thread - but I now I need to know the ending or I won't sleep properly!

    The ending...is pending 🤦‍♂️.

The neck snapped, the new truss rod was too long, I lost heart and put it all away.

    But...

I soaked the split from the inside with super glue before putting it away so it might be stable enough for me to revisit the whole thing
