1.
There are different ways of attacking sweep picking. The Billy Sheehan method is kinda like arepggios where some notes are tapped.I would prefer to call this 'sweep tapping' if anything.. Sweep picking is subtley different. Best way I can describe it is to show you a video:- <a href="http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fusea...iendid=63177036" target="_blank">http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fusea...iendid=63177036</a> My very good mate Andy James on guitar. I have played with him for a few years now and is a monster! 4th video down... you'll see at 42 seconds Andy is reaching across and tapping high notes after picking up an arpeggio, This is similar to the Billy Sheehan method, (except Billy obviously picks with his fingers) now move on to 52-53 seconds, watch Andy's right hand. It 'sweeps' right across the strings in a fluid downward motion. This is sweep picking. Obviously can be up and downstrokes). Go back and watch his left hand, fingering each note of the arpeggio in quick (very) succession. The rest of this vid from 1.39 is flawless shred.. Andy and I have played this song together and he is right on the button everytime! While you're at it have a look at the rest of the vids, as they are littered with bass friendly techniques ;o)
that is incredible!
 2.
I did say only striking one note per string and whilst technically a sweep can only involve two strings, I'd doubt you'd get many NAMM bookings if that's all there was in your repertoire.
hmmm , its one of those techniques that MOSTLY doesnt sound very good - in that video above , sure it looks flash but i dont think it sounds very good. Suppose its great for solo bass though
 3.
You'd better be really, really, really, really good before you even contemplate a technique like that live. I've also seen bass players using that techniquelive and the topic of conversation amongst the audience quickly changed from comments about the band to a discussion of whether said bass player was born out of wedlock.
yeah , from what i can see it must take at least a year to be "good" at it to master , a lifetime maybe
 4.
Billy Sheehan demonstrates his version of sweep picking on his Bass Secrets vid- turn your hand more parallel to the strings, pick each string with each finger (using 3 fingers, and you could add your thumb and little finger- I think Abe Laboriel does this, maybe Matt Garrison, Wooten etc. too) going from low to high, and then you can tap high notes as well to extend the range of the sweep.
ah right , ok
 5.
What is sweep picking?
its when you would strum all/some strings of the guitar once but hammering on very quickly on the fretboard , its supposed to be the key to fast playing in bands such as dragonforce at least , thats what i think it is
 6.
guess what- Billy Sheehan does that a lot he says it has an advantage for getting certain harmonics because your fingers flatten out more, but it seems more like a visual prop. once I saw a bassist do this at a gig, but he was just playing root notes on the E-string
billy sheenan , wow tbh i doubt it does help with harmonics , otherwise jaco pastorious would of figured it out much much quicker lol root notes , even i can do that
 7.
Um, I think you'll find it's a 4-string with 3 courses of strings, one fundamental and two octave. Like an 8-string but with more top end. At least that's what most 12-strings are. <google> Aha, here we are. Dean Rhapsody on the 12-string-bass website. Must admit to being a bit tempted by an 8-string - I've played a few but I'm not sure I'd really make much use of one. Most octave pedals won't emulate them properly as they generally go an octave (or two) down, not up.
oh yea lol
 8. firstly , is it possible to sweep pick on a bass? im sure it is but ive never seen or met anyone who can do it... then theres the issue of being a fussy bass player , not wanting to use a pic , is it possible to sweep pick using a relative fingering technique?
 9. ive recently seen a clip of the great guitarist michael angelo batio he has a technique called over under , you play one note normal and the other , you wrap your hand round the other side of the fretboard and play the note from above really clever , but a bit posey no? im beginning to learn this technique , has anyone already mastered it?
 10. i know , the king of cheese... its a 12 string bass , just a 6 string with 2 strings together for each note i recently saw it on the web and i wondered how would you tune the 2nd string to each 1st string? would the ow B have an octave above or below? more importantly , HOW would u restring the bugger? what wound would you use?
 11.
my lbm certainly does
thank goodness thanks guys
 12.
Heavy, and I imagine it's a pain to restring. Chris Squire has a triple-neck bass, a copy of a Wal original that now lives in Hard Rock Cafes.
owies!
 13.
it's a similar distortion sound, deffinitely no loss of low end, with an octave up option.
oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo nice! thanks
 14.
get a danelectro french toast IMO
what effect is that? lol
 15.
It depends what you mean by "good" - can you be a little bit more specific?
ah yeah , sorry lol is the little big muff pedal ok its a distortion/fuzz pedal the probs i get with distortion is that the fuzz takes all the bass away does this pedal keep the sound bassy?
 16. Ive recently seen a double headed bass its the same effect as a double headed guitar right? it was 6 on the bottom and 12 on the top felt sorry for the guy , it was a solid body and must of been so heavy
 17.
I've just had my Warwick sprayed with Lamboughini Muckylargo orange, supplied by car paint suppliers and applied by a luthier.
my friend had a bogey green bass guitar which he bought on e bay for about £40. it was a westfield 5 string or something... he sprayed it black with a green line down the fretboard. Really nice tbh i dont think you should spray it... there are more wacky ideas ... Syd Barret from pink floyd stuck broken mirrors to his guitar... you could just wear a green suit instead? =D
 18. Zita says hi ive been recommended to get a little big muff pedal but im not sure if electro harmonix are any good. My friend you see has a holy grail reverb pedal and i didn't think it was any good :S are electro harmonix any good? w/b cheers x from zita you lucky devil :S lol
 19.
As everyone else has said you must give a Ric a good bashing before you go for it I've got a 4003 and a Fender P and find myself swaying between the two YES the Ric is the coolest bass in the world BUT the neck and sound wont suit everyone also the lack of body contour can be quite uncomfortable on the right forearm
mmmmmm i think the only problem with it is as i fingerpick the pickup is too low for me to keep my thumb comfortable but i think that if i can learn to cope with it , then no bass should be a problem
 20.
IF you like Burton's tone, dont forget that pretty much after the first album he put the rickenbacker into retirement. If you watch cliff em all you'll see a couple solo's on the ricky and it sounds alright but nothing compared to the solo on the more modern basses. Also I can tell you now.. they are hard work to play. But then again they are insanely coooooooool. Its your choice, but make sure its the right one.
yeah but he only used alembic spoiler or an aria forester not a big fan of aria alembics are too classy for a lovable rogue like me and besides , Cliff used a 4001 the 4003 has improved
 21.
Cris, Only you know the answer to that!!!!! Old Horse Murphy just bought a 25 yr old Ric for £1600 and that was really cheap (for what it is). If you can affford it and it does what you want, then yes its worth it..... Are there other less expensive basses that can achieve what the Ric can.....? YEP! Search your soul and wallet and you'll find the answer...... Oh and BTW those guys dont get that sound just with the Ric, they have very accomplished backlines as well... (probably custom made for them by their endorsers!)....
ah right cleverclogs
 22.
I think they are defo worth it but i would say that cause i have one! I get a great growling tone from mine but you do have to muck around with EQ to get it bassy and ballsy enough for heavy stuff. i got mine for just over £800.
if your bass was single i would marry it
 23. a Rickenbaker 4003 bass ive seen people such as lemmy of motorhead and cliff burton of metallica use them and the tone they seem to get is immense is it really worth £1000 though?
 24.
I used to think that re-stringing a bass was hard work - Until I got a guitar with a floyd rose! Which string did you break?
G - 65w
 25. MAN! its the worst job ever i broke a string while restringing , and theese strings cost me £70 altogether , i got myself 2 packs of elites - 6 string sets from 130 - 30 and 2 4 string sets , heavy gauge 110 to 55 what are the best strings? the best ones for slap bass the best for a huge sound the best overall
