1. May consider an decent offer bump.
2. Had a couple of questions: Q: Does it come with a case? No Q: Can it be delivered? I would prefer a pick up but will deliver if the cost of the deliver is added to the final price.
3. I'm reluctantly selling my Spector bass for finanicial reasons. I have had it about a year and I obtained it from another basschatter who had it from new. I straight swapped it for a fender jazz. To buy this bass from new would cost around £1900 at the moment. Its in good condition. A few very minor dings and some wearing around the pick up (pictured). I've lifted the following specs from the spector website. If you're interested please send me a PM or an email to [email protected]
4. Just wanted to say thanks again to everyone who commented and PM'd me about this. You've really made my life a lot easier.
5. I'm really doing it for the experience as I'd like to get into musical theatre so it'll be great for the cv. I was hoping for a reading gig as its something I've never done before but it looks like I'll be transcribing which should take me a couple of weeks. It's a bit unorganised to say the least. I'm liking some of the music but I can't say the same for the subject matter, it's not the most enjoyable musical for an atheist however I'm thinking that taking a job I'm not into is also good practise. Thanks for the comments.
6. I've been asked to play in the musical god spell by a local theatre group. All I've been given is a set of MP3s to listen to and transcribe. I just wondered if anyone has played in this before and had any sheet music for it? or if not just any tips? Thanks.
7.
Hardly very clever to point out the contradiction in your post when you said that a) you have nice gear and -b- materialism is a bad thing. (Irony mode on) we all individually apparently have appropriate gear it's just the other clowns who have gear that is beyond their ability to appreciate, and they'd be better off spending their money on lessons, or new ears, self improvement/pleasuring or whatever.... (Irony mode off)..
I get that owning an instrument is technically materialistic but that wasn't my point. I was just saying that the focus on buying rucks of expensive gear instead of self improvement etc isnt the way forward. Like I said though, each to their own.
8.
See highlights below.. Materialism is materialism whether you discuss it or not surely?
Yes very clever but if I didn't own a bass I wouldn't be on here at all would I?
9.
I've noticed a couple of posts lately which,to me,give the impression that there are some people who feel that gear is an important part of improvement as a player or more important than the player themselves. It's not just limited to this site or bass players in general...I've seen it with a lot of drummers and guitar players too. I love gear as much as anyone but I feel that the gear is somewhat secondary to the player and that everyone would benefit so much more from spending money and time on lessons and practice rather than spending thousands on gear. I understand that some people are collectors of instruments but I'm guessing that the vast majority of people on here are more than that.
Spot on. I've not been on here long but I have noticed a huge interest in gear and little interest in self improvement. It seems that the theory and technique section sometimes goes for ages without being touched. I'm always on the look out for worthwhile information being posted but have to trawl through pages of people showing off the gear they own or want to own. I own some nice stuff myself but I don't feel the need to discuss it on here at all. Each to their own I guess but materialism is a bad thing in my opinion.
10.
Just a question - how do you know if you are good enough to join a band? Obv a bit of a wide open Q, but not having played in one before and keen to get "out there", are a few dozen songs enough, or do you need to be able to busk along or similar?
I found, when I was starting out, that as a bass player you can keep it very simple and play along-side better musicians. You can try new things now and again and build up your confidence slowly. I think essentially all you need is to do is be able to stay in time and hit root notes at first so practising with a metronome will help. Just don't join a weather report tribute band.

12. Excellent post. I am experiencing similar frustrations at the moment. I've nailed the pitches and can sight read them with a basic rhythm at speed but as soon as they get even slightly complex I'm lost and have to stop and "work them out". I will use the advice given above as it is clear from this, that I am trying to run before I'm able to walk. Much appreciated. Dave
13. Cheers for all the feedback. That should give me enough to go at.
14. How do you people usually seek out a band to join? I have always done it through a recommendation or friends but I've found myself in the position of seeking a regularly gigging professional covers band but without any idea where to start. Are there any good websites or publications I should know about? I'd be interested in peoples stories or advice on this subject. Cheers Dave
15.
Dear God, I do hope so!! He has one hell of a "poker face", that is for sure!
I'm not sure I'd find it funny if it was a joke..... its side splittingly funny if its genuine.
16. http://ryan-larson.com/ I can't work out if he is taking the piss or not. Someone help.
17. Its about 10 years old and sounds pretty massive. Quite a few dings and cracks but still looks and plays great (just had a new jack socket and a set up). I love this bass but I want to move on to a 5 or 6 string (want a C string) of similar spec (Warwick, Spector or something of that ilk). I live in Manchester but I can travel if necessary. I'll get some pictures up here asap. Probably in a couple of days. PM me if you're interested.
18.
yeah, yeah, but???? would you pay/want to see them at Glastonbury? now! really!!!
They're playing on one of the smaller stages half way through the day. As there are over 50 stages at glastonbury I don't think it has an impact on anyone's decision to buy a ticket. I'm more bothered about the likes of Tony Temper on the main stage. I'll probably be over at the jazz and blues tent I reckon.
19. I wish I was a Christian so I could play in church. I bet it's like that scene from blues brothers with James brown.
20. I was at a friends house and I tried his bass out. I was amazed that I could play it almost straight away as I have never been successful at anything before (sport/instrument/hobby). I asked for one that Xmas and although my parents were pessimistic they fully supported me and paid for lessons. I've never looked back and will one day i hope to play professionally.
21. I can recommend Scott Devine. Excellent teacher and has a Website with loads of free video lessons. Google him.
