I know there is probably no answer to this but here goes. How can I overcome nervousness. I am new to the bass and at the moment only play to myself in front of the computer, but the minute anyone comes into the room to watch I go to pieces. In my day job I have meetings in top boardrooms, meet and have discussions with all types of people including top celebs etc. and have no problem at all, but the minute I pick up the guitar................. Why is this?
It's just practice and confidence. The more you play in front of people, the less you'll care what they think. Perhaps playing with a band will help, do you have any like-minded musical friends? The great thing about being a bass player is that when you gig the only people who watch you are the other bass players!

I've not really listened to much Steely Dan but this song just blows me away. Does anyone have any tab for it (yes yes I can't read sheets yet..)? Any similar songs anyone can recommend?
Frankly, I'm amazed that nobody wants the Hohner. I have one that I use in preference to my Fender, as it is just so versatile. A brilliant recording bass.
You have an Arbor? What colour's yours? Do you have any information on them? I have flats on mine at the moment and it sounds awesome.

Pain of Salvation: Rope Ends. Can't get it out of my head. Round and round it goes. Also the entirety of the new Blind Guardian album. Outstanding, especially Wheel of Time.
I guess some people are just into the gear side of things, but great musicians can astound on any instrument.
+ the 1

My art teacher told me after GCSE "There's no point you doing art A-Level, you'd be no good at it", and I believed her. I'm so angry now though, I'm actually quite good and I think I could have been so much better. Never tell someone they can't do something, even that guy with one arm on youtube plays bass really well.

Right then, made contact with Bass_guardian regarding his Yamaha RBX a2 (now mine, I might add) and he was more than helpful. We sent messages back and forth, exchanged texts and when I decided to buy it he was very quick to provide contact details and to put my mind at ease. Payment was made Monday night, and he got the bass in the post yesterday at 4pm. Arrived this morning in Oxford at about 9:20 all the way from Scotland. Bass was very well packed in its case (it took me about 10 minutes to get through all the paper and bubble wrap). The bass itself was also wrapped, with the strings downtuned. I don't have an amp here at work but the bass looks in great condition and exactly as he showed it. Good lad, thanks again!

I completely agree with you about Incubus, once Dirk was gone they got very boring indeed.. -

Hopefully getting in a new bass in the week so I thought it was about time I got rid of some that were just sitting there. First up: Aria Electro-Acoustic fretless bass. I've played it maybe 10 times in the few years I've had it, it plays fine but I just can't be dealing with fretless. As I understand it this is slightly unusual; I've not seen any other ones that are fretless. Good condition, no dings or scratches, electronics work fine. Comes with a padded gigbag. £130 No longer on hold. Taking offers on both of these now. As I said, I just want to get rid of them so I'll probably consider any serious offers. With regards to posting, I'd rather not have to, but if you're in/near Oxford then you're more than welcome to come try them. I can come meet you halfway if you're not too far away.

I was in the pub a few weeks ago and got chatting to a guy who would from time to time, just bust out a harmonica and play some music along with the jukebox in the background. He was damn good and we got chatting about music (don't we ALL want to be good at harmonica?) and he was very interested when he found out I was a bass player. He asked me "Have you strengthened your fingertips?" and I said that they were quite strong from years of playing. He pulled me in closer and said: "Dip them in piss" "Hahaha.....wait, what..?" "No really, I don't mean whack it out now and spray all over your hands" "Right..." "But if you got a bowl, get some urine in it and dip your fingertips in, the ammonia dries out and the tips get hard". Has anyone EVER heard this before? I'm pretty sure he wasn't winding me up as we were chatting for ages and he was convinced it would work..

Ishibashi Music is going to sell musical instruments to oversea again
Jam replied to basskiller's topic in General Discussion
I bought a bass from Ishibashi when I lived in Japan, excellent service. If anyone has any questions or things that they fancy translating PM me, am a Japanese speaker/freelance translator. -
Quick update, the heavier strings sounded great and I could hear myself over the guitar! Success! Next step is some sort of pedal/sansamp to boost my sound. Cheers for the help guys!
Is there much point caring about a heavy metal bass tone? In most cases we're drowned out by the 'wall of death'... sorry.. 'noise' produced by 2 guitarists fretw**king all over the place and blasting people's eardrums. lol PS: I'm joking +1 on the heavier gauge strings, getting a 5er and pedals tho. Might want to look at getting a 1x15 somewhere in your setup too to drive the bottom end and compete with the downtuned guitars.
Hahaha I'm pretty lucky with the guitarist, he's loud but there's only one of them! Gives me a lot of room to manoeuvre and do my own thing, but he likes to downtune. I have a boss something or other pedal with lots of effects built in, perhaps I'll drag it out and have an experiment. My band's sort of thrash/power metal, but I'd love a bass tone like Billy Gould!
