1. Cheers bud!
  2. Haha, that's quite a hard sell there! Ebay aside, can you recommend stuff to play on it?
  3.
Yes you can, in fact you can get my one on ebay right now if you want =] <a href="http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190173203693" target="_blank">http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=190173203693</a>
A nice bit of sneaky plugging there! Tempting, though I should probably get to grips with the 4 string first..
  4. Also, anyone else have one of these or have any idea how much it's worth?
  5.
Trad. folk with an uprighty vibe. Try experimenting with different sounds by really digging into the strings.
Any band/song recommendations?
  6. I picked up an Aria electro-acoustic fretless bass from a cash converters/pawn shop type place a while back for about £100, and I played it a few times, but then went to Japan for a year and haven't touched it. Now I'm back i've dug it out and I'm playing around with it, and I was wondering if you guys and gals had any songs you'd recommend for an acoustic? Also, fretless is a bit of a nightmare but it sounds gorgeous,. and I think I'll get to grips with it eventually. Any recommendations? Let me see if i can find some pictures. Aha, got one: Cheers! Jam

Welcome buddy, you'll find lots of nice, helpful people here. Have fun!
  8. Hey buddy, welcome. Let's hear about your equipment!
  9. chippewabill (5 days ago) Flea, you keep on suprising me man, Les Claypool has nothing on you man!! Iwanttobestevenfry (5 days ago) how the fcuk does he a) manage to do it in the first place and keep it sounding so tight for so long! best bass player around, no question I love youtube. Some people have no idea about bass. He's the best bass player around? Better than Claypool? Debatable..
  10. So today I went to a jazz night at one of the pubs down the road and I was really inspired by the double bass player to come home and play some jazzy stuff. The only problem is, I have no idea where to start. I'm not committed enough that I want to buy an upright bass but I want to use some of the ideas and shapes etc that an upright player would use. Can anyone recommend any jazz stuff for electric bass? Not including Jaco, while I respect his stuff i'm nowhere near good enough.. While i'm at it, can anyone recommend any good jazz? I want to get into it but whenever I search for jazz all that seems to come up is the minimalist, weird sounding stuff, whereas I mean the more "conventional" style, if you catch my drift.
If you're more interested in slower/chordy stuff because the composition is stronger than in a slap-hammer-pop fest (not that there's anything 'wrong' with those every now and then), consider arranging existing songs on the bass. ie not just bass-only material. They don't have to be difficult/fiddly to be effective. But then that's more about playing music, not just about playing bass!
Sounds like good advice. I'm going to go find some stuff and try and get playing it on bass.

  13. This is probably as good a place to ask as any; I bought a Hohner bass for £50 about 3 years ago, and the bloke who wanted rid of it said it was from the 80s sometime. It's a "Hohner Arbor MX1". I've searched the net and even emailed Hohner's main offices (In german, I might add) but nothing's turned up. Anyone heard of them/own one? It's not a bad bass, especially not for the price. Feels like it's lead-lined though, very heavy. Nice neck and beautiful finish on the body. Only thing is, it doesn't sound too good for slap, so i've stuck some roundwounds on it, and a sponge up towards the bridge and it sounds pretty awesome. I dunno if this will work, but it's a picture of me playing it: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?act=attach...ost&id=2460

Is that a 10 string? I don't think i'd be able to get my hands on one of them on a student budget! Are they hard to play?

I sound so ignorant! Let me correct myself, lest I get flamed! I didn't word myself very well in my last post. It's not that I find Wooten and Pastorius dull, far from it. It's just that I prefer the slower, chordy stuff. I respect Wooten and Pastorius highly, I tried to learn Teen town the other week and gave up. I won't be able to play like that for a long time...
Colin Hodgkinson has a slightly different slant on the solo bass idea (the clip gets going about 1' 30" in)
Thanks man! Good stuff...never heard of him before you mentioned him. So many talented people out there i've not heard of.
  18. So i've been looking for new stuff to play on the bass, and i'd like to get into more stuff like Stu Hamm. However, I don't know of any other artists like him, and while I respect people like Pastorius and Wooten, I find their playing quite dull. Can anyone recommend any artists who play solo bass and don't shred?
  19. Hey hey, welcome!
  20. That's awesome man, good work!
  21.
Possibly, but we'd definitely be weirded-out if you posted here to tell us.
Complaining from beyond the grave...
  22.
lol... cute. If you have been electrocuted, I'm afraid you are very dead, by definition ;o) um.. my advice.. Don't eat yellow snow. lol.. Cheers Mr Zappa.
Fine fine! I recieved a slight electric shock. Happy now?! My god would you feel guilty if i'd actually died.
  23. Don't use a laptop while playing bass. I use guitar pro and youtube while i'm playing to work on things or to play along, and I just electrocuted myself slightly. I had one hand on the strings and the other on my laptop. Has anyone ever died through being electrocuted by a bass/guitar? I don't necessarily mean a laptop, maybe a mic would do the same if it wasn't earthed properly...
  24.
You're very welcome to use the search engine - top right corner?
Aha! Sorry buddy, didn't see that. I'll be sure to make use of it in the future! Also: "If it's in a guitar shop, I normally can't remember a single one!" Why does this always happen!?
  25. I'm sure there's already a thread on this somewhere but i don't know where and i'll be damned if i'm trawling 35 pages of posts to check! So yeah, when you try out a bass for the first time, or pick one up to play with, do you have any songs you always play? Usually I play Aeroplane (yes I know, cliche, but it's a fun line), and Jamiroquai's Cosmic Girl for fingerstyle, with some Opeth stuff (usually Bleak) just to try out the heavier side of things.. How about you guys? Any songs you always play? I suppose the reason i'm asking this is to kinda broaden my knowledge so I can look up some of the songs you guys love to play and try them out myself!
