1. Afternoon folks,

MXR M-288 Bass Octave Deluxe:
This was bought for an Electronica project that never quite got off the ground.
Was using this with my M-82 Envelope Filter & ODB-3 for synth sounds to rather good effect. :)
Excellent piece of kit that unfortunately doesn't get the use it deserves.
Very clean, boxed and paperwork present but one screw missing from underside (see pics)
£85 inc UK Mainland postage (recorded delivery)

No trades please and payment by bank transfer only.

Cheers,
Ian

Hi folks,

Here we have a Rickenbacker 4001 from 1978 for sale on behalf of my friend. He's asking £1250 but I'm sure he'll be open to sensible offers. :)
As the instrument isn't mine I asked him for a little bit of info so here's what he's given me:

1978 Jetglo Rickenbacker 4001 stereo bass.
Original and carries its age well with the expected signs of character on this classic instrument.
Comes with an equally aged hard case.
Bass needs a good home and would benefit from new strings and set up although it has been rarely gigged since 2004.
Asking for £1250.
Email address - "][email protected]

Bass is located in Edinburgh if you want to view or if you need any further info regarding the instrument please contact Mike at the email address provided above.
All payment/collection/shipping details to be agreed between buyer & seller.
Again if you have any queries regarding payment/collection/shipping you should e-mail Mike directly.

Thanks for looking folks.

Last Saturday I used the CMI Ned Callan, 1971 vintage. One pickup, one vol, one tone, a ton of mahogany (body AND neck!) and a few steel bits. Nothing that could go wrong, so no backup or anything.

If you're talking about fear of it getting nicked, well you've got a point. gotta be double careful and don't leave anything lying around...
God damn it sounded epic as well!

I use my custom fretless quite a lot - is '88 classed as vintage?

4. Well I raised the action and adjusted the intonation on my fretted jazz bass for rehearsal on Sun (as suggested by pantherairsoft) but it still has the same issues so I'm going along to Guitar Guitar with it (my fretted jazz) to see if there's an issue with their new one. If there is, then it's a bass set-up issue I'd guess.

@ dr Szelma: Yes I completely agree with you about this pedal being fantastic.
As I said I A/B'd it against an Aguilar Octamizer & the OC3 and it's way better than the Octamizer and just destroyed the OC3. I'll try the order you suggest and see if that makes any difference.
(Always looking for help on which pedal should go where :))

@ soldersqueeze: I'm using the TU3 to power all the pedals via daisy-chain but I'll swap round the pedals so the OC is at the head of the signal chain to avoid any confusion that may be generated by the EF.

Many thanks once again folks :)

5. Sorry folks, the new site wont let me multi-quote for some reason so I'll have to do it this way I'm afraid:

@ BigBassBob: Cheers for that mate, this sounds like the type of thing I'm experiencing but I've never actually paid attention to how far up the neck on the G string it goes. Most definately worth investigating though. Again the OP mentions the possibility of a defective pedal but I'll certainly check it out once I get home after work.

@ pantherairsoft: I do play mostly with the bridge pup on full and neck pup off with the treble rolled off slightly and I have my action pretty low but not to the point where it's causing any noticable buzzez or rattles.
I'll try raising the action and adding some neck pup to see if that helps but I honestly think it's an issue with the unit itself.

@ cheddatom: Yeah it totally sorts itself out after about 10 mins and this is a reasonably recent issue as well as I never used to have any problems with it.

I assumed that as the pedal was:
1) second-hand and
2) has a £199.00 price tag on the box that it was an older model and perhaps prone to being a bit twitchy?

I tried one at Guitar Guitar (I took my own fretless along as they seldom have fretless basses there and this is the bass I play it through most often) against a Boss OC3 and an Aguilar Octamizer before I bought it and it just blew the other two out the water and there was no tracking issues with the 'new' one on my fretless.

@ Rumple: yep, tried it with three different basses - two fretless (one is active) and a passive fretted - and still have the same problem.
The thing is it clears up after a period of time so I'm assuming there may be a problem with the pedal?

I'll try raising the action as pantherairsoft suggests to see if that helps any and I'll report back.

Many thanks for all the advice folks :)

6. As Bloodaxe says 'get out there with other musicians'.

I was lucky enough to be in a bar this evening that had an impromptu blues jam going on. Basically a three piece outfit with the drunner leading but they were asking for other players, be you a drummer, guitarist or a bass player, so I volunteered.

There were a few other musicians went up before me (including a bass player who slapped for two blues tracks!) and I have to say that the quality of playing from the other muso's who did a stint was really good, and the 'house' guys were effing tight! I have to be honest I was bloody nervous when it came to my turn!

I'd never played with these guys before, let alone met them and had a chat about what they might play, but they were really cool. I was introduced to the guitarist who gave me the key and we went from there.

I'm far from the best bass player in the world, and I made a few clangers during my half hour stint, but th fact is I threw caution to the wind and said 'Hey guys, I play bass. Gime a shot'

In my expreience, and people may have different opinions, the best way to learn is by going and doing.

Get out there and play with other folks. It may seem daunting at first but nothing ventured, nothing gained. And that includes f**king up. We've all done it! :)

7. Evening (or should I say 'morning') BC'ers,

I have a rather odd thing happening with my MXR octave pedal. I was always under the impression that OC pedals would lose tracking at the lower register as opposed to the higher but mine seems to hate anything I play on the G string until it kinda 'warms up' after about 10 mins then it's fine.

I can easilly get down to low G on the E string without issue but when I plug everything in then start widdling (as one does) it refuses to track anything I play on the G string. I can play the same notes on the D without issue but if I try the higher string I get a complete breakup until it seems to settle in after about 10mins.

It was bought second hand from a member here, and I need to make it clear that I'm in no way suggesting the member is at fault for selling me dodgy goods, but it has a pricetag on the box of £199.00 from 'Kenny's Music'. I have no idea where 'Kenny's Music' is but I'm assuming that these units have been around for a while considering the £199.00 price tag and that I may have one of the early units.

Anyone else came across this?

Signal:
USA75RI Jazz > Boss TU3 > Dunlop Bass Wah > MXR Bass Envelope Filter > MXR Bass Octave Deluxe > Boss OBD3 > Amp

Even using the OC on its own I still get the problem.

Any help would be appreciated :)

8. Hi,

Attempting to edit an ad I have in the 'Amps & Cabs For Sale' section and am having no luck.
When I attempt to save the changes I'm presented with an IE Error box - [item error]
I've tried to use the full editor as well but nothing happens when I click on this.
Currently using IE 6 at work.
Any ideas?

Ian

9. Hi all,

At work I like to browse the site from time to time during the day (as one does :))
a: to keep up-to-date with what's going on in the world of BC (like this new look for example)
b: to relieve the tedium of being stuck in an office for 8 hours and
c: to check out the BC marketplace

While at work I tried to send a PM to a member today on three separate occasions but failed each time.
Going by what I could figure out you hover the cursor over the person’s ID, you’re then presented with a couple of options, one being ‘Send Message’, so you click on this and I assume are presented with a PM box? The first two parts are fine but when I click on the ‘Send Message’ option nothing happens.
I can only assume it has something to do with the New-Look site coupled with fact we're eons behind everyone else in terms of browsers and are still using outdated IE6.

Prior to the update I never had any problems while at work so can anyone confirm that IE6 is no longer supported or could the problem lie elsewhere?

Cheers,
Ian

10. I bought one of these off e-bay a while back and yes, it was complete 'stool' in every respect.
The tracking was just woeful if you played anything but one sustained note.
I ended up PX-ing it along with a Boss AW-3 (which was also rubbish) against an MXR M82.
Along with Mr. Academy I'm interested in trying one of those MarkBass Synths too.

11. I spent £1000 on my '75 RI Jazz a couple of years ago and I had Chris Larkin build me a fretless 4 in 1989 which cost me in the region of a grand. Not sure what that equates to in today's money but it'd be more than £1600.

I want a '69 Jazz (my birth year) and all depending on the condition of it, I suppose I'd be willing to pay up to somewhere in the region of £3k

12. Yes & no!
I have three fretless - a custom Larkin Reacter 4B I had built in 1989 (my avatar) which doesn't get nearly as much use as it used to or ought to, a modified Squier VM fretless that gets played constantly and a cheap crappy Stagg BC300FL I bought on a whim for £60 that never gets used. Ever! :)
As for an acoustic, I'd love one but don't have the money to spend on a decent one.

:)

13. He's gone and put the wrong pics up on his ad. :)
Here's the same pics on a different auction he has:

14. Sounds like an epic trip you have planned there!
As you're gona be crossing the States I can't urge you enough to go check out the Southern States especially Virginia, Carolinas, Tennessee, Kentucky & Georgia. First time I went over in 2008 I fell in love with the people and the place (I was given the title of 'Honorary Redneck' and a John Deere cap hence the name JohnDeereJack!)
When I was over I bought a cheap acoustic guitar just for sitting in jam sessions (there are PLENTY around) and something called a GripMaster to keep my fingers limber for the almost four weeks I was without a bass.

They come in different strengths and I seriously can't extoll the virtues of these devices enough.

Unfortunately I'm not gona make the States this year but enjoy your trip mate, I'm totally jealous. :)
