1. Hey there,
I've got a 33" Shuker 6 string with a Low B and have no problems with it whatsoever.
It doesn't have any additional tweaks to achieve extra tightness on the low B, it'll never be as good as the one on a Dingwall bass, with it's 37" scale on the B string, but it's just fine for me.
You can hear it here on this wee sound sample >> http://www.shukerguitars.co.uk/03SlapandFingerFunk.mp3
I use the low B string about half way through and it was recorded direct without any other tweaking, bar a little from the onboard EQ.
The main critical thing that I think contributes is a brass nut and a decent break angle across it.
I'll have at the Scotland/North England Bass Bash in Moffat if anyone fancies a go...

My bass is a bolt on single cut and I've been talking to some folks about a low B on 30" scale, including Jim T on TalkBass
Here's his bass, hope he doesn't mind me sharing the pic.

Jim is convinced that having the bass as rigid as possible helps a lot with the low B on his 30" scale, so neck through construction using rock 'ard woods, and the single cut design to a certain degree, will contribute to this.
As far as I'm aware, extended peg heads and stringing through body can't really do much with the note itself, as the speaking length of the string runs from where it leaves the bridge to where it hits the nut, however I guess the extended B headstock would let you use a long scale B string giving you more options without going custom for yer strings.

Hope that's enough info for you to get started, if you have any other questions though dude, just shoot.

Cheers,
Eude

2. I'm in Alan,
should be able to make either date too.
I'm happy to give lifts from Edinburgh, but I'll be bringing gear and my car ain't huge...

Also, would there be any merit in me bringing along a wee PA?
I'm up for it and can offer a lift to South Cumbrian folk.

Peter
Excellent, can't wait to see your Harlot in the flesh! - Wow that sounds inappropriate!

Cheers,
Eude

3.
Heh, yeah that'll look the dog's danglies. All you need now are black anodised frets... ;)
Can you get them?!...

4.
mmmm ... think I'll order me one of those but fretless, unlined, and strung with LaBella black nylon tapes ;)

Andy
Ha, yeah I was thinking of ordering up some of those DR Black Beauty Strings to complete the look...

5.
What it does show as well is the links that Alan has with his suppliers. This not only means great materials and hardware, but bespoke pickups and preamp as well. Couple the background work that makes these elements available with Alan's ever-increasing skills as a luthier makes something that defines ACG basses....

...and in the bass world getting your own definable character is a difficult thing to do.
Well put mate!
It's getting closer to my pay review with work, so finger crossed I might have myself a wee ACG in the works soon.

I noticed that you have exposed cores on some of your lower strings, how does that effect the open string?

Oh and I'd be well up for a Glasgow Bass Bash too, I'm sure I could wrench myself over from the East Coast for such a glorious occasion ;)

Cheers,
Eude

6.
thats the first time i've seen the back of that singlecut, i always imagined it to be much the same as the front
Yeah, it would've been nice to be able to afford another fancy bit of wood, but I could only stretch to the one facing, plus it's only a wafer thing drop top... ;)

Eude

7. Geez Mark that bass is a belter!
That is easily one of the nicest looking boutique basses I have ever seen in my life!
It's up there with anything Fodera have ever produced.
You must be one happy punter and credit to Alan's incredible luthiery too.

Can't wait to hear some sound clips of it ;)

Now stop reading this and go play your new bass! :P

Cheers,
Eude

8. This looks really cool!
I love the idea behind it at least, whether or not the quality is there though is another thing though.
I'd love a small lowish powered affordable all valve amp but there doesn't seem to be anything on the market.
The closest thing I've ever seen with the old Trace Elliot Twin Valve head and that Ampeg one from a while back, but they seem to be as rarer a rocking horse poop now...

Cheers,
Eude

9.
Thanks for the EMG comments - love the sound of single coils but the hum can be a pain sometimes. Good to know what options there are.
Well I might muster up some sound clips for the shuker site soon, so watch this space :P
mmm, i like that jazz, just oozes class
Thanks dude, it's odd to think that my "pub bass" would ooze class, but it does have something special about it...
Love that J - reminds me of mine (being all black, and all ;) ) but love the individuality and thought you've put into it. Like the 6er too, even if I'd never be able to play it well :)
Thanks dude, it all came together really well, it's certainly dotting all the I's and crossing all the T's.
Nice to have compliments from a fellow stealth bass player too
I wouldn't worry all that much about playing a 6er to be honest, it's easier than you'd think.
If you've ever played a little bit of any other instrument and been able to translate that into your bass playing, you're a step ahead already, bar a bit of muscle memory training, you should give it a go, you might surprise yourself...

10.
I never thought i'd say these words, but I like the 6 string single-cut.

Nice pair. ;)
Cheers dude, glad you approve :P
Indeed a nice pair you have their Eude!
Good pictures Mate and reminds me I must take some of mine for the porn section.

Take care,
JTB
Yeah man, get some nice "glamour" shots of that Shuker of yours.
I had to wait for a day when I was in during daylight, believe it or not this was the first opportunity this year!
Really nice...and I'm not usually keen on sixes. Two questions - does the 33" make much difference to the feel/ how do the EMG JV's work for trad Jbass tone?
Thanks man!
The 33" scale doesn't make a huge difference to the feel.
Simply by the laws of physics, things will be a little looser, however, I'm currently using some very nice SIT Nickels which are that little bit tighter which helps to compensate. The slightly shorter scale also makes the bass a lot more playable especially if you've got small hands like myself.

The EMG JV's get a very good traditional bass tone without any hum or unwanted noise.
The bridge pickup doesn't quite get to a glass breaking honk, but it's pretty close.
The neck pickup is thick, dark and bassy.
My only criticism is that the tone knob doesn't do a whole lot, SteveSoar did warn me of that, so I might swap that out for something else.

Cheers,
Eude

11. Hey guys,
here's some long overdue, half decent, pics of my two Shukers.

First up is my newly acquired Pub Bass >>

33" Scale
Downsized J Bass shape, Slab Finished Black Walnut body with Black Wet Look Gloss finish and matching headstock (a bugger to keep clean and shiny :P )
5 piece Mahogany/Wenge neck with graphite rods, 22 frets and Rosewood Fingerboard
EMG JV pickups and electronics with vol /vol /tone control layout
This bass makes some fantastic dark and thick vintage tones and even a fairly convincing Jaco impersonation, although my playing isn't really up to it...

Next up is my 6 String Single-Cut Bolt-On >>

33" Scale tuned B to C
Single-Cut, Slab Finished White Ash Body with an Amboyna Drop Top and matching headstock and Satin Laquer
5 piece Maple/Wenge neck with graphite rods, 24 frets and Santos Rosewood Fingerboard
Dual EMG DC pickups with Shuker designed 3 band EQ with internal mid freq control and gain
This bass has a real hi-fi thing going on with a fantastic range of tones available thanks to the EMGs and the Shuker 3 band EQ.

Here's a couple of pics of them together

These basses really contrast and complement each other very nicely providing a go to bass for each aspect of playing I'm currently involved in.
I'm one happy bunny ;)

Cheers,
Eude

12.
Midget Twin should be the same size as the Big One whilst Big Baby should be the same size as The Compact. Similar weights too. Price-wise, expect the new 12" models to cost about the same as the equivalent 15" models currently do (i.e. Big Baby = Big One, Midget = Compact, Midget Twin = Vintage) though the 15"s will be going up in price about £30 per woofer due to the plummeting GBP vs USD once I run out of my current stock of speakers.

Alex
Nice one!
I imagine you might see an Aguilar 112 appear in the For Sale section when you can get your mitts on the 12" drivers...

Eude

13.
Any cabs with two woofers will be 4 ohm, the rest will be 8 ohm.

In terms of bottom the cabs go: Midget << Compact & Vintage << Big One & Big Baby & Big Twin
In terms of voltage sensitivity the cabs go: Big Baby < Midget < Big One < Compact < Big Twin < Midget Twin < Vintage
In terms of max LF SPL the cabs go: Midget < Compact < Big Baby < Midget Twin < Big One < Vintage < Big Twin
In terms of max broadband SPL the cabs go: Big Baby < Midget < Compact < Big One < Midget Twin < Big Twin < Vintage

The Big One and The Big Baby are aimed at those that want maximum bottom and punch and clarity and off-axis response.
The Compact is aimed at those that want a cab that has maximum output for the weight and price, good bottom, very good sensitivity.
The Midget is aimed at those that want a smaller version of The Compact - it has less bottom naturally it'll take EQ very well to get that bottom back.
The Midget Twin is aimed at those that want a really loud lightweight cab, even louder than The Compact but are willing to compromise on bottom - a Schroeder killer! ;)
The Big Twin is aimed at those that want a Big One but want a 4 ohm load to get more from their amp, are scared of 15" speakers or want a bit more max SPL than The Big One.

I'll also be making The Big Sub and The Baby Sub (basically The Big One and The Big Baby without the midrange but still with the lowpass filtering on the woofers) for those that want an expandable rig. I suppose I could also make a Big Twin Sub for mad/deaf people...

The designs shouldn't take too long as I've done the hard part in getting the previous models and the crossover sorted. The more pertinent question is how long until the speakers arrive this side of the pond?

Alex
Wow Alex,
That's a fairly broad spectrum of cabs, but all with a well thought out niche in the market - Nice work.
Still reckon either a Midget Twin or more likely a Big Baby would suit me well, as decent off axis response would be very handy given the varying sizes of stages and venues my band ends up playing.

When will you have an idea of sizes, weight, prices etc.?

Eude

14.
I think this will be The Big Baby. And then the 2x12"+6.5" The Big Twin, the tiny 12" The Midget, and the compact 2x12" The Midget Twin. What a lot of different models but each one will have its own niche!

Alex
Really cool ideas Alex!
These all sound amazing, maybe a Midget Twin might end being up my street, either that or The Big Baby.
I love the sound of 12" speakers.
Are any of these units going to be 4 Ohm?

How soon do you think you'll have the designs on these worked up?

Cheers,
Eude

15.
Looks like the new Eminence 12"s are worth using - will be making a mini version of The Big One which will be the same size as The Compact and also a larger version of The Big One for those that want even more output and a 4 ohm load.

The other 12" doesn't have as much bottom as I'd like but will still be a really nice high sensitivity cab for those that want something smaller than The Compact or something even louder (as a 2x12" version) and thanks to its high excursion it will be able to move a lot of bottom, you'll just need to EQ it in that much more.

Alex
Awesome news Alex.
I look forward to see how this cab develops...
Will you call it The Medium One?... ;)

Eude

16.
The Probags looks nice, but the all leather thing automatically makes me think "heavy". How's yours weight-wise?
Hey man,
it's not too bad actually, I was pleasantly surprised by the weight, although it is a single bag rather than a double.
I was using a top of the range Ritter bag which was a lot heavier, one of the new style ones and it literally fell to bits over the last 2 years.
I was very very disappointed with it, when I finally put it in the bin, it had no grab handles left and only one shoulder strap!
The Pro Bag is really a breath of fresh air, I've finally found a bag worthy of carrying my shiny Shukers around.

If you want, I'll try and get some photos for you next week.

Cheers,
Eude
