Learn to use the EQ on your amp and work out best positioning for your cab. ie In a corner as close to a back wall as possible. Depending on what type of music and the size of venue 180 watts should be ok for less than 100 people, any more than that and I think you will struggle.

You can take a line out from your amp to the PA, just make sure you plug into a line-in input on the PA as opposed to a mic level input. If you have a PA with balanced mic inputs ie 3pin XLR then use the DI.

We always put our guitarist through the PA by taking an output from his amp effects send jack to a line in on the PA. This means we can control his stage level and room level much better.
While bass straight from a DI sounds fine I don't think I would for electric guitar.
I find mic the cab will sound better, you can use some kind of power soak to get the volume down yet still push the valves.

2. yes it is a guitar. im sorry. if it helps i really can't play the thing...
yeah the home build may keep getting stuff added to it with felt pens. I figure as I am an artist by training it can only add to the value of the thing. I only used it live once, half way through, with the stress of playing fretless too the amp cuts out, i think it is my soldering and switch to the fretted only to find that doesnt work either. i lent it to a friend and he did use it live for stuff, must have done his back in, its super heavy!

3. big venues I have played have done

bass - di box to desk - amp
and then miced the amp so they have two signals.

smaller places just taken the DI out before the amp.

flaw with using just your amp is it increases the on stage volume which is never normally a good thing

4. And last of all my home built fretless.

Vox standard bass body, weighs a flippin tonne, 'routed' for a pup with a hammer and chisel.
no name neck I ripped the frets out of and coated with ronseal diamond hard varnish.
MM style pup, 'screwjack' bridge...

It plays, its not awful, its not great. Body is too heavy and will get replaced eventually, as will the neck....

5. Squier '57 RI Precision Bass

Early 1982 JV P bass, somebody replaced the pups.
JV02479, still has the sticker of the shop it as bought from.

Its amazing to play. I've tried out the current US '57RI and prefer this! Though I am biased.

6. Well I figure I should show off a wee bit, I think I now have two amazing basses I am super happy with.

My first bass was the status shark proactive that gets sold on on here every 4 months. When I was in my old band I sold it to get a Fender CIJ '57 RI P bass for that classic thump and to cut through more. The shark was sold to buy a blue warwick streamer stage one off warwickhunt.
The Fender was sold to buy the Squier below.
The blue warwick was lovely but it took me a long time to like it and use it, something about its tone didnt sound right. I found a natural one on gumtree and sold bluey.
I also made my own cheapy fretless for well under 100 with parts bought on here, and a guitar (! i know) which I try and play off a guy on here.
Ive forgotten the names of most the folk I can thank for selling me such great gear.

I play them through a Hughes and Kettner Quantum 600 head into a Tech Soundsystems classic 2x12.
I also sometimes play with a Bass Pox XT live that I recently bought, Its great though I have a habit of tweeking setting in soundchecks and then accedentally saving over patches I need....

anyway on to the pictures...

7. i think for your first bass, go and play everything in your price range. see what you like.
also don't be put off by the cheaper stuff. Its your first bass, and you are talking about a fair whack of money. If you take to bass playing you will probably end up upgrading and then you can buy secondhand.

8. lock your basses away.
sell the amps, they can be replaced.
spend the money on tickets to see music you like.
or music you don't know if you will like yet.
go to lots of stuff.
listen to lots of stuff.
fall in love with music again.

and then
and only then
when you're in love
then pick up the bass.
find people to play with, they will turn up.
If you can be part on making something you love it will be good, and you wont care if you play super complex basslines, or just hammer out root notes.

9. my mate bob has a bass for sale, he sticks his mini dv camera at it and videos himself playing. he's not too hot a player.
my mate jim has a bass for sale, he sorts out the lighting and camera angles, sticks the camera up and videos himself. He's the kind of bass player that makes flea and jaco look pedestrian. at the same time using his bass Pod he records the sound through an emulated bass amp with a wee bit of compression and reverb. later on final cut pro he sticks the sound and the visuals together.

which would you buy?

10.
It's an old Tokai. From that period they're great guitars & certainly comparable to the good examples of U.S. originals. I've seen Tokais, along with Fernandes,Burny,Greco etc of that vintage go for more, & sometimes less. That price isn't that excessive IMO.
there was an old tokai p bass from the eighties in my local music shop a while back. Similar price. I was interested as heard so many good things about them, tried it and underwealmed by the feel of the thing. The neck wasn't that nice. (I'm comparing it to my JV P) I was quite surprised, I went in with lowish expectations and expected to be surprised with an excelent bass. I wasnt!

11.
Finally got round to snapping a photo of it. It's not in the best condition, cosmetically, but then I like 'character'.
if you keep it inside it will keep in a better condition for longer. otherwise maybe creosote the whole thing?

12.
nice one, i reckon he was just trying to get you to lower your price by going away and making it look like you'd lost a potential sale, when in fact he was probably willing to pay the full price all along, he just wanted to take his bait. Maybe.
yeah think so. he certainly upped his bid when i told him i wasn't bothered and would just give it to my brother! I'm happy, ive sold a bass and replaced it with with a better ( i think) version from the same year for half the price :)

13.
Gona be gettin a new bass. yay!

Its gona be a jazz body but i aint sure whether it should have JJ or PJ pickups.

Anyone able to help me decide?

im new btw so hi everyone :)
does the music you listen too have a p bass sound or a j bass sound, what do you want to sound like when you play?
I think something about the placement of the P pup gives it its distinctive sound, I think it sits slightly differently in the mix than a Jazz neck pup. what do you want?

I personally would er towards JJ with nice fancy active electronics and then have a passive P bass too...

14. in scotland theres not really much good secondhand stuff floating around I've seen (except on basschat) so apart from the one I bought last week I doubt you will see many old warwicks about.
Fair enough if he is all about having perfect condition basses and didn't want it. But to say he didn't want it, then offer me less for it? It makes no real sense.

I should have realised he was a funny'un when he looks at my bass amp (Hughes and Kettner quantum 600 into old style tech 2x12) and asks "is that a bass amp?" in a kinda what is that rubbish you're plugging me into way. The answer to his question would have been in the bright blue glowing 'quantum bass technology' panel!
oh well
