1. but only if the cabs are wired in parallel inside yes? (socket linked to socket, both wired to drivers) if they are wired in series (ie socket 1 goes through drivers link to socket 2) they are ashdown cabs.

thinknig about it it would make sense to be wired in serises if thats what folk do.

i think mine may have been sat in a shop for a few years, hence why i got it so cheap. :) more fool everyone else.

its like a really clean crisp apple, but with a bit of flavour.
ashdown would be a more sweet softer apple.
ampeg would be juicy and watery with a bt of a sharp tang (granny smith)
peavey would be a bramley

feel free to expand on my apple annology. I only have one kettle lead so the mac is turning off, and the bass amp is going on...!

2. right.... it has one speakon output with a switch you can turn to tell it the ohmage of your system.. thats fine for hooking up on cab. say i have two at 8 ohm, how do you wire them in parrelel? Daisy chaining them will give you 16ohms right wich is too much?

3. :) it arrived

first impressions (Fender CIJ '57 RI into a techsoundsytems classic 2x12 with the tweeter off cos the switch is bust)
it looks pretty, lights up when you turn it on.
nice clean sound
but warm
'tube growl' knob makes it sound more valvey, kinda a thicker slightly compressed retro sound?
the Eq is apparently parrellel look up the technical side of that yourself but it works really differently. It doenst make any real changes to the tone, just boosts that bit. Bad description i know, ashdown you turn the treble know up the whole sound seems to change around it, you get a thinner trebley-er sound this it just seems to make the treble more there in the sound. It's different but opening ears and just playing around you can get some really nice musical sounds. Very differnt to other Eqs ive used on amps.
lots of pre-shapes i can add- nice.
not too heavy 15kg
ooh a footswitch! turns 'punch' filter on and off and effects loop.
4. could it be anything to do with a certain music shops market share here in scotland and the fact that 2 years ago the were pushing crate and line6 and now they push ampeg?

Also if you have a limited budget fenders are quite a safe buy.you know what you are getting, what it will sound like(ish) and that it will still be cool looking in another few years. If your local music shop/superstore doesnt have a big selection of other makes that you can try out and see if you will like then ppl are more likely to stick to the safe bet.
It's a shame as there are many really cool basses out there that people won't try because fender seem safer. Same with the amps, most ppl from first reaction would go for ampeg/orange/mesa/ashdown over say markbass or warwick or someone cos they have heard of these classic rock brands and seen whatever big name 'stars' are using them.

5. yay lots and lots of blown peaveys which sounds farty and like a hammer hitting a tin can.
lots of the practice studios in ed seem to have closed recently. the one i use most frequently now has ampeg B1s and 4x10s which are alright. still got the soundcontrol prices on the back! Nice but put me off ever buying an ampeg.

another place we went gave us a massive room the size of a basket ball court and a (nice actually) MAG combo that hadnt been trashed.

6.
Snap. The house rig in whistlebinkies in Edinburgh is Ashdown and I've never heard it sound decent.
thats cos its wistlebinkies, the most amazing band in the world ever could play in there and we would all come out and wonder why nothing had sounded decent.
bannermans has one too, last time i was in there last week the idiot on PA had the whole PA too loud, hurt my ears for no good reason and couldn't hear and definition on anything but the kick and snare.
I've managed to avoid playing both so far. Cab Vol is pretty sweet, the PA subs are under the stage so you can literally feel your playing. :)
However when you play cab vol you bring you own amp, which i did, which wasn't an ashdown, so i digress

7. +1 on the CIJ, awesome. The neck is perfection. and the sound. mmm I got the US model of the 57RI. You see some on denmark st but they tend to be the standard versions they just sell at silly high prices.
GE take a couple of days for email I found, nothing to worry about as it's also the weekend. Could always ring them.
And keep an eye on http://www.fareastguitars.co.uk/usedbasses.htm as he'll often have good stock on there (when he's got stock)
+1 great guy to deal with. i more or less emailed him what i wanted and got an email back saying he had one in the next batch. Second hand japanese, someone had upgraded the controls and jack socket to "US standard" ones on mine (whatever that means) and put an orange drop cap in (whatever that is, its big and orange and i hardly use it)
its getting a anodised aluminium pickguard by the end of the week. Quoted £60 over here £12.50 in the states, the benefit of living with an american :)

(what is the orange drop thing btw?)

8.
Another vote here for turning off the "pre-shape" function, it really not too sure why they even put those on amps. I mean, wouldn't it be possible to dial in the same tone, just by using the EQ or am I missing something?

Of course, I don't for one second think that most people, who're displeased with the Ashdown sound haven't actually tried turning the pre-shape off. As many have already stated, it's a horses for courses situation. Personally I love my ABM300 EVO-II, ABM 210T and ABM 410T.

My only real complaint so far, is having to remember what position on and off are, for the Pre/Post EQ D.I. switch. Oh and the Sub-Harmonics function is pretty crap if you ask me (but then I'm used to using a WH4 Whammy), and the OD sounds a bit rubbish after 12 o'clock, that's just my opinion though, others seem to like it fairly cranked.
:S i was playing through one for a year or so every few weeks till i realised to turn the pre-shape off. have to crank the gain- but then the VU meter is broke on ours so gain is a bit of a guessing game.
by OD do you mean the preamp selector knob?

also do the new ones sound the same?

9. shows how excited i was, its the bass merchant in witham essex. He was selling it on the bay and i was at work so couldnt bid. It didnt make it's reserve so i emailed to find out the craic. Turns out he had been having a clear out of a few items and stuck them on the bay of which the (my!) amp was one.
Great guy, type him into google and his website comes up.
i was deliberating getting it then i saw someone selling a second hand little mark 2 on here for 450 and realised what a great price it was. comes on wed

but my cab is broke pending a switch coming over from the states.... poo.

10. Somewhat sillyly or not i just rang up mike at hte mass merchant and ordered a lovely new Hughes and Kettner Quantum 600 head at a very reasonable £425.
I'm very excited- its just slightly better than my 70's/80's Laney Pro-Bass!
any one else had experience with one of these?

11.
Oh thank almighty Zarquon, I was starting to think it was just me that hated the things. I've tried Ashdown amps stuff a number of times, and I've tried really hard to like them, but no. To my ears they just sound horrid unless you apply a ton of EQ -- for me, if an amp doesn't sound OK with the EQ flat, then forget it.
good call. with the preshape 'muddy' switch off and the Eq off to my ears it just sounds Ok. nothing exciting. I have a wee Vox T25, all flat that sounds warm and intresting, i have an ancient Laney Pro-bass and all eq flat it sounds fun, both have rewarding tones making me want to play more. ashdowns... not so rewarding.

12. they would eh? lack of any recording shizzle means it would take a few days to set this up, will work on it.

(for impartiality the one from Luke was written by me a few years back)

13. Hey all anyone have an interest in my Owen bass gremlin overdrive pedal. I bought it a few years back and to be honest it's been sat gathering dust.
Hand built analogue overdrive pedal, made in England.
http://www.owenelectronics.co.uk/9939.html gives you the manufacturers spiel about it and what it does.

Hopefully i have stuck up photos of it.
It has an on/bypass footswitch, and one for switching between the two different filters.
Two filters 'notch' (cuts harmonics in narrow passband) and 'bandpass' (boosts harmonics in narrow passband and cuts harmonics either side of it) giving many different types of OD sounds You can tune your OD to whatever frequency you want/sounds best
each filter has a "push to mix" button which allows it to be mixed with the clean signal with the mix control, this can be set at full unaffected allowing you to use one of the filters as a signal booster switch
the drive control ups the thickness of overdrive effect, the level sets the level of the whole output.
pretty lights tell you whats on and if your battery is running down.

On input side is input for guitar jack, 9v DC input and a sturdy holder for the 9v battery. Output gives you two affected outputs and one clean line output.

It's really good at letting the tone of your bass come through despite the OD using the OD to warm up your sound without overpowering it.
I've got the classy bag and individual serial numbered manual that came with it.

Quality bit of kit that I don't need, anyone interested? You can see how much they are new on the website, make me an offer and make me happy.

Luke.
