    No.

When she finished her one song, she turned round to switch it off, only to see that the amplifier was not on.

In mitigation, that was the first time she had played bass in front of the congregation (and the last), after just two practices (in which she had learnt to play the instrument, and learnt the song too).

Also - was DI taken before the amp? Lass playing her first gig could very well be hearing herself through the FOH or foldback …

@Risk101 As much as it would be good to meet up, I work nowhere near the City.

I'm fine, it's just that sometimes I naively assume that others will have the same passion, focus, enthusiasm, drive and commitment as myself, talk about setting myself up for disappointment LOL.

I just needed to have a rant to likeminded musicians to get it out of my system.

I initially joined the worship team as a bass player but now, I play bass, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, I sing lead vocals and I lead worship.  I suppose it's because I fill a lot of different roles that more gets asked of me.  I LOVE playing in the worship team and I'm going to focus on the fact that I'm playing more music now at 55 than I ever did when I was in my teens and 20's.  I will continue to serve God and my church, I will continue to "praise him with the strings." Psalm 150:4 😃

    You’re doing too much.

I’ve had spells where I end up over committing to things, been too busy. The first sign you can tell is getting impatient and having a lack of compassion and care for others.

which is ok, it happens: step back and refocus in a positive way.

also the Message translation/paraphrase of Amos 5:21-24 is worth a read.

I'm not sure it can. I've yet to discover that. But at the moment, the current setup I have already allows me to navigate and access all the essential stuff I need.

It got the better of me...

which is cool as I think you could set the FS on the stomp to do changes on stomp and C4 on one FS :)

    My Pros list only consists of;

    1. I love playing as music is my passion.
    2. I get to serve God and the church.
    3. I'm improving as a musician.

There isn't actually anybody officially in charge but, I honestly doubt that it would change anything if there was.  I could run the Worship Team but I know that I'd end up losing people by telling a few home truths.  The general consensus is that it's voluntary so we can't ask too much of people and, everyone has lives outside the church and so what if they miss a few rehearsals and pull out at the last minute.

I had to lead worship two Sundays running because somebody else, who was down to lead that week, didn't want to, they felt that because they had led worship three weeks before, it was too close to the last time.....well me leading two Sundays running is a lot closer together than three weeks apart you knob.  It drives me f**king mad and all I get told, is to relax and don't get stressed.  I get stressed because I actually give a f*ck, I take my music very seriously and when I play, I give God the best I can offer.

I'm easy going but, even I've come close to punching people due their lack of commitment and how they don't give a sh*t.  I get to every rehearsal and every service at least 30-40 minutes early, I turn everything on, set up the PA and get everything ready, the others then rock up 10-20 minutes after we were due to actually start playing and then the usual bullsh*t begins; "sorry I'm late", "l need a coffee before we start", "what songs are we playing?", "how does this song go?", "I forgot my [BLANK] can I borrow yours?", "has anybody got the music, I never printed it off", "I haven't even listened to the songs yet", "I've just go to take this call"....

Sometimes we don't even have a rehearsal before the Sunday because most of the others have something more important to do, we then all turn up on Sunday morning with no time to run through the songs and I know that someone won't have even listened to the songs and will play bum notes throughout the entire service and make us all sound like idiots.

I really don't want to quit but it's getting close to it.

    Maybe a comparable analogy…

You join your pub Sunday league football team. Everyone rucks up on Sunday, some hung over, some just wscaping the kids for a bit.
where’s the training, where’s the physio? The game plan and organised automations like you used to work on back when you used to play for West Ham?

it’s different - maybe you turning up early and working so hard means the rest of the team don’t pull their weight cos you are always doing too much for them? Maybe a break would be good for everyone, you unwind and enjoy a rest, they realise how much you contribute and when you come back the understanding of your value is there, and maybe also it’s Sunday league - not West Ham level

I'm selling almost all of my pedalboard and exchanging for an HX Effects tomorrow, but keeping my VTBass DI. I used to hate the idea of multi-effects units but here we are, and I'm really excited. Probably won't be very excited once I start to try and use the thing. I've been advised to get HX Edit, as much as I'd like to just do it all on the unit.

you'll have fun :)  how complex a pedal board will you be making with it?

.. much lower temps involved with soldering. Probably more similar to brazing than welding. I’ll do some internet research at some point, cheers 👍🏼

Same idea - it’s going to flow to hot things

… how does the lead free/vs lead solder interact with the components then? At the school I work at we only use lead free (for obvious reasons).

lead based solder melts at a lower temprature - so it's a lot more forgiving and easy to warm everything up enough. Lead free, it might be my cheaper soldering iron, and I find it harder to get the joints to flow together properly. (mind you I never learned to solder properly, but I did learn to weld and braise at uni, and it's similar right?)

... on another note, has anybody had any experience of replacing SMT stuff? I've heard it's pretty hard, not that I need to though, just wondering how it's done.

So that PCB I’m sorting you with… I guess I’ll do the SMT J201s then for you 🤣

it’s fiddly and annoying and frustrating but not impossible. For not microscopic parts… IC or computer chips with the super fine solder pads I wouldn’t want to touch!! I use solder with lead in - I can’t imagine doing it with lead free stuff

right ... review time of the Lab Series L4 preamp since I've built it...

It's the oddest sounding thing I've built! It doesn't sound like I would expect it too, and can't put my finger on why!

What I was expecting was "preamp pedal, quite clean, maybe crossed with an low gain overdrive pedal."
The closest thing I've experienced to it is my old HX stomp and flicking between two amp models (once set up with non crazy gain) - there's a processed nature to the sound, some compression maybe? and a complexity that feels more like an amp model, esp when getting hairy, than something like most the OD pedals I've tried (or indeed models of said OD on HX stomp or the Zoom stuff)

Channel A is pure Fender tonestack, probably more bassman feeling than showman preamp - there's that classic dip in the mids.
Channel B is more- I dunno what - I can get more driven rock tones out of it. Deep switch on both just adds more everything and changes the way it reacts. Swept mids is very powerful but fairly wide Q I think.

You can set it up so A is lower gain, and B higher, and then bounce the high gain into the post master limiter to keep the signal level under control.

Playing with it this way I was thinking "this is finicky to set up and get levels right" ... and then played along to a track and it sounded great - slightly dirty but fitting in the mix and not fizzy or shouty at all - just right and part of the tone I was hoping to get when I built this pedal.

Another strange thing... The preamp I built before this was a valve version of a Alembic/Fender showman, and it had quite a lot of output that would quickly clip the colourbox at the end of my chain.

This also has lots of output, or at least sounds LOUD-  but doesn't seem to make clip the colourbox clip as much - I don't think it's subsonics as I was using a HPF between them but it's very strange.

Anyway. slightly fiddly to set up, but rewarding when it is.

Does anyone want any PCBs from deadendFX? - https://www.deadendfx.com/products

There's a few that I want but their shipping rate has sky rocketed since i last ordered - $60 for a fair few PCBs - anybody interested in splitting shipping costs?

not really crossed my mind, but would be cool to hear what you're thinking of building!

Love the Union LAB, I’ve just got a couple of Lutishand Alma Mk 1 units (early and late versions) and I love how optical

compressors sound. May put one on a church board of mine, an Empress bass compressor is on there though so they might have to take turns lol 😝

One at the start and one at the end?

In my journey to find the smallest & lightest amount of gear to take to gigs am wondering if this might be a goer, having seen a pic of one and realising how small it is. My needs/wants are pretty simple, as below:

DI to FOH PA for every gig

    Tuner

A good sound akin to an SVT/Sansamp

Same sound as above but with added drive but no added volume

Would the HX Stomp be for me?

Having owned one and enjoyed owning it - yes-

it has both sansamp and SVT models!

you would need TRS-XLR cable to get your DI signal but that’s it.

it would do all you want and masses masses more.

it is a digital wee box you can dive deep on - if you play electric too it’s def worth buying - I carried mine in the front of my gig bag… ideally you might put it in another bag…

But if you are carrying another bag and all you want is sansamp-tuner-di  then a tuner and the programmable sansamp, a one spot power supply and a bit of board and Velcro might be just as easy.
