Take tons of music and learn to sight sing. When you return you will be amazed at how much your reading will have improved.

How not to impress a lady bassist...
jakenewmanbass replied to jojobass's topic in General Discussion
the man seems to me to have his reasons for his unsolicited advice, I suspect they are little if anything to do with the electric bass guitar. -
Who's up for another South East Bass Bash?
jakenewmanbass replied to silverfoxnik's topic in General Discussion
I'm only 8 miles from Guildford so if it's after my hols (I'm back on 30th aug) I'm definitely up for it. Maybe I could suggest Sun 31st? If I come I'll be bringing an 1880 upright an Alembic MK5 deluxe and a '78 Jazz Jake -
Who on Basschat has the most expensive bass?
jakenewmanbass replied to Jonny Walker's topic in General Discussion
I have quite a valuable electric but it pales in comparison to the cost of fine double basses, A good orchestral bass starts at around 10 grand. -
Got me thinking now ... next kilt wearing wedding gig we do I may sneak it in when the band's not looking Priobably do a cumberland square 4 to it
Last Time I wore a kilt on a gig I went all traditional and didn't bring (or wear) any undies to the gig. On arrival I found that the band leader had only been able to acquire mini skirts in tartan. The nick name Jake the peg came into context... -
In what context? In most things funk/rock things I play a Dorian instead of natural minor, ie. major 6th instead of minor 6th. Obviously I can hear when the people playing with me are playing a natural minor - my major 6th clashes horribly with their minor 6th and people give me funny looks.
Well you kind of said it yourself, the major 6 will clash with the key signature when dorian is used instead of the natural minor. So to answer your question the "context" is the key. I'm at pains to say though, I don't describe things as right or wrong, rather strong or weak relationships. You can train your ears to accept anything, with qualities of relationships ranging from sweet and consonant to angular and dissonant and everything inbetween. One interesting example of what people will accept in terms of angular harmony is to listen to a soundtrack from a horror or thriller film, you will hear the composer using all sorts of dischordant harmony devices to provoke a response from the audience, and it works, it's interesting to me that in a film score people accept lots of weird stuff due to the context, but if you take away the visual they call it nonsense. It indicates a lack of understanding to my mind. Anyway to answer another question. The "correct" (in theory terms) answer was mine. But as Dlloyd said in aural terms everyone is correct.

I would simply say be patient and wait for the right bass to come along. The economic climate should dictate that you could find a bargain, assuming you're prepared to buy 2nd hand.
Harmonic minor is the minor we normally use, so carrying on in the key of C:
Nearly. The natural minor (A minor in the key of C) is the one in "normal" useage, the harmonic is an altered minor (raised 7th) in commercial music and represents the major third (would usually be minor third) of the dominant chord in a minor II V I progression. I understand that classical harmony may differ from this, I am talking about this in a modal context as that is what the OP asked. There is no Harmonic minor in the modal expression of major harmony hence me referring to it as altered.
Does anyone know how the publishing royalties work with these acts? Does the venue just pay their PRS subscription and it goes into the pot and out again in the usual rather baffling manner or is there a more direct revenue stream from the tribute act to the songwriters? Alex
In theory yes, they are supposed to complete a PRS return listing all songs and their composers. -

And another thing!! originality is totally over-rated and rarely exists. Aural tradition music (the vast majority of all the music in the history of man) relies entirely on music being passed on by ear and then re-produced, what makes it different are the individual attributes of the performer. -

I guess I'm alone in this (maybe not) and I'm not trying to tell anyone off, it's just how I feel about things and only that. I just love playing music, it makes me happy. I don't give any creedence to the views of others as to whether a piece of music is to their taste or not, for me it's just playing music. I don't have time to think about how good something is and I sure as hell will not get caught up in what anyone thinks of me for playing absolutely anything. I just look around the world and piss my pants laughing at how lucky I am to be feeding my kids with bass playing (compares with a Zimbabwean farmer or a father of a pillaged Sudanese tribe or an occupant of the projects in New York, or an eastern European labourer etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc .... Come on folks lets have some perspective shall we And a final thought, I play for others enjoyment largely, and that's the measure, in turn, of my enjoyment. -
They are on a disk in pdf, pm me with your email address and I'll see if I can find someone willing to send you a copy

I have Beyerdynamic DT770s and they are superb especially for bass, I even take them on sessions as I prefer them to the sennheisers that seem to be the studio can of choice.
I think I know which shape you're referring to, it's a very elegant shape... and the fact that it's an Alembic doesn't exactly inhibit it's desirability There's quite substantial mass to the bottom of the bass (near the bridge) is there not? Mark
There is Mark, so it is quite weighty but with a wide strap and the excellent balance it has it doesn't really tell. Jake oh and thanks

If you have people around you that can give suggestions (ie the drummer) then use their ideas, don't be afraid to ask, and there is no shame in using the resources you have available. You've already done the important thing of learning others bass lines, in time you will develop your own lines as the songs become familiar. You are just at the beginning of something new so relax and ease your way into it, effort is always appreciated. You should not be embarrased by the comparative abilites of others, be hungry to learn from it. Pride has no place in the bass chair. Jake

Does the sound of your bass make you go, "OH YES!"?
jakenewmanbass replied to OutToPlayJazz's topic in General Discussion
When I took my Alembic to a large room for the first time, I couldn't stop laughing. It sounded like the death star. It was Indigo 2 at the O2 arena I was direct into the PA. All the crew said to me what the f*** is that bass it sounds awesome. I smiled
