1.
Fair points Tom. However, whatever the rights and wrongs, if the buyer wants to use the DSR he has a limited time to do so (I think 7 days from receipt of the bass). Arguing that he was sitting around waiting for eBay to respond to his emails will not be considered an excuse if he misses that deadline. C
Yeh, and I read your link about DSR it was most informative thanks!
2. If you buy a used computer, always format it before using it. A fresh install will never contain viruses. escholl - I disagree on usability, but that's just an opinion. I guess you're right about sharing/swapping projects in that more people do use Pro Tools.
3. "the seller" is an Ebay Store. If I order a pair of shoes online as in the above example, I want to be able to return them if they don't fit. If I order a bass, from a shop, and I don't like it when it arrives, why should I not be able to return it? How do you know if you like a bass without playing it? I'm sure this will provoke the usual "well you should buy in a shop then" - so shall we make online stores illegal?
4.
i would suggest not using cubase
How come?
5.
For computors your going to need something with a) lots of power and lots of memory. I would personaly go for a mac just because windows is flooded with viruses that have ruined my laptop countless times.
I don't plug my studio PC into the net - just an idea.
6.
Agreed, although sound-proofing is obviously a two way street, as much about keeping extraneous sound out as keeping ours in, Much as I'd like the space to have a vibe, the sound of distant farm machinery grinding away during the second verse might be a little too much character, as might the sound of the potential Mrs Beedster pulling up outside with her car stereo on 10! I think the build diary could well happen. Cheers C
Yeh, of course. At my place we get lorries and all sorts, but not too much as I only record after hours. I think the fact i'm only really doing loud rock music helps, although I did an acoustic album with a young guy, and that went really well - we just had to re-do a couple of songs because of engine noise. Mixing desk - I really like the protools mixers with integration with the computer. I think it works really well. I think they're probably out of your budget, but I wouldn't know for sure. It would deffinitely be nice to have some sort of physical control over your DAW. I have a steinberg houston, which isn't the most amazing product ever, but I got it used on here for £100ish, and it's great for transport, and for mixing and automation. I won't suggest an actual mixer as obviously you could afford one with nice pre-amps etc and I try not to look at gear I can't afford. However, deciding on the number of channels shouldn't be too hard - how many mics do you want to record simultaneously? Add 4 to that number for good measure. RE the computer, it's all down to preference. I like Cubase and PCs, but I also like Pro Tools. I use PCs and windows because I know how, not because they're better than Macs. I deffinitely think you're looking at a proper tower rather than a laptop though.
7. "the duplicators" "the copy cats"
8. The purple helmet warriors.
9. Aunt Bessie and the Faggots!
10. You seem to like the kind of mix i'd call "mushy". Personally, I like being able to hear each individual instrument, in fact that's half the challenge when mixing! I'd suggest you switch your digital recordings to mono, squash them with a compressor, and EQ the mids up.
11. Davo - I totally agree on how hard it is to be a drummer and keep time!
12. I'm still following this by the way , it should turn out very cool.
13. Just talk to him about it. Hopefully he won't take it too personally. If you just tell him to start using his kick and practising, he could get better!
14. yeh you'll be impressed with the mic - it can take some pretty loud sources and sounds great. I've used it a lot for capturing random samples to use on our album - the sounds of pots and pans and stuff like that. It's really useful.
15.
Nope was told it was awful
Interesting. It's been a while since I tried it outside of a clean blend but I love it.
16. tayste just out of interest have you tried a Zvex wah probe?
17.
Just to have 4 vocal condensors for under 1k is pretty good going, my hats off to you sir
Yeh I shouldn't have used the word "nice" though. I mean like SE2200s and NT1s
18. You should do a build diary!! Depending on your location, perhaps soundproofing isn't that necessary IE if you're moving out to the sticks where no-one will hear. Sound proofing is where the main cost will come in I think. I've been able to set up a (bit of a dodgy amateur) studio where we rehearse so we can record every practise. I have two sets of drum mics, 4 nice vocal condensors, plenty of dynamics for the cabs, cables, pre-amps, and I can record up to 24 channels into Cubase at a time - all for under £1k. Also, my room is very "live" but i've learned to love the sound of it, although it did take some EQing of the bass amp to stop the ground quaking.
19. Yeh I have a guitar wah in a loop, blended with other stuff for my low end.
20. ahh, it should work fine then, but I could test it tomorrow for you (if I remember).
21. Everyone seems to agree that passive and active are two opposing sounds. I don't have much trouble getting my active schecter to sound like my passive brice (both 6ers) although I do tend to use lots of effects. I guess i'd prefer to have the added flexibility of an active pre with a passive switch.
22.
His mum?
I would describe her as a plastic nectarine in her early 20s but she might be a bass player and I was sworn to secrecy.
23. Ahhh. It looked a bit overkill for just controlling a whammy!
24. So what does the Roland control other than the whammy?
25. Ahhh, when you said "resigned on stage" I thought it was half way through a song or something. Perhaps a girl in the front of the audience shouted "oooh the bass player is so sexy!" or the like, and he stopped the song half way through shouting "f*** you all!!" rather than "i'd like to announce tonight that i'll be leaving the band, we've had some great times.......
