1. Owned a 400+, nothing like the GT200. The GT200 is cleaner, especially the pre, more mids and less highs. The boogie sounds good clean, but I did not like the way it distorts. It also has a very hard feel, and seems to lack responsivenness when compared to the GT200. The GT200 is more pillowy and seems to have more sag than the 400+. To me the 400+ and Bassman 300 PRO are very solid state sounding tube amps.
  2. OK, so I know I am about a year late, but here are some much cleaner clips of the GT200 in action. Recorded through a Zoom Q3 so the audio quality is a lot better and there is no microphone clipping. tuned down to B http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eO0k-HQp8Rg&context=C385f53dADOEgsToPDskL70iUVrPP_HHksJVuj5poQ and half a step down. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6GWqraAD0I&context=C352cf9bADOEgsToPDskI0i6rZzV6XTPXDbINtqOsa amp was set fairly clean, the fur is from a standard germanium OxFuzz.

    decent DI box?

If you want the tone of your amp going to the PA then a speaker level DI is the only way to go. Bass > Amp> Speaker Out to JDI then the Thru from the JDI to your cab and the XLR out of the JDI to the PA. (remeber you still need to use speaker cables between the amp, DI and cab.) I used the JDI as an example but there are several DI boxes capable of receiveing a speaker level signal.
Just out of curiosity - what settings did you use on the amp in this recording?
I think it was something like this: Depth at 12 o'clock (this is a custom setting that i modded) Gain at 2 o'clock Bass at 12 o'clock Treble at 10 o'clock Presence at 11 o'clock Master just under 12 o'clock bass was a Lakland Skyline Bob Glaub with Labella 760FX flatwounds.
  5.
I thought you guys had no vocals? Nice vids - and the audio is pretty clear for being so close. What did you use to record those clips?
Ha ha, i did not know we had voclas either. Defenitly caught us by surprise. The vid/audio were captured through an old Sony digital camera. I don't know why, but the mic on that thing is pretty decent at capturing high SPL levels.
  6. We had our official record release show last night. here is some footage of the GT200 in action. 7.
You guys happy without a singer?
Yeah we enjoy it. It feels so liberating not having to worry about vocals and writing interesting lyrics.
  8. though I would share some more clips. Recorded through the camera mic so not the greatest but there are some spots that you can get a taste of the matamp tone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKZsa24gDWY
  9.
BTW - if an american is a yank, an englishman is a pom\limey, whats a canadian?
Canadians are also known as Canucks. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canuck
  10.
LOL. Good point. Awesome amps - but not quite the amp I'm looking for. I have played through an original OR120 before (with bass), and whilst it's the best stoner rock amp for guitar EVER!!!!, it's not quite what I'm after for bass. Awesome mid-range, but the bottom is just a little bit too fuzzy at the volumes I play at. I've been emailing the Aussie distributor of Matamp so far..... Q&A all that stuff. I am having a look at what else is out there Stoner rock is where I'm at. Kinda why I'm keen on the Orange/Ampeg/Matamp tones. The Reeves is a cool looking amp (emailed them a ways back) cos I do dig clean-ISH to OD tones (not amp-fuzz) I'll have to have a closer look. But; I thought this was an english site? ......are you telling me the british aren't as patriotic as the americans???? When I posted a questions about Matamp over on TB, I got PM's telling me that only a limey b*^@h would buy an amp like that, "just buy an ampeg man!" Didn't surprise me that much.....but I got a handful of PM's stating the same thing. I'm pretty much compelled NOT to buy an ampeg on that basis alone. Afterall, it's just an amp. It doesn't come with a national anthem when it's made in Vietnam! .......anyways. All of your Matamp owners out there.... What kind of cabs and tuning do you use?
I play the GT200 through a vintage Ampeg 8x10. I'm Canadian though so that's OK . Mostly tune half a step down sometimes i will drop the E string to C#, extra light gauge flats (Labella 760FX) on Lakland Bob Glaub or 4001 Ric. Sometimes I play a MIJ P-bass with DR SS Lo-Riders too.
  11.
Another query; Do all GT200's come with KT88's? I hear KT-88's are easier to bias, and are more stable over time than 6550's.... so I assume this is why Matamp uses them currently. Has anyone tried theirs with 6550's?
I have never heard of it. What self respecting British amp builder would use the all American tube?
  12.
Yep - It's all about the tube power section. Congrats. All these hybrid amps with their tube pre's are missing the point. I'd rather have a SS pre with a tube power section than the other way around.
Thank You! Hybrids are marketing hype and nothing else. It is all about the power section.
  13. thanks for all the compliments everyone. Yes we released an album in September, you can download it here http://monobrowmanband.bandcamp.com Also the album will be release on vinyl in the next 10 days or so. If anyone is interested let me know. cheers. p.s unfortunatly the album was recorded before I go the Matamp. I used a mixture of vintage Traynor and Sunn amps.
  14. As promised here are some GT200 clips from our last rehearsal. Nothing polished, recorded with and SM57 into a Tascam 4-track tape recorder. Used a Mojo Hand Cream Pie for some boost (always on) and an OxFuzz Bass for the distorted/fuzz sounds. Cab was a mid 70's Ampeg 810 and the bass was a 4001 Ric with flats. 15.
Wish I could. But I'm not heading to the UK any time soon. Yeah that's what I thought. So Quimbymeat - I saw your Matamp here - very nice looking amp! Did you get any custom options besides the faceplate? Have you had a chance to compare yours to other amps? And everyone - is there a resource anywhere with dedicated sound recordings of the Matamp, with or without a band? I've found a few, like the one from Monobrow, but not too many others I've found have the bass loud enough in the mix.
I just got my amp back from a little makeover and we got a pretty decent recording setup at our rehearsal space now. I should have some good quality clips of the GT200 this weekend...stay tuned.
  16. I use 5751s in all my amps except the GT200. The GT200 is low gain enough that the 12ax7 does not get all muddy and fizzy when you turn up the gain or push it with a pedal. However in any other 12ax7 amp I always swap in a 5751. I like the more clear tone, better mids and when pushed they add some grind wiouth the 12ax7 slopiness and harsh distortion. I have yet to find an amp where this swap did not yeild positive results. Even in the GT200 it sounded better but it just got too hard to get and OD out of the amp without overpowering the entire band
  17. Radial JDI is your friend. I have used it as a speaker level DI with many amps and it works really well. Just connect the speaker out of the amp to the JDI input, then the thru put from the JDI to your cab. XLR out from the JDI to the board. Easy and painless.
  18. Just picked this BG up, should have it in a few days. 2007 Skyline with Fralins.
  19. Love the white GT200, classy. This is my stock GT200, getting a custom faceplate, should be here in the next few weeks.

    MONOBROW

Hi everyone, fairly new member to this forum. I wanted to promote my band MONOBROW. We recenlty released our album and it is available for streaming and/or download at http://monobrowmanband.bandcamp.com and we hope to have vinyl available in another 6-8 weeks. would love to hear your thoughts. also if you like what you hear you may enjoy some of the material from our label mates. you can check some of that out at http://www.yogismeatlocker.com thanks
  21. Hi everyone, found this forum while doing some Matamp research, thought I would throw in my $0.02 I have a GT200 and i love it. It is fairly clean, especially the preamp. Most of the distortion is going to come from the power section when you turn it up, which is the way I like it. I have never owned the AD200 but I do own a 70's SVT, Mesa 400+ and a Traynor YBA-3, and I have also previously owned a YBA200 and Fender 300 Pro. The SVT is by far the loudest of the bunch, but the Matamp is no slouch. Lots of volume. Someone compared it to the Mesa and I would have to disagree. The Matamp has more subdued highs and more lower midrange grunt. You can quite easily get a Mesa tone out of it, but I find that the Mesa can't really do the Matamp tone. As far is Matamp's customer service, I have not dealt with them directly but I did deal with the North American distributor. I did have an issue with my GT200 when I first bought it. The amp would run for a few hours and then shut down. I took the amp to my tech and the distributor put him in touch with the Matmp factory. They were very helpful and found that a solder had come loose, probably during shipping, they paid for all the repairs and parts with no hassle at all. The amp runs perfectly now and it sounds great. Now I am waiting for a custom face plate from Matamp, and I will definetly go back to get either an 8x10, 2 4x10s or a 2x15. edit: I should mention that I did slightly modify the GT200 preamp. I changed the capacitor values on the depth knob. I found that with the depth knob all the way to the right there was no where near enough bass and I could not think of any situation where I would use that setting. I moved the capacitor form the middle setting to the right and I added a new value in the middle with slightly less bass than the bassiest setting. Also, as with all my amps, I replaced the V1 preamp tube with a 5751 which has a little less gain and smoother overdrive than the ECC83/12AX7.
