3. When I worked in London, in a Engineering Co (Lucas Aerospace) they had a massive ultra sonic cleaning tank and I used to bung my strings in there with a torpedo casing( I kid you not) and they came out as new. I haven't tried it on strings yet but I think Milton (baby stuff) is great for cleaning metal watch straps etc, so I don't see why it wouldn't do strings. NB- Milton is not good for silver, pure or plated.
4. Found this one recently. Seems good. Lots of info for the old gear. Its confirming what I suspected with my P. Not 76, but a very early 75. S/N # Info near the end. http://home.provide.net/~cfh/fender.html
5. So the itch has been scratched. I bought the V940 FL. TBH, the price was to good to refuse. Its not a bad bass and for the price, it will do the job just fine. It was like it was just out of the box. Advertised as unwanted gift. A few hours played on it (max) The neck is a little wider that my precision but not as thick. Build quality is average. I should have bought a fretless years ago. It opens up a whole new world of sounds/techniques. Naturally, I would have preferred to up the budget and get something else but this is a fine starter fretless.
6. I'm in a heap with this now. GAS is a terrible affliction ! Sorry for the Emma ref... V940FL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4pa41LVb40 And to make up for that.... Edie.... 7. Jebus. I'm all over the shop on this one. I'm now going to look at a Vintage V940FL tomorrow. http://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/...7c21170423a55a8 Seeing that the make seems 'relatively' well spoken of on here, I thought I'd have a scope. Bass looks great and is active. Doesn't have the nice thin neck though. In fact, it looks even wider then my P. I wonder do they use the same neck for their 5 string I can't find the neck dims anywhere online. Anyhoo. its well priced so I might live with it. We'll see. As usual the BC'ers here came up trumps with help as usual. Thanks again folks. B.
8.
I've got a mint Squier VMJ fretless sitting in my mum's house in Dublin. Never gigged. I kept it there as a backup, but I've never needed it. If you're interested, drop me a pm. I'll be down within a couple of weeks.
Hmmm, that may be an option. A couple of weeks tho PM'd
I have a 70's unlined fretless precision copy by Maya for sale in the for sale section if you fancy a look at that
Thanks mate but I have a fretted P and was looking for some sort of a change. GLWS I'll be back with a more detailed reply later. Thanks to all so far
9. I've got an itch for a fretless that needs scratching. I had a cheapo for a little while many years ago, but had to bring it back to the shop cos the wiring was crap (feedback etc) Now, there are a couple of things I'm thinking about. I fear that I may get board with it, so I'm not going to spend big money. I also don't want to buy a ball of s*ite as that will defeat the purpose and it will defo get left in a corner. Any thoughts on this ? http://www.thomann.de/ie/fender_sq_vintage...ied_jazz_fl.htm Pros- Price/Colour seems ok, Warranty, free delivery(or at least included) If I get board, it may sell relatively easily. Cons- I've not played it and I would prefer if there were no fret lines (but I do like the little jazz neck) Looking forward to a bit of help/recommendations on this folks. If anyone has a fretless 4 for sale, feel free to throw it into the mix. Cheers.
10. Yep, it seems everyone is playing off the same sheet with this one. Thanks for the inputs and the great comments re my bass
11. Evening all. When I was thinking of selling my 75/76 P, I put up a Q here and got some good reply's(Ta again) http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=112194&hl= I then contacted a guitar maker/repair guy and the e mails were as follows... NB.. They are in reverse order so scroll down to the 1st one 4th and last mail [i]Hi Brian No problem. Regarding sale price and repairs, it's a tricky one. The vintage market frequently frowns on 'touched-up' finishes and there are many that want an all-original finish even if that means substantial finish damage. I generally caution people to think carefully about finish work on older instruments as, even it expertly performed, it can often have a negative impact on the instrument's value. I realise this is an odd situation but that's the way the market goes. That said, in some cases it depends on who you're selling to. There are those who prefer a clean, intact instrument. I'd say, on balance, the former tend to be the most prevalent though. Your plan of attempting to sell and gauging reaction is probably a good one. You may be able to shed some light on that ???? If I do require the repair I'll be in touch. Regards, Brian. I hope I can help out. Apologies firstly, for the delay getting back to you. I hope it hasn't caused you any problems. Regarding the repair, as an estimate, you can budget around €120 for the repair. It's a little difficult to say with any certainty without seeing the bass first-hand but I'd be reasonably confident in that figure. One thing to consider however is that, with this clear finish, a completely invisible repair will likely not be possible - Fender had (partially at least) made the switch to poly finishes by '76, which makes blending and 'burn-in' of new finishes problematic, and there body wood itself seems to have been exposed which could well have caused discolouration. That said, the repair should be discrete and withstand scrutiny - basically, you won't see it unless you're looking for it. I'd be happy to examine the bass and have a chat if you like. I'm based in Lucan, Dublin. You can find a map with instructions on how to find me here (http://www.hazeguitars.com/find-us/). My workshop is based at my home so there is usually a good deal of flexibility about dropping off instruments on weekends or evenings. Do drop me a line or give me a call to arrange an appointment first though. Personally the damage doesn't bother me one bit and the bass plays beautifully and sounds great. I am inclined to leave it as it is. If you were buying this bass would it worry you or would you use just use it as a bargaining tool ? (bit of a rhetorical Q I suppose) BTW, I won't be selling it. I just can't. Simples ! I just thought this topic may be of interest.
12. Glad the question was asked. For me it was a natural and purely instinctive decision. I was in a restaurant with a mate on a Sat pm and there was some really great 70's funk music playing in the background. That was the moment I decided I was going to play bass. We left the restaurant and an hour later, I had bought my first bass. I firmly believe there are plenty of traits that bassists share. I would class myself as being a bit introverted and a quiet sort of a lad. I am perfectly willing to let my playing do the talking (if ya get my drift) I deffo don't need to leap about the stage trying to get attention. I personally think it is the coolest instrument and when in the hands of a natural like JE, NW-R,G.Maby, its a pleasure to watch. Got my fair share of post gig action too so must have been doing something right .
13.
damnit! And theres no decent music stores near me! Does anyone want to sell me one please?
Seriously lad, try somewhere like this. Think outside the box. Bring a screw into them and if they don't have one, they can at least ID the thread size and advise you. http://www.modelmakingsupplies.co.uk/allen-screws-2-2.htm There are a few places like this in your area.
14. If it is a grub screw (allen socket set screw, would be the tech term) a decent engineering/fastener supplier should have one for a few pence. The Fender would be an imperial thread and the Yam would be a metric thread.
15. Their C/Service hasn't changed so. Sent me new strings 25 years ago with no quibs at all. Great Co.
16.
Sounds like you've got an unregulated 9VDC supply. Unregulated -> the output voltage varies with load. Measuring with a meter means almost no load, and a higher voltage; if you plug it into the pedal the load could be such that the resultant voltage ends up around 9V. Unregulated supplies can often cause a lot of hum in your output signal, and are best avoided. But you could probably fit a 9V regulator + a couple of caps to what you have and end up with a regulated power supply that's as good as many store-bought units.
Thanks OzMike. Think I'll go the new route. Life's too short
17.
Get a new power supply, it's not worth the risk. As well as pouring too much voltage in, the polarity could be wrong, pedal supplies tend to use reverse positive / negative setup to most other devices. I recommend this one, it'll have enough juice to power a whole board full of pedals via a daisy chain if you decide to get more later: http://www.johnnyshredfreak.com/store/inde...;products_id=12
Good link that, I'll have to get a few more bits to spread the postage costs. Cheers
18.
I don't have my supplies etc here at home but I'm pretty sure most 9v pedals can take up to 12v (although not all sound like they like it). I'm sure there was a thread some time ago where someone pushed a Boss ODB-3 over 12v and basically destroyed it... Shep
Yeah, thats my concern. I think I'll try fitting a resistor or something in line to get the v down a bit. Cheers. EDIT. That resistor thing was a disaster so I'd still like to hear from anyone
19. Evenin all. I have a BD 21 Bass driver and as normal its a 9v DC. Its very heavy on batteries so I had a scope in my bits box and found a 9v power supply (9v printed on the unit). Its from a pair of puter speakers.'Result' I thought. I checked the secondary voltage with a meter and it reads 13.3v DC Q. Will this damage my pedal. I figure there is a +/- tolerance, but 50% ? If someone could check their volts on the output of a PS I'd appreciate it. Thanks, B (dunno if this should have gone in tech section)
20. First bass - Crappy p copy (make ???) Go to bass - US fender p My Bass - US fender p Very tempted to lie my face off there !
21. I spose the whole S/N thing is a bit of a grey area. If a unit was put together week 1 in Jan it will made of parts mfg'd the previous year but when it leaves the plant in week 2 its S/N will be of that year(the year its shipped) It also depends on how many parts Fender bought/made at any one time. I really think a seller should go by the S/N and what year that relates to. I posed this question to a lad on ebay a few months back. He was selling 2 x 75's. Both S/N's were 76 and I asked him about this. Didn't bother his arse replying but changed his ad's the next day. (I hope he's not on here) I'd would like to know the diff between the pickguard's years as I gen don't know. Mine is 3 laminate Blk,white,Blk.
22. I don't think its a 75 though with a 619... S/Nr. I have mine down as 1976 and its S/Nr is 599... I've seen this a few times on ebay. Ppl claiming 75 a lot when they're later. Ask them to confirm the date on the Fender site. Apart from that, its a good lookin bass.

24. Hey. Just putting my bit in here. One of my favorite basslines in Sade's songs would be Cherry Pie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Py3qW5HAg8U There are live versions on UT but b/line is best in orig. NB. Scroll down a bit and check out the dude playing it on his todd.
25. looks like a fair attempt at this (mine) http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=112194 B
